Acne, one of the most common skin disease, is a chronic inflammatory disease and is caused by uncertain and multiple factors. Propionibacterium acnes belongs to the human cutaneous normal flora and is a major etiologic agent of acne vulgaris. In this study, we evaluated the antibacterial effect of 19 medicinal plants. Antibacterial activity of extracts prepared from the 19 medicinal plants was investigated against bacteria related to acnes, Propionibacterium acnes. Among them, some medicinal plants inhibited the growth of the P. acnes. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of Polygonum aviculare (Herb) was 0.2 mg/ml against P. acnes. MIC of Dianthus chinensis (Aerial Part), Forsythia viridissima (Fruit), Lygodium japonicum (Spore) and Sophora flavescens (Root) were 0.4 mg/ml. Based on these results, Polygonum aviculare (Herb), Dianthus chinensis (Aerial Part), Forsythia viridissima (Fruit), Lygodium japonicum (Spore) and Sophora flavescens (Root) may be considered as a candidate for a good medicine for acne.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the anti-helicobacter activity and anti-inflammatory activity of Angelica dahurica (AD). The minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC) of AD against Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori), expression of the H. pylori cagA gene in the presence of AD was determined. Inhibition of H. pylori urease by AD, inhibition of nitric oxide (NO) production in AGS cells was measured. IL-8 mRNA expression in AGS cells which were infected with H. pylori and IL-8 level was measured. The MIC of MeOH Ex. of AD was $250{\mu}g/mL$ and the expression of cagA gene was decreased about 88% in the presence of AD. The activity of H. pylori urease was inhibited 70% by AD. mRNA expression of IL-8 and the production of NO and IL-8 were significantly decreased in the presence of AD. In conclusion, AD showed anti-Helicobacter activity and has potent anti-inflammatory effect on H. pylori-induced inflammation in human gastric epithelial AGS cells.
A total of 16 Staphylococcus epidermidis isolates collected from 14 dogs admitted to the Veterinary Medicial Teaching Hospital in Seoul National University over eleven months were examined for in vitro antibiotic susceptibility pattern with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and slime production, a virulence-associated phenotype, and were genetically characterized by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). The frequency of resistance to antimicrobial agents tested was not high, with a susceptibility ranging from 56.3% to 100%. Three strains exhibited multiple drug resistance against amikacin (MIC, $32-64{\mu}g/ml$), ampicillin ($32{\mu}g/ml$), fosfomycin ($32-128{\mu}g/ml$) and gentamicin ($16{\mu}g/ml$). Vancomycin, ciprofloxacin and rifampin were effective antibiotics against the isolates. All isolates were slime producers ; strains isolated from dogs which died of bacteremia were more likely to produce slime than those isolated from dogs which survived. Chromosomal DNA fingerprinting of the isolates yielded 16 different genomic types with few common bands, indicating a variety of clones of S epidermidis were prevalent in the hospital. This study revealed that PFGE is an useful method for the genotype characterization of S epidermidis strains and this organism could probably be pathogenic in some dogs with severe disorders. Further works on a larger number of epidemiologically defined strains are required to assess these results.
For development of functional food, antibacterial effect of Poncirus trifoliata juice was examined. Strong antibacterial activities of Poncirus trifoliata juice were observed aginst Gram positive and negative pathogenic bacteria such as Baillus cereus, Bacillus subtilis, Corynebacterium zerosis, Listeria monocytogenes, Micrococcus luteus, Rhodococcus equi, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Vibrio alginolyticus, Vibrio cholerae, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Vibrio vnlnificus and Yersinia enterocolitica. The minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC) of Poncirus trifoliata juice against Bacillus cereus. Listeria monocytogenes, Micrococcus luteus, Rhodococcus equi, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Citrobacter freundil and Pseudomonas aeruginosa was 2.5% and the MIC against Vibrio cholerae, Vibrio parahemolyticus, Vibrio vulnificus and Yersinia enterocolitica was 1.25%. Also, antibacterial activities of Poncirus trifoliata juice treated for 15 min at 121$^{\circ}C$ were confirmed to be stable.
A number of essential oils from Mongolian aromatic plants are claimed to have antimicrobial activities. The essential oil of Dracocephalum foetidum, a popular essential oil used in Mongolian traditional medicine, was examined for its antimicrobial activity. Eight human pathogenic microorganisms including B. subtilis, S. aureus, M. lutens, E. hirae, S. mutans, E. coli, C. albicans, and S. cerevisiae were examined. The essential oil of Dracocephalum foetidum exhibited strong antimicrobial activity against most of the pathogenic bacteria and yeast strains that were tested; by both the agar diffusion method and the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) assay ($MIC\;range\;was\;26-2592{\mu}g/ml$). Interestingly, Dracocephalum foetidum even showed antimicrobial activity against methicilin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains. We also analyzed the chemical composition of the oil by GC-MS and identified several major components, including n-Mentha-1,8-dien-10-al, limonene, geranial, and neral.
