Tetrahydrobiopterin Inhibits PDGF-stimulated Migration and Proliferation in Rat Aortic Smooth Muscle Cells via the Nitric Oxide Synthase-independent Pathway

  • Tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4), an essential cofactor for nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activity, is known to play important roles in modulating both NO and superoxide production during vascular diseases such as atherosclerosis. However, the role of BH4 in functions of vascular smooth muscle cells is not fully known. In this study, we tested the effects of BH4 and dihydrobiopterin (BH2), a BH4 precursor, on migration and proliferation in response to platelet-derived growth factor-BB (PDGF-BB) in rat aortic smooth muscle cells (RASMCs). Cell migration and proliferation were measured using a Boyden chamber and a 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine incorporation assay, respectively, and these results were confirmed with an ex vivo aortic sprout assay. Cell viability was examined by 2,3-bis [2-methoxy-4-nitro-5-sulfophenyl]-2H-tetrazolium-5-carboxanilide assays. BH4 and BH2 decreased PDGF-BBinduced cell migration and proliferation in a dose-dependent manner. The inhibition of cell migration and proliferation by BH4 and BH2 was not affected by pretreatment with $N^G$-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester, a NOS inhibitor. Moreover, the sprout outgrowth formation of aortic rings induced by PDGF-BB was inhibited by BH4 and BH2. Cell viability was not inhibited by BH4 and BH2 treatment. The present results suggest that BH4 and BH2 may inhibit PDGF-stimulated RASMC migration and proliferation via the NOS-independent pathway. Therefore, BH4 and its derivative could be useful for the development of a candidate molecule with an NO-independent anti-atherosclerotic function.

러시아 극동지역 한인이주민의 직업에 대한 연구: 비농업직(非農業職)을 중심으로 (Non-Agricultural Occupations of Korean Immigrants at the Russian Far East)

  • 본 논문에서는 1860년대에서 1930년대까지 비농업직을 중심으로 하여 러시아 극동지역의 한인 이주민의 직업에 관하여 고찰한다. 먼저 이주민의 직업선택과 노동시장에서의 위치에 관한 이론들 즉 문화이론, 분절노동시종이론, 인적자본론 및 인종적 특수시장이론 등을 살펴보고 이들 이론이 러시아 극동지역 이주한인의 직업들 중 농업을 제외한 여러 가지 직종에 어떻게 적용되는지를 검토한다. 이러한 과정을 통해서 기존 이론들에서는 이주민의 직업에 관한 공급적 측면과 수요적 측면을 모두 분리하여 고찰하고 있다는 한계성을 지적한다. 이러한 한계성을 극복하기 위하여 본 논문에서는 러시아 극동지역 한인 이주민의 사례를 들어 이주민의 직업에 관한 두 가지 측면을 모두 통합해야 할 필요성을 설명하고 이를 위해 공급적·수요적 측면을 모두 고려할 수 있는 통합적 모델을 제시한 후 이러한 모델에 따라 러시아 극동지역 한인이주민의 직업에 영향을 키친 요인들을 광업, 어업, 자영업종, 서비스직종, 기타 단순 노무직 등으로 나누어 고찰한다. 마지막으로 이주의 통합적 모형에서 공급적 측면에 포함되는 것으로서는 한인의 농업중심적 성격, 이민직전의 조선에서의 사회경제적 모순 및 한인의 자급자족적 성격 등과 수요적 측면에서는 러시아의 이민정책과 러시아 극동의 다양한 지역적 상황이 고려되어야 함을 지적하였다.

