Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Alumina/Zirconia Layered Composites (알루미나/지르코니아 층상 복합체의 미세구조 및 기계적 성질)

  • Symmetric three-layer $Al_2O_3/ZrO_2$ composite has been prepared by freeze casting and pressureless sintering at $1400-1600^{\circ}C$ in air. The layered material sintered at $1600^{\circ}C$ showed the maximum fracture strength (410 MPa), measured by a four-point bending test. Contact damage strength was superior in three-layer composite compared with corresponding mono-layered material, possibly due to the development of relatively large compressive stress. The grain growth of $ZrO_2$ particles was mainly governed by coalescence mechanism.

  • The machinability of materials is an important factor in engineering applications. Many ceramic components that have complex shapes require machining, typically using diamond tools, which leads to high production cost. Machinable ceramics containing h-BN have recently been developed, but these materials are very expensive because of high cost of raw materials and machining. Therefore the development of low-cost machinable ceramics is desirable. In this study, mullite-$ZrO_2$ ceramics were prepared additions of $Al_2TiO_5$. $ZrSiO_4$, $Al_2O_3$, and $Al_2TiO_5$ powders mixed at various molar ratios with sintering at 1400, 1500, and $1600^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr. Phase formation and microstructure of the sintered ceramics were observed by XRD and SEM, respectively. The machinability of each specimen was tested using the micro-hole machining method. The machinability results show that the ceramics sintered at temperatures over $1500^{\circ}C$ can be used as good low-cost machinable mullite-$ZrO_2-Al_2TiO_5$ ceramics.

  • New conductor is developed by using high strength nonmagnetic steel(NM) wire as the core of overhead conductor This conductor is called ACNR overhead conductor(Aluminum Conductor Nonmagnetic Steel Reinforced). Formed by the combination of aluminum alloy wire and high strength nonmagnetic steel wire, it has about the same weight and diameter as conventional ACSR overhead conductor. To enhance properties beneficial in an electrical and mechanical conductor during the Process of high strength nonmagnetic steel wire, we made a large number of improvements and modifications in the working process, aluminum cladded method, and other process. ACNR overhead conductor, we successfully developed, has mechanical and electrical properties as good as or even better than conventional galvanized wire. Microstructure of raw material NM wire was austenite and then deformed martensite after drawing process. Strength at room temperature is about $180kgf/mm^2\~200kgf/mm^2$. The conductivity at 0.78 mm thickness of Aluminum cladded M wire is about $7\%$ IACS higher than $20\%$IACS of HC wire used as core of commercial ACSR overhead conductor. The corrosion resistance is about 3 times higher than that of HC wire.

Microstructure and Permeability Property of Si Bonded Porous SiC with Variations in the Carbon Content (Si 결합 다공성 탄화규소의 미세구조 및 통기도 특성 -카본 함량 변화 중심)

  • The achievement of high gas permeability is a key factor in the development of porous SiC ceramics for applications of hot gas filter, vacuum chuck, and air spindle. However, few reports on the gas permeability of porous SiC ceramics can be found in the literature. In this paper, porous SiC ceramics were fabricated at temperatures ranging from $1600^{\circ}C$ to $1800^{\circ}C$ using the mixing powders of SiC, silicon, carbon and boron as starting materials. In some samples, expanded hollow microspheres as a pore former were used to make a cellular pore structure. It was possible to produce Si bonded SiC ceramics with porosities ranging from 42% to 55%. The maximum bending strength was 58MPa for the carbon content of 0.2 wt% and sintering temperature of $1700^{\circ}C$. The increase of air permeability was accelerated by addition of hollow microsphere as a pore former.

A Study on High Temperature Fracture Behavior of Plasma Sprayed Zirconia/ NiCrAlY Coating System (지르코니아 /NiCrAlY 계 플라즈마 용사피막의 고온 파괴거동에 관한 연구)

  • This paper describes experimental results of modified small punch( MSP) test conducted to evaluate the fracure characteristics and mechanical properties of plasma sparayed zirconia ($ZrO_2$ stabilized with 8wt. % $Y_20_3$ : YSZ) NiCrAlY composite. The mixing ratios of YSZ/NiCrAlY were 0/100, 25/75, 50/50, 100/0 v.%. Test temperatures ranged from 293K to 1473K. This study is directed at development of thermal barrrier coating(TBC) system with superior heat resistance and mechanical properties. The microstructure and fracture process of the composite were examined by SEM and AE method. The mechanical properties of 100% YSZ were nearly independent of the temperatures tested in this study. In contrast, the NiCrAlY-containing composites showed a significant decrease of the mechanical properties above 1273K, showing a ductile- brittle transition behavior up to the temperature. Furthermore, it can seen that 25% YSZ/75% NiCrAlY composite gave the highest fracure strength and fracture energy among the mixing ratio tested over the temperature range.

