  • Recently TiN, TiAlN, CrN hardcoatings have adapted many industrial application such as die, mold and cutting tools because of good wear resistant and thermal stability. However, in terms of high speed process, general hard coatings have been limited by oxidation and thermal hardness drop. Especially in the case of PCB drill, high speed cutting and without lubricant process condition have not adapted these coatings until now. Therefore more recently, superhard nanocomposite coating which have superhard and good thermal stability have developed. In previous works, WC-TiAlN new nanocomposite film was investigated by cathodic arc ion plating system. Control of AI concentration, WC-TiAlN multi layer composite coating with controlled microstructure was carried out and provides additional enhancement of mechanical properties as well as oxidation resistance at elevated temperature. It is noted that microhardness ofWC-TiA1N multi layer composite coating increased up to 50 Gpa and got thermal stability about $900^{\circ}C$. In this study WC-TiAlN nanocomposite coating was deposited on PCB drill for enhancement of life time. The parameter was A1 concentration and plasma cleaning time for edge sharpness maintaining. The characteristic of WC-TiAlN film formation and wear behaviors are discussed with data from AlES, XRD, EDS and SEM analysis. Through field test, enhancement of life time for PCB drill was measured.

  • The effect of stress relief heat treatment temperature and duration time on the microstructure, residual stress and Vickers hardness of additively manufactured Ti-6Al-4V alloy using laser powder bed fusion process was clarified. As a result of stress relief heat treatment for 240 minutes at 823 K and 60 minutes or more at 873 K, residual stress was decreased less than 30 MPa without grain growth and phase transformation which causes dimensional distortion and deterioration of mechanical properties. In addition, hardness was increased with increasing heat treatment temperature and duration time. It was deduced that the refinement of acicular martensitic α' phase due to the increasing duration time of isothermal heat treatment at 773~873 K, which was not detected by XRD and phase map analysis using SEM-EBSD, probably increases the hardness.

  • Symmetric three layer composites have been prepared by freeze casting and then pressureless sintered at $l700-1800^{\circ}C$ in $N_2$ gas atmosphere. The relative sintered density of multilayer composites having microstructural characteristics of later intermediate-stage densification increased with sintering temperature and reached about 95% theoretical value at $1800^{\circ}C$. Although the indentation strength of the multilayer composites was generally reduced with increasing Vickers indentation load up to 294N, the damage resistance of multilayer composites was superior compared to monolithic layer 95AL/5SN material. The three-point bend strength of the layered materials remained at the values 266-298 MPa after indentation with a load of 49N, while that of the monolithic 95AL/5SN material was 219 MPa. The fracture toughness of the multilayer material was $5.4-6.6\;MPa\;m^{1/2}$.

  • The structural control of Al-Si alloy, which was not studied among various electromagnetic processing of materials, was considered applying the alternating current and direct current magnetic flux density. The main aim of the present study is to investigate the effects of electromagnetic vibration on the macro and microstructure of Al-Si alloy in order to develop a new process of structural control in Al-Si alloy. When the electromagnetic vibration is conducted for changing the shape of primary aluminum, at low frequency(>60Hz), the shape of dendrite is changed speroidal shape. When the electromagnetic vibration is conducted for changing the shape of eutectic silicon, the fact that a morphological change of the eutectic silicon from coarse platelet flakes to fine fiber shape is observed and the improvement of the mechanical properties is achieved with EMV (Electro Magnetic Vibration) process at high frequency(>500Hz).

  • This study has been performed to investigate into some effects of various amounts of $CO_2$ and CO gas added to the $50%NH_3-N_2$ based gas atmosphere on microstructure, hardness, chemical analysis and residual stress in the compound and diffusion layer of AISI H13 treated by gaseous nitrocarburising process. The compound layer formed in the surface is composed of mainly ${\varepsilon}-Fe_3$(N,C) and small amount of ${\gamma}^{\prime}-Fe_4N$ and cementite. The maximum hardness value obtainable from H13 steel is shown to be 1200 Hv and the effecvtive hardening depth increases with increasing CO content from 1% to 4%. In the case of CO content over 4%, however, it decreases with increasing CO content. The composition profiles of nitrogen and carbon are found to be within the ${\varepsilon}$-phase field located above the ${\varepsilon}+{\gamma}^{\prime}$ phase field in the Fe-N-C diagram. It is shown that the maximum value of compressive residual stress of H13 steel treated in atmospheres of $50%NH_3-(2,4)%CO_2-N_2-CO$ gas mixture is $48kg/mm^2$ and the depth to which residual stress is in Compressive state is $90{\mu}m$ for the atmosphere $50%NH_3-45%N_2-4%CO_2-1%CO$ gas mixture. It is consequently important to control the maximum value and size of compressive residual stress region in order to obtain desirable mechanical properties.