네이밍 에이전트의 메타데이터를 이용한 이동 에이전트의 적응적 이주 경로 기법 (Adaptive Migration Path Technique of Mobile Agent Using the Metadata of Naming Agent)

  • 이동 에이전트는 에이전트 코드 자체가 서버로 이동하여 주어진 작업을 수행한다. 이 때 노드 이주 방법은 분산 시스템의 전체 성능에 큰 영향을 줄 수 있는 요소가 된다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 네이밍 에이전트의 메타데이터를 이용한 이동 에이전트의 적응적 이주 경로 기법을 제안한다. 제안 기법에서 노드 이주의 선택은 참조된 메타데이터의 정보에 의존하며, 이주 정보의 신뢰성은 멀티 에이전트의 각 에이전트 시스템들의 상호 협력 및 메타데이터 갱신 방법에 의해 결정된다. 이를 위해 적중 문건 수 적중률, 노드 처리 및 네트워크 지연 시간 등의 정보로 메타데이터를 설계하고 이를 이용하여 각 에이전트의 상호 관계와 적중 문건의 수에 따라 이동 에이전트의 적응적 이주 경로를 결정하기 위한 메타데이터의 생성, 이용 및 갱신하는 방법을 기술한다. 그리고 제안 이주 기법을 실험 및 분석을 통해 성능을 평가한 결과 메타데이터를 적용한 경우는 13개 노드만을 순회하면 될 뿐 아니라, 수집된 문건에 대한 적중률(72%) 또한 높기 때문에 높은 유효정보 확보율을 얻을 수 있다. 하지만 메타데이터를 적용하지 않은 경우는 26개의 노드를 순회하여 수집된 문건에 대한 적중률이 46%이며 사용자가 원하는 유효정보를 포함하고 있을 유효정보 확보율은 36.8% 이다.

수도권 도시유형별 내부 인구이동 영향요인 분석 (Analysis of the Factors Affecting on Internal Population Migration in Seoul Metropolitan Area)

  • 본 연구는 지역간 인구이동보다는 내부 인구이동이 증가하고 있는 수도권을 대상으로 전출입 인구현황을 파악하고, 도시유형을 분석한 후 유형별 인구이동 영향요인을 분석하였다. 수도권 시 군 구별 전출입 인구를 분석한 결과, 서울시는 송파구, 인천시는 서구, 남동구, 경기도는 용인시, 화성시 등으로 인구가 집중하였다. 수도권 시 군 구간 전출입 현황에서는 수원시에서 화성시, 성남시에서 용인시로 이동하는 인구가 많았다. 고용밀도와 인구밀도를 변수로 한 도시유형분석에서는 4개의 도시유형(도심형, 자족형, 주거형, 도농형)으로 분류되었다. 도심형인 유형1은 전세가격, 도로연장, 지하철역 수, 자족형인 유형2는 총소득 증가율, 주택보급률, 도로연장, 주거형인 유형3은 주택보급률, 도시공원면적, 전세가격, 인구밀도, 도농형인 유형4는 사업체밀도, 주택보급률, 주택공급, 지하철역 수, 교육시설 등이 인구이동에 영향을 주는 것으로 분석되었다. 이중 주택보급률은 전입인구에 긍정적인 영향을 미쳤으나 인구밀도의 경우 전출인구에 영향을 주었다. 도로, 지하철역 수의 경우 도심형은 전출인구에 영향을 주었으나, 자족형과 도농형에서는 전입인구에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타나 유형별로 각기 다른 영향을 보였다.

Return Migration in Regional Innovation Systems

  • This study aims to explore and understand the role of return migrants in the regional innovation system of a transition economy (China) by analyzing the activities of returning entrepreneurs in two emerging high-tech industries in Shanghai. The empirical analysis is based on in-depth interviews with founders of high-tech companies and experts in Shanghai. The results of the analysis reveal that return migrants are a significant factor for the Shanghai innovation system, which is presently in a transition from a former manufacturing site to a metropolitan region comprising a range of industries (including high-tech) and services. First of all, return migrants are important for the Shanghai RIS in terms of numbers. Second, they engage in activities in the medium range of high-tech which reflects prevailing weaknesses of the framework conditions for innovation in Shanghai. However, due to their international background, returning entrepreneurs are able to overcome these weaknesses, and thus contribute to the development of high-tech industries in Shanghai and to a reduction of the technological lock-in.