Development of eco-friendly concrete produced with Rice Husk Ash (RHA) based geopolymer

  • This paper reports the effect of Rice Husk Ash (RHA) in geopolymer concrete on strength, durability and microstructural properties under ambient curing at a room temperature of 25℃ and 65±5% relative humidity. Rice husk was incinerated at 800℃ in a hot air oven. and ground in a ball mill to achieve the required fineness. RHA was partially added in 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 percentages to fly ash with 10% of GGBS to produce geopolymer concrete. Test results exhibit that the substitution of RHA in geopolymer concrete resulted in reduced strength properties during initial curing. In the initial stage, workability of GPC mixes was affected by RHA particles due to the presence of dormant particles in it. It is evident from the microstructural study that the presence of RHA particles densifies the matrix reducing porosity in concrete. This is due to the presence of RHA in geopolymer concrete, which affects the ratio of silica and alumina, resulting in polycondensation reactions products. This study suggests that incorporation of rice husk ash in geopolymer concrete is the solution for effective utilization of waste materials and prevention of environmental pollution due to the dumping of industrial waste and to produce eco-friendly concrete.

A study on the heat treatment processing of 7050 aluminum alloy (7050Al 합금의 열처리공정 개발에 관한 연구)

  • The aero-industry is union industry which includes a research development type, a knowledge accumulation type and a developed country type. The aero-industry of Korea is in semi-developed type stage but departed later than that of other country such as Taiwan, Indonesia etc. Therefore, the necessity of domestic airplane material is required. This study on 7050Al extruded alloy aims to suggest an adequate heat treatment conditions of T73, T74 and T76. The results of this study show that; 1. The optimum conditions of T7x heat treatment in extruded 7050Al alloy show this; $$T73:121^{\circ}C{\times}7hr+177^{\circ}C{\times}14hr$$. $$T74:121^{\circ}C{\times}7hr+177^{\circ}C{\times}10hr$$. $$T76:121^{\circ}C{\times}7hr+163^{\circ}C{\times}21hr$$. 2. The 2nd step aging heat treatment such as T73, T74 and T76 etc. is efective in 7050Al alloy but the variation otf microstructure and mechanical property with dispersive inclusions produced for extrusion process causes some troubles. Accordingly, in order to produce a good 7050Al alloy, a careful attention is needed in manufacturing process.

  • Contemporary objectives for steel rod rolling processing are increasingly complex and often contrasting i.e. obtaining a desired product with optimum combination of properties such as strength, toughness and formability at lower cost. Low-alloy steel rods have been produced with several heat treatments for drawing and forging processes at room temperature. In order to reduce these heat treatments much of the researches concerning of high temperature mechanical behavior of steel rods have been conducted at wire rod mill of POSCO. In this present work, optimizations of rolling temperature and cooling rate for JS-SCM435 are performed to eliminate softening heat treatment(Low Temperature Annealing) for drawing process. The results from the optimization changed the microstructure of rods after rod rolling from Bainite with high tensile strength of 1000Mpa to Pearlite and Ferrite with appropriate strength of 750Mpa that is equivalent tensile strength after softening heat treatment.

Prediction of the Plastic Strain Ratio Evolution of a Dual-phase Steel (3차원 미세조직에 기반한 잔류응력 하의 이상 조직강의 소성변형률비 예측)

  • A microstructure-based finite element simulation was conducted to predict the plastic strain ratio (R-value) of a dual-phase (DP) steel. The representative volume elements (RVEs) concept was adopted for the image-based FE modeling and a 3D model was constructed using sequential 2D images. Each phase was considered with the von-Mises yield criterion and the Swift model. The Swift parameters were defined by the empirical equations based on the chemical composition. The developed model was applied to analyze the effect of residual stress on the R-value and stress distribution. In order to consider the residual stress development after cold rolling, 10 % compression was applied in the thickness direction and unloaded before the tensile stress was applied in the rolling direction. The results showed a reasonable prediction for the R-value evolution: a sharp increase at small strains was well described and a transition followed in the downward direction.   • Shaped charge(SC) ammunition is a weapon that penetrates directly the target by made jet from metal liner on impacting at a target. In SC, the liner occupies significantly important role causing an explosion and penetration of the target. The Al-Ni composite coating was deposited on copper liner in a solid state via kinetic spraying to improve the explosive force. The mechanical properties, reactivity and microstructure were investigated to confirm the possibility of kinetic sprayed Al/Ni composite coating as a reactive liner material. Reactive liner using Al/Ni composite exhibited much enhanced reactivity than pure copper liner due to Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis (SHS) reaction with significantly improved adhesive bond strength. Especially, among the Al/Ni composite coatings, AN11 (the Al versus Ni atomic percent ratio is 1:1) showed the greatest reactivity due to its widest reaction area between deposited Al and Ni.
