  • Atypical facial pain is loosely used term to describe some chronic facial pain when the symptoms do not exactly and entirely fit one diagnostic criteria. In many cases of pain disorders, sympathetic system is involved, such as in conditions which symptoms mimic post-herpetic neuralgia or complex regional pain syndrome. We report a case of a patient with atypical facial pain following the reduction of temporomanidbular joint dislocation. The atypical pain which was resistant to analgesic medication was successfully managed with stellate ganglion block. Therefore we suggest that stellate ganglion block can be an effective treatment method for controlling atypical facial pain.

  • The system that can generate biological brain information processing mechanism more precisely may have several abilities such as exact cognition, situation decision, learning and inference, and output decision. In this paper, to implement high level information processing and thinking ability in a complex system, the information processing layer based on the biological brain is introduced. The biological brain information processing mechanism, which is analyzed in this paper, provides fundamental information about intelligent engineering system, and the design of the layer that can mimic the functions of a brain through engineering definitions can efficiently introduce an intelligent information processing method having a consistent flow in various engineering systems. The applications proposed in this paper are expected to take several roles as a unified model that generates information process in various areas, such as engineering and medical field, with a dream of implementing humanoid artificial intelligent system.

  • A laboratory bioassay that incorporates Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) purified crystal protein toxins into an artificial diet has identified three toxins, CryIA(b), CryIA(c), and CryIIA, to by effective against the yellow stemborer, Scirpophaga incertulas(Walker). Research is aimed at engineering rice that incorporates genes of one of or more of these toxins so as to mimic the insecticidal action of the insect to Bt. The paper discusses potential strategies for slowing the rate of adaptation that include the use of multiple Bt toxins, promoters that express the toxins only in specific plant tissues at specific times, and mixing transgenic and non-transgenic plants.

  • A lung cyst is an air-filled lucent structure surrounded by a thin wall. The presence of multiple intrapulmonary cysts is defined as cystic lung disease. Although cystic lung disease is rare, incidental detection has increased significantly in recent years by screening using computed tomography. There are many conditions that can mimic lung cysts and cause cystic lung disease. Clinical, radiographic, and histologic findings are all necessary for a proper diagnosis, and multidisciplinary approaches are frequently required. The aim of this report is to review the causes and characteristics of cystic lung disease to better understand and improve treatment.

  • A two-dimensional backward facing step flow is simulated by using URANS and Detached Eddy Simulations(DES) approaches. Turbulence models adopted for URANS and DES simulations are Spalart-Allmaras(S-A) model and Shear Stress Transport(SST) model. The target flow with ER=1.125, $Re_H=37,500$ is experimentally studied by Driver & Seegmiller. Various versions of DES have been tested in this paper. Results of the simulations are compared with the experimental data available to evaluate the merits and demerits of URANS and several versions of DES. URANS simulation converges to a steady state and hence unsteady characteristics are not featured. DES simulations in general successfully mimic large scale structures and oscillation characteristics of the flow.

  • The present paper deals with the continuous work of extending multi-dimensional limiting process (MLP), which has been quite successfully proposed on two- and three-dimensional structured grids, onto the unstructured grids. The basic idea of the present limiting strategy is to control the distribution of both cell-centered and cell-vertex physical properties to mimic a multi-dimensional nature of flow physics, which can be formulated as so called the MLP condition. The MLP condition can guarantee a high-order spatial accuracy without yielding spurious oscillations. Recently, MLP slope limiter was proposed based on the MUSCL-type reconstruction in two-dimensional case and it can be readily extended to three-dimensional case. Through various numerical analyses and extensive computations, it is observed that the proposed limiters are quite effective in controlling numerical oscillations and very accurate in capturing both discontinuous and continuous multi-dimensional flow features on 3-D tetrahedral grids.

  • Application of machine learning to scheduling problems has focused on improving system performance based on opportunistic selection among multitudes of simple rules. This study proposes a new method of learning scheduling rules, which first establishes qualitatively meaningful criteria and quantitatively optimizes the use of them, a similar way as human scheduler accumulate their expertise. The weighting of these criteria is trained in response to the system states through simulation. To mimic human quantitative feelings, distributed fuzzy sets are used for assessing the system state. The proposed method was applied to job dispatching in a simulated FMS environment. The job-dispatching criteria used were the length of the processing time of a job and the situation of the next workstation. The results show that the proposed method can develop efficient and robust scheduling strategies, which can also provide understandable and usable know-hows to the human scheduler.

  • Genotoxic chemotherapeutics are irreversible DNA targeting agents, which can act as anticancer and antiviral drugs. Natural antibacterial and anticancer enediynes function through the formation of free radicals formed by Bergman-type cycloaromatization and being capable of cleavage of DNA strand. They have been focused primarily on the design and syntheses of simple enediyne structures, which can be mimic their mechanistic feature. Recently. I have been reported the possible application of 4'-bromoacetophenone as a simple photoactivatable DNA cleaving agent, which could be readily prepared and exhibit potent and selective DNA cleaving activity. Herein, we further investigated the activity of 4'-bromoacetophenone-pyrrolecarboxamides, which consist of both DNA cleaving element and recognition unit under various conditions in order to get more understanding of the mechanism of the action and find a broad spectrum of application.

  • In this paper, a three-fingered anthropomorphic robot hand, called SKK Robot Hand 1, is presented. By employing a two-DOF joint mechanism, called Double Active Universal Joint (abbreviated as DAUJ from now on) as its metacarpal joint, the hand makes it possible to mimic humanlike motions. We begin with addressing the motivation of the design and mention how the anthropomorphic feature of a human is realized in the design of SKK Hand I Also, the mechanism of the hand is explained in detail, and advantages in its modular design are discussed. The proposed hand is developed for use as a testbed for dextrous manipulation. It is expected to resolve the increasing demand for robotic applications in unstructured environments. We describe its hardware construction as well as the controller structure including the preliminary results of experiments.

  • We have developed fabrication processes that form a wide-head T-gate with a 0.2 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ gate length using the combination of thickness of each PMMA layer, line doses and development times for applications in millimeter- and micro-waves monolithic integrated circuits. The three-layer resist structure (PMMA/P(MMA-MAA)/PMMA = 1800 $\AA$/5800 A/1900$\AA$), 4nC/cm and over development were used for fabrication of a wide-head T-gate by the conventional double E-beam exposure technology. The experimented results show that the cross sectional area of T-gate fabricated by the proposed method is easily enlarged without additional processes.
