  • This paper presents an experimental measurement system for 3-6 GHz microwave tomography (MT) of the breast. The measurement system is constructed as a minimal test bed to verify key components such as the sensing antennas, radio frequency (RF) transceiver, sensing mechanism, and image reconstruction method for our advanced MT system detecting breast cancer at an early stage. The test bed has eight RF channels operating at 3 to 6 GHz for high spatial resolution and a two-axis scanning mechanism for three-dimensional measurement. The measurement results from the test bed are shown and discussed.

  • Ready-mixed concrete(RMC) has been a major construction materials for infrastructures. However, RMC with poor quality is reported to be social issue since it directly user's safety and convenience. Because the properties of concrete as a construction material are greatly influenced by the variation of water content, to control water accurately is the most efficient method for the quality control in RMC industry. In this study, the automatic measurement technology of fine aggregate was developed by using the microwave moisture measurement. For the various conditions of fine aggregate such as moisture, temperature and pressure, the calibration curve of moisture measurement was obtained by using oven-dry method. From the infield and outfield test, it can be obtained that the accuracy of microwave moisture measurement is very high and the automatic system of microwave moisture measurement is very convenient and useful for quality control in RMC Industry.

  • A prototype for a highly sensitive, automated measurement system for the microwave surface resistance of high-T$_c$ superconductor films was set up, and tested by measuring the microwave surface resistances of high-T$_c$ YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-{\delta}}$(YBCO) films at the frequency of about 19.6 GHz and the temperature of 30 K ${\sim}$ 90 K. An open-ended TE$_{011}$ mode sapphire-loaded cylindrical cavity resonator was used as the measurement probe, where YBCO films were used as the endplates of the cylindrical cavity. The characteristics of the measurement system include functions to display the unloaded ${\varrho}$ and the resonant frequency of the TE$_{011}$ mode resonator as well as the microwave surface resistance of the YBCO films, all simultaneously as a function of temperature. Applicability of the measurement system for investigating the homogeneity in the microwave properties of large high-T$_c$ superconductor films is discussed.

  • Passive microwave remote sensing technique have shown great potential for mon monitoring regional/global surface soil moisture. Given a single measurement at dual polarization/single frequency/single view angle, a strategic approach to artificially generating multiple microwave brightness temperatures is presented. And then the statistically generated microwave brightness temperature data are applied to the inverse algorithm, which mainly relies on a physically based microwave emission model and an advanced single-criterion multi-parameter optimization technique, to simultaneously retrieve soil moisture and vegetation characteristics. . The procedure is tested with dual polarized Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission Microwave Imager (TRMM/TMI) over two different cover sites in Oklahoma and Beltsville field experimental data. The retrieval results are analyzed and show excellent performance.

  • A nondestructive moisture measurement technique has been applied to improve the previous moisture measurement method in the building research. The experiment was done in free space using horns since it is the key element for continuous and non-destructive measurement. For this purpose a microwave bridge type analyzer at the frequency of 9.5 GHz was used to determine the moisture content of sands in the range of 1~12%. From this, the representative calibration curves were obtained. This shows that moisture measurement technique using microwave is applicabe to the measurement of moisture in non-metallic materials such as coal, pulp, foods, building materials, etc.

  • Applying microwave, a velocity measurement system has been developed in order to measure the velocity of stream water surface. It's main purpose is the measurement for high velocity of flood water. It is under the developing stage of experimental measurement system. The microwave surface velocity meter uses Doppler effects of microwave. It consists of a radio frequency(RF) part and that of signal processing. Thr RF part has the function of microwave oscillation, reception of reflected wave, and determination of Doppler frequency, etc. Signal processing designates amplification, fast Fourier transform, etx. Various measuring experiments were performed at bridges and a spillway of Taechong re-regulation dam with the microwave velocity meter. Verification test was also made through water tank of ship model test at Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering. It shows 4% error inherent in A/D converter and additional several percentage errors from measurement circumstance. The measuring ranges are from 0.5 to 3.5 m/s. The result shows good linear relationship between carriage velocity and measured velocity, thus proves usefulness as a measuring instrument for flood water velocity. The instrument requires overall re-engineering procedure and number of data should be accumulated and analyzed to treat wind effects and random fluctuations of water surface.

  • The dielectric properties of cereal grains such as short-grain rough rice, brown rice and barley with various moisture contents were determined by measuring the attenuation and phase shift of the microwave signal trough the grain samples at 9.5GHz. The microwave free-space transmission measurement system consisted of sample holder, horn antenna and network analyzer. Dielectric constant and loss factor of grain samples increased with moisture content and bulk density and agreed well with previous research results. Moisture density, which is defined as the product of moisture content and bulk density, was proposed as a bulk density and variety compensation factor. The technique for measurement of dielectric properties based on free-space transmission may be useful for other particulate materials.

  • In this paper, frequency modulated(FM) reflectometry is proposed to measure group velocity of microwave transmission line Various microwave transmission lines such as periodically loaded conducting posts in a waveguide and nonradiative dielectric(NRD) guide are adopted to measure their group velocity The result compared with that from network analyzer shows good agreement, indicating the validity of our measurement method.

  • Radio frequency (RF) and microwave power is one of the key quantities in the framework of electromagnetic measurement standards. Therefore, the stability of the power standard is essential to users' reliable measurements in various areas. Coaxial and waveguide thermistor mounts are used as transfer standards of RF and microwave power. Over decades, the effective efficiencies of thermistor mounts have been measured using coaxial and waveguide microcalorimeters in the frequency range of 10 MHz-40 GHz. The measurement uncertainty of the effective efficiency is evaluated. Results show that the power standards have been well maintained within the measurement uncertainty.