A study on heavy metal migration in fly ash/bentonite using a reactive transport model

  • The retardation of heavy metals in a mixture of fly ash and bentonite was studied as a potential barrier material for a landfill. Column tests were conducted using synthetic leachate having 100 mg/L and 50 mg/L of lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd), respectively. Results indicated that the mixture had obvious retardation ability for heavy metals. To investigate the retardation factor caused by adsorption, batch adsorption tests were conducted at various concentrations. Test results were correlated with both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The adsorption of the lead ion was applicable to the Langmuir isotherm and the adsorption of the cadmium ion was applicable to the Freundlich isotherm. In addition, based on experimental results, the migration characteristics of heavy metals through the bed of fly ash and bentonite mixture were investigated using the PHREEQC, a reactive transport model, under the real conditions of the landfill liner.

Glut1 promotes cell proliferation, migration and invasion by regulating epidermal growth factor receptor and integrin signaling in triple-negative breast cancer cells

  • Elevated glucose levels in cancer cells can be attributed to increased levels of glucose transporter (GLUT) proteins. Glut1 expression is increased in human malignant cells. To investigate alternative roles of Glut1 in breast cancer, we silenced Glut1 in triple-negative breast-cancer cell lines using a short hairpin RNA (shRNA) system. Glut1 silencing was verified by Western blotting and qRT-PCR. Knockdown of Glut1 resulted in decreased cell proliferation, glucose uptake, migration, and invasion through modulation of the EGFR/MAPK signaling pathway and integrin ${\beta}1$/Src/FAK signaling pathways. These results suggest that Glut1 not only plays a role as a glucose transporter, but also acts as a regulator of signaling cascades in the tumorigenesis of breast cancer.

Experimental and Theoretical Studies on the Dynamic Characteristics During Speed Down of Inverter Heat Pump

  • A series of tests were performed to verify the transient characteristics of heat pump in heating and cooling mode when operating speed was varied over the 30 to 102Hz. One of the major issues that has not been addressed so far is transient characteristics during speed modulation. The model for cycle simulation has been developed to predict the cycle performance under conditions of decreasing drive frequency and the results of the theoretical study were compared with the results of the experimental study. The simulated results were in good agreement with the experimental result within 10%. The transient cycle migration of the liquid state refrigerant causes significant dynamic change in system. Thus, the migration of refrigerant was the most important factor whenever do experimental results analysis or develop simulation model.

귀어·귀촌 적지지표 개발에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Development of Suitability Site Indicator for Urban-Rural Migration/Return to Fishing)

  • The aim of this study is to develop suitability site indicator of urban-rural return to fishing and to analysis priority of the indicators. The study is based on literature review, expert survey and AHP(Analytic Hierarchy Process) methods. This study found 5 factors(natural environment, acceptance environment, social overhead capital, economy, fishing environment) and 21 detail variables. as a result of AHP, fisheries resources, acquisition convenience of fishing license, income(except fishing), attitude of local resident, one-person household income, high income fishing were showed high priority. This result indicate that economic foundation is most important factor for suitable site of the returning.

Living as Foreign Scientists: Stories of Nineteen Expatriate Professors in South Korea

  • This paper discusses an important dimension of the globalization of science by investigating the lived experiences of nineteen expatriate scientists in six institutions in South Korea. Although much has been written on the globalization and science, few works have dealt with scientific experts? migration across national borders in contemporary contexts. In this regard, the lives of foreign science professors in Korea offer an interesting case, as they illustrate how the ideas of global science both clash with and appropriate Korea?s local practices and discourses. I argue that the globality of science is a main factor that fosters the continued Korean stay of many foreign scientists, who manage and appropriate what is entailed in this globality, namely, Korea?s perceived status as a peripheral country in the dynamics between "center" and "periphery." This includes several strategies and unintended situations differing according to each foreign scientist?s ethnic origins, professional experiences, and institutional circumstances, which lead them to make sense of their continued stay in Korea.
