Autonomy of unmanned systems is important because the unmanned system with high level of autonomy is able to perform desired tasks in unstructured environments without continuous human guidance. Evaluation of their autonomy is vital to realize the autonomous operation ability of unmanned system. Compared to the methods of evaluating the level of autonomy(LOA) for an unmanned ground vehicle(UGV) and unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV), the method of expressing the LOA of unmanned maritime system(UMS) is not established yet. Since UMS has a unique characteristics in terms of operational area, mission complexity and required technologies, compared to the UGV and UAV, it is required to establish for expressing the LOA for UMS. This paper reviews the current approaches to assess the LOA of unmanned system and proposes potential metrics for UMS in order to determine the autonomy levels of UMS.
This paper deals with an unmanned vehicle system configuration using all terrain vehicle. Many research institutes and university study and develop unmanned vehicle system and control algorithm. Now a day, they try to apply unmanned vehicle to use military device and explore space and deep sea. These unmanned vehicles can help us to work is difficult task and approach. In the previous research of unmanned vehicle in our lab, we used 1/10 scale radio control vehicle and composed the unmanned vehicle system using ultrasonic sensors, CCD camera and kinds of sensor for vehicle's motion control. We designed lane detecting algorithm using vision system and obstacle detecting and avoidance algorithm using ultrasonic sensor and infrared ray sensor. As the system is increased, it is hard to compose the system on the 1/10 scale RC car. So we have to choose a new vehicle is bigger than 1/10 scale RC car but it is smaller than real size vehicle. ATV(all terrain vehicle) and real size vehicle have similar structure and its size is smaller. In this research, we make unmanned vehicle using ATV and explain control theory of each component
One of the most significant UUV(Unmanned Underwater Vehicle) applications is MCM(Mine Countermeasure), which makes good use of UUV characteristics to provide covert, rapid, controlled and efficient survey of a potential minefield without risking a human operator. In this paper, a survey of the today's MCM missions where UUVs will play a role, the vehicle systems that are either under development or planned in the future are presented. And examines principal technical challenges and outline new enabling technologies. Particularly, this paper analyses current approaches to tacking these technologies and technological limitation of UUVs as a MCM platform, and research efforts to develop the technology necessary to meet the domestic MCM mission needs.
The use of robot is no longer limited in the industrial scene, and becoming expanded toward many aspects of human life. Especially, military robot closely concerned with our lives seems to advance more and more in the future. As a need analysis for developing military robot, this project conducted a poll about Unmanned Reconnaissance Robot, and on the basis of the result, I suggested 3 directions of developing UGV(Unmanned Ground Vehicle) suitable to strategic environment of Korea.
An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is a powered aerial vehicle that does not carry a human operator, uses aerodynamic forces to provide vehicle lift, can fly autonomously or be piloted remotely, can be expendable or recoverable, and can carry a lethal or non-lethal payload. An UAV is very important weapon system and is currently being employed in many military missions (surveillance, reconnaissance, communication relay, targeting, strike, etc.) in the war. To accomplish UAV's missions, guarantee of survivability should be preceded. The main objective of this study is a local path planning to maximize survivability for UAV on the battlefield of dynamic threats (obstacles, surface-to-air missiles, radar etc.). A local path planning is capable of producing a new path in response to environmental changes. This study suggests a $Smart$$A^*$ (Smart A-star) algorithm for local path planning. The local path planned by $Smart$$A^*$ algorithm is compared with the results of existing algorithms ($A^*$$Replanner$, $D^*$) and evaluated performance of $Smart$$A^*$ algorithm. The result of suggested algorithm gives the better solutions when compared with existing algorithms.
Localization is very important for the autonomous navigation of Unmanned Ground Vehicles; however, it is difficult that they have a precise Inertial Navigation System(INS) sensor, especially Small Unmanned Ground Vehicle(SUGV). Moreover, there are some condition such as denial of global position system(GPS), GPS/INS integrated system is not robust. This paper proposes the estimation algorithm with optical flow sensor and INS. Being compared with previous researches, the proposed algorithm is suitable for skid steering vehicles. We revised the measurement model of previous research for the accuracy of side direction position. Experimental results were performed to verify the algorithm, and the result showed an excellent performance.
One of the basic technology for implementing the autonomy of UGV(Unmanned Ground Vehicle) is a path planning algorithm using obstacle and raw terrain information which are gathered from perception sensors such as stereo camera and laser scanner. In this paper, we propose a generation method of DVGM(Directional Velocity Grid Map) which have traverse speed of UGV for the five heading directions except the rear one. The fuzzy system is designed to generate a resonable traveling speed for DVGM from current patch to the next one by using terrain slope, roughness and obstacle information extracted from raw world model data. A simulation is conducted with world model data sampled from real terrain so as to verify the performance of proposed fuzzy inference system.
This study shows the path generation algorithm for an UGV (Unmanned Ground Vehicle). The developed UGV frame which has a 4-wheel driven mechanism and diesel source is applied. Proposed vehicle system in this research is aimed to military purpose. To achieve the unmanned autonomous driving, following two main issues are considered. First, behavior module for positioning and posture of vehicle system and second, cognition module to receive the information from environment are proposed and verified. To do this, rover which can acquire the positioning information from earth coordinate and IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) which can measure the posture are combined to design the path planning algorithm.
Remote-controlled and autonomous driving based on artificial intelligence are key elements required for unmanned combat vehicles. The required capability of such an unmanned combat vehicle should be expressed in reasonable required operational capability(ROC). To this end, in this paper, the requirements of an unmanned combat vehicle operated under a manned-unmanned teaming were analyzed. The functional requirements are remote operation and control, communication, sensor-based situational awareness, field environment recognition, autonomous return, vehicle tracking, collision prevention, fault diagnosis, and simultaneous localization and mapping. Remote-controlled and autonomous driving of unmanned combat vehicles could be achieved through the combination of these functional requirements. It is expected that the requirement analysis results presented in this study will be utilized to satisfy the military operational concept and provide reasonable technical indicators in the system development stage.
