  • A method is proposed to estimate groundwater usage for water curtain cultivation (WCC) using a rating curve, and it is applied to field measurements of groundwater discharge used for WCC in Wangjeon-ri, Nonsan. During the winter season, the hydraulic components of irrigation ditches in the study area consist mainly of direct run-off and groundwater discharged from nearby pumping wells. Changes in stage of the ditches were monitored, and a baseflow separation method was applied to remove increments in stage due to direct run-off. The resulting records of stage were translated to groundwater discharge by applying the-stage-discharge relation. The estimated average groundwater discharge for the WCC in Wangjeon-ri was 10,900 m3/d or 420 m3/d/ha when the estimation is normalized by the total area for WCC facilities of this region. Applying this estimation (420 m3/d/ha) to the entire area of the WCC in Korea (10,746 ha),and considering the number of pumping days for the WCC (120 days/year), the total ground water usage for the WCC nation-wide is estimated to be 0.54 billion m3. This is equivalent to 32% of the total groundwater discharge for agricultural use in Korea (1.7 billon m3).

  • Fiber optic distributed temperature sensing and thermal line sensor are applied in an observation borehole and a loom deep borehole heat exchanger. For the case of permanently installed system fiber optic DTS is very useful. By comparing with TLS, fiber optic DTS shows good accuracy and reliability. Ground water flow can give influences at heat exchange rate of the heat pump system. According to the hydraulic characteristics and temperature-depth profile, we consider that temperature-depth profile do not seem to be dependent on ground water flow. A permanent installation of fiber optic cable is expected as a reliable temperature measurement technique in a borehole heat exchanger system.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the use habit of drinking water. The survey data were collected from 1,282 of students and 175 of officers from September 1990 to June 1991 in Pusan city and the South of Kyung sang-do. The use rate of tap water among respondents was 33.5%, and the reasons that the others avoid using tap water were having the risk of heavy metals contamination and unsanitary. The 80% of respondents have drunk spring water or bottled water within two or three years. The keeping method of them were 53% in the refrigerator, and 33% in the indoor. The use rate of water vessels what were equipped in mineral springs was 85%. It's advisable that the picking of mineral water be cautious within two or three days after rain. The holding rate of water purifier in respondents was about 20%, and it was purchased within one or two years and the reliance degree of that in users was below 50%.

  • Production of high strength concrete requires a low water-cement ratio and this leads to the high cement content. Mineral admixture like fly ash(FA) is often cheaper than ordinary portland cement(OPC) and this factor in combination with possible improvement in workability and moderation of the heat evolution of the cement-rich mixes tends to encourage its use. The other mineral admixture that its use has been widly advocated is silica fume that increases compressive strength due to its pozzolanic reaction. The objective of this study is to assess the contribution of mineral admixtures(FA, SF) to the workability and the strength of concrete with low water-binder ratios. In this experimental study that investigates and analyzes the properties of fresh concrete, it is presented that using admixtures like flysh and silica fume as binding material increases properties of high strength flowing concrete having very low water cementitious ratios of 0.25 and 0.30.

  • Superabsorbent hydrogel (SAH) is a lightly crosslinked hydrophilic functional polymer material comprising a flexible chain structure, which can absorb and retain high amounts of water or aqueous fluids even under high pressure. Therefore, it is important to improve their characteristics such as absorption performance, residual monomer content, and water permeability. SAH nanocomposites were prepared using clay mineral as an inorganic filler and the influence of post-treatment processes such as quenching and aging process on their properties was studied. In addition, surface-crosslinking process was applied to improve the absorption performance associated with mechanical properties and water permeability. The structure of the SAH was characterized using attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, and scanning electron microscopy.

  • This study was done to evaluate the effect of dietary calcium level (a diet which met 100% or twice the calcium level in AIN-76 diet) on preventing bone loss in ovariectomized rats. Forty Sprauge-Dawley female rats(body weight 200$\pm$5g)were divided into two groups. One group were ovariecotomized (Ovx) while the others received sham operation(Sham). Thereafter, each rat group was further divided into normal calcium diet(0.52%) and high calcium diet(1.04%) subgroups. All rats were fed on experimental diet and deionized water ad libitum for 8 weeks. The total body, spine and femur bone mineral densities and bone mineral contents were measured by Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry, Eight weeks following operation, ovariectomized rats fed a high calcium diet had a significantly higher total bone mineral content, total bone calcium content, spine bone mineral density, spine bone mineral content and femur bone mineral content than ovariectomized rats fed control calcium diet. The correlation between dietary calcium intake level and spine bone mineral density were positive, but there was no correlation between dietary calcium intake and femur bone mineral density. The findings from the present study demonstrated that bone loss due to ovarian hormonal deficiency can be partially prevented by a high calcium diet. Futhermore, these findings support the strategy of the use of a high calcium diet in the prevention of estrogen depleted bone loss(postmenopausal osteoporosis)

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the distribution of mineral components, health and taste index for water supply plants, spring water located in northern Gyeonggi area and bottled waters in market to analyze Ca, K, Mg Na, Si, $F^-$ and $SO_4{^{2-}}$. Method: The samples were source and tap water in 15 water supply plants over 9 river basin, 172 spring water and 20 bottled water. The Ca, K, Mg Na and Si were analyzed by ICP-OES. The $F^-$ and $SO_4{^{2-}}$ were determined by Ion Chromatograph. Then, taste and health index were calculated using Hashimoto equation. Results: The average concentration of major minerals showed in same order of Ca > Na > Mg > K for all kinds of drinking water from water supply plants, spring waters and bottled waters. Total concentration of major minerals (Ca, K, Mg, Na) was calculated that showed 26.79 mg/L of tap water, 21.81 mg/L of spring water, 32.94 mg/L of bottled water on average. So, the spring waters indicated the lowest minerals sum. The tap water from water supply plants was categorized to Group I, II for 33.3, 44.4% according to K-index and O-index. Otherwise, spring water was classified as Group I, II for 44.0, 46.3%. Conclusion: According to the results of K and O-index, water from water supply plant showed higher K-index which means good for the health. Otherwise, spring water indicated higher O-index that people can feel more delicious than tap water. Futhermore, the mineral distribution of source water from water supply plants and spring water had indicated high correlation with geological effect.
