  • This study investigates the causal relationship between stock prices and exchange rates for six Middle Eastern countries, namely, Egypt, Iran, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, and Saudi Arabia before and during (after) the 2007 global financial crisis for the period between January 2004 and September 2015. The sample is divided into two sub-periods, that is, the period from January 1, 2004 to September 30, 2007 and the period from October 1, 2007 to September 30, 2015, to represent the pre-crisis period and the post-crisis period, respectively. Using Vector Autoregressive (VAR) model in a multivariate framework (including two control variables, inflation rates and oil prices) the results suggest that in the case of Jordan, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, there exists bidirectional causalities after the crisis period but not the before. The opposite status is available for the case of Iran. In the case of Oman, there is bidirectional causality between the variables of interest in both periods. The results also reveal that the relationship between stock prices and exchange rates has become stronger after the 2007 global financial crisis. Overall, the results of this study indicate that fluctuations in foreign exchange markets can significantly affect stock markets in the Middle East.

  • It was found that three different water masses were vertically situated in the western channel of the Korea Strait in summer. Of these water masses , the origin and inflow path of the middle water were discussed and estimated by comparing with water characteristics of neighbouring sea. As a result, (1) the middle water is formed on the continental shelf in the East China Sea by the mixing of the Kuroshio Water and Chinese Continental Coastal Water, (2) the middle water seems intruded through the sea around 127 E west off Kyushu Island and east off Cheju the Island.

  • Unruptured non-traumatic dissecting aneurysm in the M4 segment of the middle cerebral artery (MCA) accompanied by complete occlusion of the ipsilateral internal cerebral artery (ICA) has never been reported. A 41-year-old man presented with an infarction manifesting as left-sided weakness and dysarthria. Magnetic resonance angiography revealed a subacute stage infarction in the right MCA territory and complete occlusion of the right ICA. Angiography demonstrated aneurysmal dilatation of the M4 segment of the right MCA. Surgery was performed to prevent hemorrhage from the aneurysm. The aneurysm was proximally clipped guided by Navigation-CT angiography and flow to the distal MCA was restored by superficial temporal artery-middle cerebral artery (STA-MCA) anastornosis. We report this rare case with literature review.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate nutritional knowledge, nutrition attitude and food preference among middle school students and to evaluate the effect of nutrition deucation in middle school. The survey was conducted from June 15, to June 25, 1993 by questionnaires which was composed of ntrition knowledge test, nutrition attitude test and food preference test. The subjects of this study were composed of 106 male and 105 female students of middle school. The results obtained were summarized as follows: Nutrition knowledge score Nutrition Knowledge score Nutrition knowledge score of female group was significantly higher than that of male group at P<0.001 Nutrition Attitude Score Nutrition Attituds Score of female group was significantly higher than that of male group at P<0.001 Correlations between nutrition knowledge and nutrition attitude scores in both group were significant Food Preferences Preferences for pork cutlet, hot dog, chicken, beef, kim chi, cooked rice, ptoato were high in both groups.

  • Contact monitoring is an essential component of the public health response to a Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus outbreak, and is required for an effective quarantine to contain the epidemic. The timeliness of a quarantine is associated with its effectiveness. This paper provides a conceptual framework to describe the process of contact monitoring, and proposes a new measure called the "timely quarantined proportion" as a tool to assess the adequacy of a public health response.

  • The path of a flapping airfoil during upstroke and down-stroke is optimized for maximum thrust and propulsive efficiency. The periodic flapping motion in combined pitch and plunge is described using Non-Uniform B-Splines(NURBS). A gradient based algorithm is employed for optimization of the NURBS parameters. Unsteady, low speed laminar flows are computed using a Navier-Stokes solver in a parallel computing environment based on domain decomposition. It is shown that the thrust generation is significantly improved in comparison to the sinusoidal flapping motion. For a high thrust generation, the airfoil stays at a high effective angle of attack for short durations.

  • Echinococcal or hydatid cyst is one of the most important zoonoses and commonly seen throughout the world, especially sheep and cattle raising areas, but rare in Korea. The causative organism, Echinococcus granulosus, is a small tapeworm and dogs are the usual source of infestation. Lung is the second most common focus for this disease, after liver. Recently, with increasing numbers of Koreans visiting to those endemic countries especially Middle East, the reports of hydatidosis are increasing. Authors experienced two cases of pulmonary hydatid cyst in the 31 year old male and 44 year old male who had a history of spending 2 * 3 years in Middle East. we found them in incidental routine chest X-ray.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the satisfaction with school foodservice programs by foodservice operation type in middle school and high school students in the Geumsan-Gun area. A total of 530 subjects(250 middle school and 280 high school students) from the Geumsan-Gun area participated from March 15 to March 23, 2004. Questionnaires were used to study dietary habits, activity levels, and current health conditions. The results of the study are summarized as follows. Based on the body mass index(BMI) scores of the students, the high school male BMI scores were significantly different(5%), and they were underweight for their height. The students were primarily dissatisfied with times for meals for school foodservice under direct management and with the quantity of meal for school foodservice under contract. Compared to the middle school female students, the male high school students were dissatisfied with the time for meals and quantity of food. Generally, the students were satisfied with dessert items the most. The food most often wasted was soup. The middle and high school students preferred food services to those under contract.
