  • In the paper, we analyze the performances of random access channels in multi-service multi-user OFDMA systems. The resource of the random access channels in OFDMA systems is the nubmer of available sub-channels and PN-codes. For given available sub-channels and PN-codes. we analyze the performances of the random access channels of OFDMA systems according to three resource allocation methods (resource full sharing, resource partial sharing, resource partition) in tenus of the access success probability, the blocking probability, the access delay and the throughput of each service class. Further, we find the feasible region of the access probability of each service class in which the allowable minimum access success probability, the allowable maximum blocking probability and the allowable maximum access delay are satisfied. The results also can be utilized to find proper region of the access probabilities of each service class for differentiated quality of service(QoS)s, and for the system operations.

  • Fourth-generation (4G) cellular communication systems must provide different quality-of-service (QoS) to users according to the service type, membership class, and usage case of each user. For the purpose of user's QoS differentiation, we propose an enhanced uplink random access scheme for bandwidth request. More specifically, we divide a bandwidth request channel into two parts: One is a primary region and the other is a secondary region. Then, each region has a unique minimum access class that allows only specific users to perform random access through that region. By doing so, we can reduce collision probability and increase the success probability of bandwidth request. From the perspective of standardization, we presented this scheme in the IEEE 802.16m Session #66 held on March 2010. As a result, the concept of the proposed scheme and required messages were defined in the 802.16m standard.

  • A number of MPLS ATM systems have been proposed to increase the access speed of current routers, which only support the best-effort service. However, the MPLS ATM systems have to support the so-called differential service, which discriminates the applications according to the service class because they do not be satisfied the Internet users who use diverse applications. In this paper, to support this differential service a detailed forwarding procedure based on a LSP control method and an application-based marking algorithm is suggested. The LSP control method establishes several different LSPs for each FEC according to the service class and the application-based marking algorithm chooses a proper differential service depending on the application category. Also, a design scheme of forwarding engine, which can be easily implemented with a minimum modification of existing MPLS ATM systems is proposed. And, the best simulation result of high priority application category is gained when the proposed forwarding algorithm is comparedwithexistingalgorithms.

  • The study aims at offering a solution to the problems of transmission delay and data throughput decrease as the number of contending On-Board Units (OBU) increases by applying CSMA medium access control protocol based upon IEEE 802.11p. In a competition-based medium, contention probability becomes high as OBU increases. In order to improve the performance of this medium access layer, the author proposes EDCA which a adaptive adjustment of the Contention Windows (CW) considering traffic density and data type. EDCA applies fixed values of Minimum Contention Window (CWmin) and Maximum Contention Window (CWmax) for each of four kinds of Access Categories (AC) for channel-specific service differentiation. EDCA does not guarantee the channel-specific features and network state whereas it guarantees inter-AC differentiation by classifying into traffic features. Thus it is not possible to actively respond to a contention caused by network congestion occurring in a short moment in channel. As a solution, CWminAS(CWmin Adaptation Scheme) and ACATICT(Adaptive Contention window Adjustment Technique based on Individual Class Traffic) are proposed as active CW control techniques. In previous researches, the contention probabilities for each value of AC were not examined or a single channel based AC value was considered. And the channel-specific demands of IEEE 802.11p and the corresponding contention probabilities were not reflected in the studies. The study considers the collision number of a previous service section and the current network congestion proposes a dynamic control technique ACCW(Adaptive Control of Contention windows in considering the WAVE situation) for CW of the next channel.

  • IEEE 802.16/WiBro, one of the representative Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) systems, defines QoS negotiation between BS and SS and five service classes to guarantee QoS for flows. The five service classes are UGS, ertPS, rtPS, nrtPS, and BE, but the standard does not define how to provide services to flows according to the service classes. Existing research works have been studied about the scheduler architecture to effectively utilize the IEEE 802.16/WiBro systems. These works use the original packet scheduling algorithm for service classes. However, it is necessary to consider bandwidth allocation mechanisms in scheduling algorithms since bandwidth allocation mechanisms are different according to service classes. Especially, bandwidth allocation mechanisms should be considered for the scheduling of rtPS class since rtPS class uses the polling mechanism that takes time to allocate bandwidth and has the minimum latency constraint. Therefore, we propose two stage dropping scheme for rtPS class that is sensitive to latency, and thus it reduces the wasted resources and provides efficient service to rtPS class.

  • In this paper, DSPA(Dynamic Signalling Period Allocation) algorithm that has been proposed by the authors for MAC(Medium Access Control) protocols in W-ATM(Wireless Asynchronous Transfer Mode) is applied to mixed traffic conditions composed of various service classes. We investigate the bandwidth utilization efficiency and quality of service(QoS) fulfillment by the DSPA algorithm used in W-ATM MAC protocols. Simulation results indicate that the DSPA algorithm significantly increases the throughput of the system with the minimum control overhead. Moreover, QoS of each service class is well satisfied by proper and fair channel allocation to different service classes according to their requirements.

  • In this paper, we propose a new MAC(Medium Access Control) protocol using Movable-boundary, which tries to guarantee Qos for multimedia traffic in the slotted CDMA system. In this scheme, the traffic scheduler assigns channel resource according to the packet priority per service class and adapts the Movable-boundary concept in which the minimum resource is assigned to each traffic class; the remaining resource if it is available can be assigned dynamically according to the temporal demand of other traffic classes. For performance analysis, we performed computer simulations to obtain throughput and packet loss rate and compared the results with Fixed-boundary system. We observed that the error rate of voice traffic could be maintained below a prescribed value while bursty traffic such as video source shares the same channel. In comparison with Fixed-boundary scheme, our protocol exhibits better throughput and packet loss rate performance.

  • This paper proposes a scheduling algorithm for efficiently processing multimedia pakcet services in OFDMA physical system of the future broadband wireless access networks. The scheduling algorithm uses wireless channel state estimation, and allocates transmission rates after deciding transmission ordering based on class and priority policy. As the result, the proposed scheduling algorithm offers maximum throughput and minimum jitter for realtime services, and fairness for non-realtime services. In simulation study, the proposed algorithm proves superior performances than traditional round robin method.

  • Advances in the wireless Internet have led to the rise of diverse techniques which can access information regardless of time and place. There are many research efforts to identify the various ways to use a cellular phone in our everyday life. However, it has been rarely used in the elementary school. As an attempt to apply the wireless Internet technology to the elementary school, this study is to design and implement a wireless Internet homepage where the parents would be able to have an easy access to the information any place and any time. The characteristics of the wireless Internet homepage are as follows; first, the images were reduced to the minimum and the text-oriented information is mostly used to deliver the key information, considering the small screen and relatively slow transmission rates. Second, by providing a link set up between the wireless homepage and the wired Internet homepage, users can choose the more convenient access tool. Finally, the SMS (Short Message Service) messages could be used for an immediate delivery of information.
