The porous ceramic beads using mine tailing were prepared and applied to catalytic converter for NOx/SOx removal. Catalytic support was used synthesized mesoporous silica (SBA-15) which coated on surface. Internal structure for porous ceramic beads was composed of three-dimensional network structure and porosity was about 80%. In addition, the specific surface area for mesoporous silica(SBA-15) coated on converter was significantly increased 55 $m^2/g$ compared with 0.8 $m^2/g$ before coating. NOx/SOx removal experiment was performed using $V_2O_5$ and $V_2O_5$/CuO converter. NOx conversion ratio for $V_2O_5$/CuO converter was approximately increased 10% compared to $V_2O_5$ converter. In addition, catalytic converter of $V_2O_5$/CuO was shown to remove 95% of NOx and 90% of SOx at reaction temperature of $350^{\circ}C$, space velocity of 10000 $h^{-1}$ and $O_2$ concentrations of 5%, respectively.
This study was carried out to find out potential use of ochre as an agent to reduce phosphorus content in water. Ochre is a by-product from treatment of acid mine drainage (AMD) which is composed mostly of $Fe_2O_3$, $Fe_2O_3{\cdot}H_2O$, $FeO{\cdot}OH$ and $Fe(OH)_3$. Three ochre samples (ochre-H, ochre-D and ochre-S) were collected from three treatment facilities in Gangwon province. Physico-chemical characteristics of three ochre samples including pH, electrical conductivity, total phosphorus, available phosphorus, particle size distribution were analyzed. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis were also carried out. In addition, experiments for phosphorus removal from water was performed. Calcium content of ochre-H was higher than that of ochre-D and ochre-S, whereas iron content of ochre-H was lower than that of ochre-D and ochre-S. All the phosphorus in water up to maximum 191,411 mg $kg^{-1}$ per unit mass of ochre was removed with ochre-H. Ochre has immense potential as an agent to reduce phosphorus content in water.

Column tests of a sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) bioreactor were conducted to determine the design factors for sulfate-rich mine drainage. Various substrates were applied to the bioreactor, including cow manure and its mixture with a mushroom compost, with rice straw and limestone as subsidiary materials. This procedure provided a removal efficiency of up to 82% of the total sulfur with the mixture of cow manure (70%), mushroom compost (10%) and rice straw (20%), and higher efficiencies were observed after 2 days of retention time. In the downflow condition of the flow direction, oxygen supply and re-oxidation of the sulfates occurred, causing a decrease in sulfate removal efficiency. The addition of an inorganic sludge containing heavy metals, which was intended for production of metal-sulfides in the bioreactor, had a negative effect on the long-term operation owing to arsenic release and toxicity to the SRB. The results thus show that a bioreactor using a mixed substrate with cow manure and operating in the downflow direction could reduce sulfates and total dissolved sulfur content; this process confirms the applicability of the SRB bioreactor to sulfate-rich saline drainage.
Removal efficiencies of soil washing and soil improvement processes to remediate farmland soils and stream deposits around Goro abandoned mine were investigated with batch and column experiments. For As-contaminated farm-land soils around Goro mine, batch tests to quantify As extraction rate from contaminated soils and lime treated contaminated soils were performed. The contaminated soil mixed with lime decreased As extraction rate less than one fourth, suggesting that the soil improvement method mixed with lime dramatically decrease As extraction rate. A storage dam will be constructed in the lower part of the main stream connected to Goro abandoned mine and the amount of As extracted from the bottom soils of reservoir could be the main source to contaminate water of reservoir. The decrease of As extraction amount from the bottom in reservoir, caused by the application of the soil improvement method was investigated from the physically simulated column experiment and results showed that As extraction rate decreased to one forty when 1% lime mixed soil improvement was applied to contaminated soils. For contaminated stream deposits connected Goro mine, the removal efficiency of the soil washing method was investigated with batch experiments. Hydrochloric acid, citric acid, acetic acid and distilled water were used as soil washing solution and 0.01, 0.05, 0.1, 0.5, 1.0 N of washing solution were applied to extract As. When washing with 0.05 N of hydrochloric acid or citric acid, more than 99.9% of As was removed from stream deposits, suggesting that As contaminated stream deposits around Goro mine be successfully remediated with the soil washing process. Total volumes of contaminated soils and deposits needed for remediation were calculated based on three different reme-diation target concentrations and the operation cost of soil washing for calculated soil volumes was estimated. Results from this research could be directly used to make a comprehensive countermeasure to remediate contaminated area around Goro mine and also many contaminated areas similar to this research area.
Constructed wetland has been widely used for the treatment of sewage, stormwater runoff, industrial wastewater, agricultural runoff, acid mine drainage and landfill leachate. For the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus, uptake by plants and adsorption to media material are the major processes, and, therefore, the selection of media with specific adsorption capacity is the critical factor for the optimal design of wetland along with the selection of appropriate plant species. In this study, two media materials (loess bead and mixed media) possessing different adsorption characteristics for ammonium and phosphate were selected, and their adsorption characteristics were evaluated. In addition, the performance of subsurface-flow wetland systems employing these media was evaluated in both batch and continuous flow systems. With LB medium, beter phosphorus removal was observed, while better ammonia removal was obtained with MM medium. In addition, enhanced removal efficiencies were observed in the wetland systems employing both media and aquatic plants, mainly due to the better environment for microbial growth. As a result, appropriate selection or combination of media with respect to the inflow water quality maybe important factors for the successful design and operation of wetland systems.
Arsenic is one of the most abundant contaminant found in waste mine tailings, because of it's carcinogenic property, the countries like United states of America and Europe have made stringent regulations which govern the concentration of arsenic in drinking water. The current study focuses on different treatment methods for removal of arsenic from waste water. Treatment method the high strength arsenic waste water is treated with Fe(III)-ettringite by co-precipitation method. Number of experiments were carried out to decide the optimal dosage of Fe(III)-ettringite to treat arsenic waste water. The Fe(III)-ettringite was synthesized by taking appropriate equivalent ratios of calcium oxide and ferric chloride in proportion to the arsenic. The best removal efficiencies of 94% were observed at a As/(Ca: Fe) ratio of 1:3. The maximum removal of arsenic was observed in pH range of 12. But as the pH increases the arsenic removal efficiency decreases as portlandite is formed in the pH above 12. The analysis of surface of precipitate conform the needle like structure of ettringite. This treatment technique has promising features such as, the chemicals required in the treatment as well as the sludge generated can be reduced. The operating pH range is in alkaline region which is advantageous over traditional treatment process which has lower pH. Also the co-precipitation not only helps in removal of arsenic but also heavy metals.