In this study, we synthesized the aminoclay (AC) with magnesium ions and 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APTES). At the same time, propolis intercalated aminoclay (PIAC) and coptis extract intercalated aminoclay (CIAC) were synthesized by intercalating natural chemicals between clay sheets. Clay synthesis and natural chemical intercalation were confirmed through SEM, particle size analyze, FT-IR, TGA and XRD. In particular, the characterization of intercalation of natural chemicals was determined by analyzing the interlayer distance from XRD data. The antimicrobial property of PIAC and CIAC was checked by minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) test and increased compared with that of the pristine aminoclay (AC).

Previously, strains of Streptococci genera were isolated from osteomyelitis caused by the post-infection after extraction. In present study, to test the sensitivity of the Streptococci strains against seven antibiotics, penicillin G, amoxicillin, tetracycline, ciprofloxacin, cefuroxime, erythromycin, clindamycin, and vancomycin, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was performed using broth dilution assay. Our data showed that the value of MIC of the Streptococci against antibiotics were different among the strains. In addition, the degree of resistance to antibiotics of Streptococci strains was mainly depended on the origin of isolation. Our results suggest that the development of the rapid and accurate method to detect the antibiotics-resistant bacteria is need to prevent the misuse or abuse of antibiotics and outbreak of antibiotics-resistant bacteria.
Objectives : Sophorae Radix (SR), the dried root of Sophorae Flavescens Aiton, has been used to treat atherosclerosis, arrhythma and skin diseases including scabies and eczema. The present study was examined to evaluate antimicrobial activities of SR extracts against oral microorganism. Methods : Antimicrobial properties of SR extracts were determined by agar diffusion method and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) against Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sobrinus and Actinomyces viscosus. Analysis of kurarinone from SR extracts was conducted using UPLC (Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography). Results : The ethanolic extracts of SR showed stronger antimicrobial effect than methanolic extracts, while the aqueous extracts of SR had no activity. In addition, the higher content of kurarinone was found in ethanolic extracts than methanolic extracts. The purified kurarinone from ethanolic extracts showed potent antimicrobial activity with the MIC value of $3.9{\sim}7.8{\mu}g/m{\ell}$. Conclusion : An ethanolic extract of SR showed antimicrobial properties against several oral microorganisms, and kuranrinone contributed to antimicrobial action of SR. Thus, ethanolic extracts of SR or purified kurarinone should be beneficial for the preparation of the useful agent for treating oral disease including anticaries.
A series of 6-(N-arylamino)-7-methylthio-5,8-quinolinedione derivatives 4a-4l was newly synthesized for the evaluation of antifungal activity. 6-(N-Arylamino)-7-methylthio-5,8-quinolinediones were prepared by regioselective nucleophilic substitution of 6,7-dichloro-5,8-quinolinediones with arylamines in the presence of $Ce^{3+}$, and $Na_2$S/dimethylsulfate. The MIC values of 4a-4l were determined for antifungal susceptibility in vitro against Candida species by agar streak method. The derivatives 4a-4l had generally potent antifungal activities against all human pathogenic fungi. Especially they had the most potent activity against C. krusei at 12.5-0.8 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml. Compounds 4d, 4g, 4h, 4j and 4k had more potent antifungal activities than fluconazole. Compounds 4g and 4h completely inhibited the fungal growth at 0.8-6.3 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml against all Candida species, while fluconazole inhibited the growth at 25 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml. The compounds such as 4g and 4h containing an N-(4-bromo-2-methylphenyl)- or N-(4-bromo-3methylphenyl)amino substituent exhibited the most potent antifungal activities.
To screen for an anti-yeast substance (AYS), many bacteria were isolated from soil and a strain AY2000 was selected. The strain AY2000 was identified as Rahnella aquatilis by morphology, biochemical properties, and 16S r-RNA nucleotide sequence analyses. The strain AY2000 showed anti-yeast activity against Candida albicans and Saccharomyces cerevisiae, whereas R. aquatilis ATCC33071 as a type strain did not show the activity against the yeasts under the same condition. The growth of yeast cell was significantly inhibited by AYS produced by the strain AY2000, as shown by optical density and MTT assay. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the AYS against S. cerevisiae and C. albicans at $28^{\circ}C\;was\;20{\mu}g/ml\;and\;60{\mu}g/ml$, respectively. The MIC of AYS against hyphae of C. albicans at $37^{\circ}C\;was\;600{\mu}g/ml$. Scanning electron microscopic analysis revealed that yeast cells treated with AYS had an irregular form with a wrinkled and rough surface.
