If sewage flows for an extended time at low velocities, solids may be deposited in the sewer. Sufficient velocity or tractive force should be developed regularly to flush out any solids that may have been deposited during low flow periods. This study aims to evaluate the periods (T) during which sewage flow greater than the minimum tractive force maintains on a spot in sewer pipe system with lower tractive force or lower velocity than expected in the design step, when a storage tank installed in a place upsteam pours water into the sewer. The effect to T of design factors of storage tank and sewer pipes was evaluated assuming the uniform flow in sewers. When the area of orifice in the storage tank is $0.062m^2$(or 0.28 m diameter), the maximum T of 31sec was maintained using the usually used preset range of values of several design factors. As the horizontal cross section of storage tank and water depth of storage tank and roughness in sewers increase, T linearly increases. Also, T linearly decreases as the diameter of a sewer pipe increases. Although T gradually decreases as the sewer pipe slope decreases to around 0.005, T decreases sharply when the slope is less than 0.003.
An electromagnetic flowmeter, based on a magnetic induction principle; provides an obstructionless flowmeter that essentially averages the velocity distribution over the pipe cross-sectional area. To predict the installation effects, the flowmeter installed near $90^{\circ}$ elbow is simulated by using a commercial code FLUENT(ver. 4.48) for the laminar flow field and a code developed through this study for magnetic field. The installation effects of the flowmeter are estimated by varying a number of the dependent parameters such as the radius of the elbow(Rc=1D, 1.5D, 2D, 3D), the location, Reynolds number and the direction of electrodes plane(${\varphi}$). It was found that all these factors affect the performance of the electromagnetic flowmeter significantly. The longer installation distance from the elbow is not always optimal to minimize the error, and also there exists an optimal location to install the EMF for a minimum error. Especially the flow signal with the electrodes plane direction of ${\varphi}=45^{\circ}$ is shown to yield smallest measurement error regardless of the Reynolds number and the curvature of elbow.
The airflow characteristics of an air-conditioning duct with multiple diffusers were investigated through one-dimensional analysis, CFD simulation and experimental measurement. One-dimensional program based on Bernoulli's equation and minor loss equations was developed in order to evaluate the air distribution rate at each diffuser. In CFD simulation, three-dimensional flow characteristics inside air-conditioning duct were computed for incompressible viscous flow, adopting the RNG k-$\xi$turbulence model. Also, in an effort to equalize the discharge flow rate at each outlet, the optimization procedure has been performed to obtain the optimum diffuser area. In this process, square of difference between maximum discharge rate and minimum discharge rate is used as an object function. Diffuser area and discharge velocity are established as constraints. After optimization process, determined design variables are applied again in CFD simulation and experiment to validate the optimized result by one-dimensional program. Comparison with the experimental data of airflow rate distribution showed that the developed program seems to be acceptable and can be useful design tool for an automotive air-conditioning duct in an initial design stage.
The effects of wind fence on the pressure characteristics around low-rise building model were investigated experimentally. Flow characteristics of turbulences behind wind fence were measured using hot-wire anemometer. The wind fence characterize by varying the porosity of 0 %, 40 % and the distances from the wind fence from 1 H to 6 H with maintaining the uniform flow velocity of 6 m/s. We investigated the overall characterization of the low-rise building by measuring pressure seventy four on model. The effects of porosity fences varied with the porosity of the fence and measurement locations(1H-6H). The 0% porosity proved to be effective for the protection area of 4H to 6H, but the 40% porosity proved to be effective for the protection area of 1H to 6H. The low-rise building of front face was found to be best wind fence for decreasing the mean, maximum and minimum pressure fluctuation.
The objective of this study is to get simulation data about pulsatile flow of a non-Newtonian fluid through a bifurcated tube. All the process was based on CFD method, with a commercial FVM code, SC/Tetra ver. 6.0 for solving, and with CATIA R16 for generating geometries. To define a non-Newtonian fluid, the following viscous models are used; the Powell-Eyring model, the modified Powell-Eyring model, the Cross model, the modified Cross model, the Carreau model, the Carreau-Yasuda model and the modified Power Law model. The flow calculation data using each model were compared with the other data of a existing paper. Finally, the Carreau model was recognized to give the best result with the SC/Tetra code, and the succeeding simulations are made with the model. For the pulsating flow condition, the sine wave type velocity profile is given as the inlet boundary condition. To investigate the effect of geometries and mesh, the pre-test is carried out with various curvature conditions of the bifurcated corner, and then with various mesh conditions. The final process is to calculate flow variables such as the wall shear stress (WSS) and the wall shear stress gradient (WSSG). To validate all the result, the simulation is compared with the existing data of the other papers. Generally speaking, there is a noticeable difference in the maximum and minimum value of WSS. It is not sure that the values in each data are on the exactly same location. However, the overall trend is similar. The next study needs to investigate the same situation by experimental method. Furthermore, if the flow is simulated with more pulsatile conditions, more data of flow field through a bifurcated tube could be achieved.