This paper presents the transport and removal of organic substances from the contaminated soft soils and sludges such as marine dredging waste, marine sediments, mine tailing waste, and sewage sludge by electroosmosis. A series of laboratory experiments including variable conditions such as contamination levels, solid contents, and applied voltage rates were peformed with the contaminated soft clay specimen mixed with organic substance. Investigated are specimen density, dewatering rate, outflow rate, and outflow concentration. The test results showed that organic substances in the soils were removed by applied voltages. The results indicated that this process can be used efficiently to clean up the contaminated soil.

The heavy metal removal capacity of filamentous green alga Cladophora sp. cultured together with wet-mixed solidified soil (loess) was tested. A Cladophora sp. was cultured for 5d, with added Chu No. 10 medium, in stream water contaminated by high concentration of heavy metals from a closed mine effluent. Heavy metal ion concentrations of the medium and in algal tissue were measured every day during the experiment. Dissolved metals (Al, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn) in medium were rapidly removed (over 90% elimination) within 1-2d when alga and loess were added. Dissolved heavy metals dropped by only 10% when algae were cultured without loess. The Cladophora sp. accumulated much more heavy metals when cultured with loess than when the alga was cultured alone. Cladophora sp. exhibited a maximum uptake capacity for Al ($17,000{\mu}g^{-1}$ algal dry weight). The metal bioremoval capacities of the algae were in the order Al, Fe, Cu, Mn, Zn and Cd. The heavy metal removal capacity of Cladophora sp. showed significant increases when wet-mixed solidified soil was added to culture media.
It is very important that selection of packing media with large surface area, high limited back pressure in biofilter. The object of this study is the isolation of sulfur-oxidizing bacteria and the removal of hydrogen sulfide in biofilter by media. This investigation led to the following results: 1) we isolated Thiobacillus sp. IW. at an abandoned coal mine in Hwasun, Jeonnam Province. 2) The inorganic media showed better results than the organic media from experiments looking at removal characteristics and changes in pressure drop using various media. 3) Among the inorganic media, fibril and PU media showed best performance.

This research is to remove heavy metals from AMD(Acid Mine Drainage) using AFMR(Anaerobic Floating Media Reactor) process. Two AFMR were operated at HRT(hydraulic retention time) of 3 days. COD/sulfate ratio from 0.3 to 0.8, temperature from $30^{\circ}C$ to $35^{\circ}C$, and alkalinity of 1.000mg/l(as $CaCO_3$). At COD/sulfate($SO{_4}^{2-}$) ratio of 0.5 and temperature of $35^{\circ}C$, the ratio of reduced sulfate($SO{_4}^{2-}$)/removed COD(mg/mg) kept about 1 and the reactor achieved 99.99% of Cr, Pb anee Fe, 98% of Cd, and 90% of Mn removal efficiencies, respectively. Decreasing temperature to $30^{\circ}C$ increased the ratio of reduced sulfate($SO{_4}^{2-}$)/removed COD(mg/mg) to 1.37. Amount of sulfate reduction maximized at the temperature of $30^{\circ}C$ and the COD/sulfate ratio of 0.4 in the influent and then removal efficiencies of heavy metals were 99.99% of Fe, 99.99% of Pb, 99,99% of Cr, 97.3% of Mn, 99.9% of Zn, 99.9% of Cd and 99.9% of Cu.
