A Study on the Static/Dynamic Stability for the Structure of a Mill Turret with a B-Axis Tilting Facility (B축 회전 기능을 갖춘 복합공구대 구조물의 정/동적 안정성에 관한 연구)

  • Techniques of tool posts are developing such that variable machining is possible using only one machine for the complication of a product's shape and to reduce the machining time. In order to develop a mill turret with a variable machining function with the mounting of mill turret units on a B-axis tilting table, we determine the static/dynamic stability of the structure of the mill turret. To this end, a static structural analysis and a modal analysis were conducted. From the results of the static structural analysis, the maximum stress was found to be less than the allowable stress. By the comparing the results of the modal analysis of the excitation frequencies of the mill turret, there were no resonance regions found. Therefore, the mill turret with the B-axis tilting facility is shown to have good structural integrity.

The Effect of Gear Contact Stiffnesses on the Vibration of Torsional Geared Systems for a Mill Turret (복합공구대 비틀림계 진동에 대한 기어 맞물림 강성의 영향에 관한 연구)

  • This paper describes mathematical models of the torsional geared driving system for the indexing path and the mill driving path in a mill turret. The eigenvalue analysis for the models is conducted both with and without the gear contact stiffnesses. The natural frequency leads to the effect of gear contact stiffnesses on the vibration of torsional geared systems in a mill turret. It is necessary to analyze eigenvalues of the complex geared torsional system in order to prevent the unexpected vibrations.

  • Curvic coupling of mill turret should maintain disk weight and the cutting resistance which occurs the machining operation and must also have power transmission function. In order to improve machining operation range, the ejecting distance from curvic coupling to the disk must increase as much as possible. But moment is increased by the lack of capacity of the curvic coupling. Increase of moment is the cause of vibration/noise and degradation of machining performance not only stability problem. The manufacturer of mill turret has no the design information between the ejecting distance and the cutting resistance with safety of curvic coupling. Therefore this study describes a finite element analysis model of mill turret using ANSYS workbench. The structural analyses and modal analyses with varying of the ejecting distances and cutting resistances are performed. Finally the equation for relationship between the critical ejecting distance and the cutting resistance is defined under 5 of the safety factor for the maximum von-Mises stress at the curvic coupling.

  • Highly functional mill turrets have been developed and continuously improved to shorten the manufacturing time and enable multiple uses. Among these, a mill turret with B-axis rotary table was developed. The B-axis rotary table should be evaluated for structural integrity. Moreover, its worm and worm gear for transmitting power should be able to endure fatigue damage. Therefore, this article presents a structural analysis of this type of B-axis rotary table and confirms its static stability by comparing the stress results to the allowable stress levels. Next, the dynamic stability of the rotary table was investigated via a mode analysis and a harmonic analysis in a range determined by the results of a modal analysis. Finally, a worm gear set, the main part that drives the rotary table, is analyzed for fatigue and to estimate its lifetime. The results of the fatigue analysis allowed a prediction of the life of the worm gear set. The analytical results show that the B-axis rotary table has good structural integrity.

  • In this work, a study on the 5-axis machining of ball gear cam is conducted which is a continuation of reference [1]. The ball gear cam used in this study delivers motion in conjunction with the ball supported by the turret. Therefore, it requires carbonizing heat treatment and is usually completed using a 4-axis machining with a carbide ball end mill. If the nose part of the ball end mill is not allowed to participate in the machining, then CBN tools without the nose part can be used. However, machining of certain shapes can be carried out only by contacting the ball in some of the areas on either side which can improve the surface of the machining. This requires a 5-axis machining in order to maintain a constant angle for the processing path. Therefore, in this work, the 5-axis machining method is studied in order to maintain the direction of the cutter axis at a constant angle with the tangent direction of the curve-ball gear cam. Furthermore, the 5-axis machining program for the ball gear cam was developed and the machining experiment was completed and verified.

  • The automatic tool changer of a machining center consists of a tool magazine and a cam box, and the core components of the cam box are a roller gear cam and a turret. Recently, the roller gear cam of a cam box has been replaced by a ball gear cam. In this study, the design and machining method of ball gear cam for an automatic tool changer was studied. Additionally, an algorithm for a 4-axis post processing method was established from an instrumental formula by designing a ball gear cam, thus preventing machining at the bottom of ball end mill and enabling the ball on the turret to be driven at the entrance and exit of a curve without collision due to machining errors. In conclusion, machining using only the 4-axis method including the C-axis on a BC -Type 5-axis machine produced the desired ball gear cam.

  • 기계가공(Machining)중에서 가장 기본적인 것이 선삭(Turning)작업이며, 이 가공은 선반(Lathe)에 의해서 행하여지고 있는 것은 다 아는 사실이다. 공작기계의 발달과 금속 절삭 원리(Principles of metal cutting)는 선반을 중심으로 약 일세기동안 꾸준히 발전해 오고 있으며, 수없이 쏟아져 나온 연구논문들의 대부분이 선반에 의한 가공과 그 공작기계에 의해서 이루어졌으며 앞으로도 계속 보통선반, CNC선반의 토대 위에서 이루어지리라고 보고 있다. 공작기계 중에서 CNC 선반의 발달 과정을 요약해보면 1960년대의 대량 생산시대에는 Programmable control 방식의 자동 터렛트(Turret) 선반이 개발되어 생산 공정이 비교적 간단한 양산 가공기로서 환영을 받게 되었다. 1970년대에 들어서면서 다품종소량생산이 중요시되었고, 그때 NC 선반시대가 시작되었다고 볼 수 있다. 현 싯점에서 볼 때 이것은 중품종중량생산 이라고 말할 수 있으며, Turret 선반의 NC화 즉, Multi-tool에 의한 선반의 복합가공이 가능해졌지만 Tooling에 문제가 발생하였다. 1980년에 들어서 각종 MC 들이 광범위하게 발달, 보급되는 경향에 따라서 NC 선반도 고능률화의 일환으로 고속화와 더불어 회전공구인 End mill. Drill. Tap 등의 복합가공이 가능한 복합선반이 차례로 개발되었고 선삭공구와 회전공구등의 자동공구교환(Automatic Tool. Changing. ATC)이 가능해지고 Y축 보정(Co-mpensation)기구를 부착한 대형 Turning center가 개발되어 보급되게 되었다.

A Study on the Vibration/Noise Reduction of a Gear Driving System by Adjusting the Distance between Gear Shafts (기어열의 축간거리 조절을 통한 진동/소음 저감에 대한 연구)

  • This article proposes a new technique for the reduction of vibration and noise in the geared system by adjusting the distance between gear shafts. The vibration and noise may be produced by the abnormal force applied to the tooth face. And the force may be the cause of ununiform velocity in the driven shaft. If the velocity is obtained to be uniform by adjusting the distance between shafts. the vibration and noise may be reduced to some extent. In order to review, a dynamic analysis model for the gear train used in a mill turret and a test rig are developed. The velocities in the driven shaft are calculated by dynamic simulations for the model and noises in the test rig are measured with varying of the distance between shafts. The comparison of simulation and test data shows that the distance between shafts at the most uniform velocity has the lowest level of noise.