  • Synthesis of $\beta$-Sialon powder was attempted with carbothermal reduction of porous glass. The porous glass was prepared by heat and hydrothermal treatments of 9.32 Li2O.46.5B2O3.37.2SiO2.6.98Al2O3 glass. Carbon pyrolyzed from propane gas was deposited on the porous glass, thereafter activated carbon was added as reducing agents. The synthesized $\beta$-Sialon powder was pressureless sintered at 175$0^{\circ}C$ for 1hr in N2 atmosphere. The characterization of the $\beta$-Sialon powder was performed with XRD, BET, SEM and particle size analysis. The sinterability and mechanical properties of the sintered bodies were investigated in terms of bulk density, M.O.R., fracture toughness, morphology of microstructure and etc. The reduction effect of deposited carbon was better than that of activated carbon mechanically added. The formation of SiC was precominant over that of Si2ON2 and $\beta$-Sialon owing to low partial pressure of N2 inside the pore, wehreas on the surface of porous glass the formation of Si2ON2 and $\beta$-Sialon were predominant. Thereafter, SiC reduced unreacted glass to be $\beta$-Sialon. Single phase of $\beta$-Sialon(Z=1.92) was obtained from PGA porous glass having the largest pore radius by the simultaneous reduction and nitridation method at 145$0^{\circ}C$ for 5hrs. The bulk density, M.O.R., and KIC of the sitered body are 3.17g/cc, 434.4MPa and 4.1MPa.m1/2, respectively.

  • Ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) is produced using high amount of cementitious materials, very low water/cementitious materials ratio, fine-sized fillers, and steel fibers. Due to the dense microstructure of UHPC, it possesses very high strength, elasticity, and durability. Besides that, the UHPC exhibits high ductility and fracture toughness due to presence of fibers in its matrix. While the high ductility of UHPC allows it to undergo high strain/deflection before failure, the high fracture toughness of UHPC greatly enhances its capacity to absorb impact energy without allowing the formation of severe cracking or penetration by the impactor. These advantages with UHPC make it a suitable material for construction of the structural members subjected to special loading conditions. In this research work, the UHPC mixtures having three different dosages of steel fibers (2%, 4% and 6% by weight corresponding to 0.67%, 1.33% and 2% by volume) were characterized in terms of their mechanical properties including facture toughness, before using these concrete mixtures for casting the slab specimens, which were tested under high-energy impact loading with the help of a drop-weight impact test setup. The effect of fiber content on the impact energy absorption capacity and central deflection of the slab specimens were investigated and the equations correlating fiber content with the energy absorption capacity and central deflection were obtained with high degrees of fit. Finite element modeling (FEM) was performed to simulate the behavior of the slabs under impact loading. The FEM results were found to be in good agreement with their corresponding experimentally generated results.

  • The indentation technique has been one of the most commonly used techniques for the measurement of the mechanical properties of materials due to its experimental ease and speed. Recently, the scope of indentation has been enlarged down to the nanometer range through the development of instrumentations capable of continuously measuring load and displacement. In addition to testing hardness, the elastic modulus of submicron area could be measured from an indentation load-displacement (P-h) curve. In this study, the hardness values of the constituent phases in Ti($C_{0.7}N_{0.3}$)-NbC-Ni cermets were evaluated by nanoindentation. SEM observation of the indented surface was indispensable in order to separate the hardness of each constituent phase since the Ti($C_{0.7}N_{0.3}$)-based cermets have relatively inhomogeneous microstructure. The measured values of hardness using nanoindentation were ${\sim}20$ GPa for hard phase and ${\sim}10$ GPa for binder phase. The effect of NbC addition on hardness was not obvious in this work.

  • The investigation is to modify the mechanical and chemical properties of Mg alloys using a combination of rapid solidification and surface treatment. As the first approach, $Mg_{95}Zn_{4.3}Y_{0.7}$ was gas atomized and pressure sintered by spark plasma sintering process (SPS), showing much finer microstructure and higher strength than the alloys as cast. Further modification was performed by treating the surface of PM Mg specimen using Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) process. During the PEO processing, MgO layer was initiated to form on the surface of Mg powder compacts, and the thickness and the density of MgO layer were varied with the reaction time. The thickening rate became low with the reaction time due to the limited diffusion rate of Mg ions. The surface morphology, corrosion behavior and wear resistance were also discussed.

  • $TiB_2$-TiN double-layer coating have been prepared by ion beam enhanced deposition. AES, XRD, TEM and HRTEM were employed to characterize the $TiB_2$ layer. The microhardness of the coatings was evaluated by an ultra low-load microhardness indenter system, and the tribological behavior was examined by a ball-on-disc tribology wear tester. It was found that in a single titanium diboride layer, the composition is uniform along the depth of the film, and it is mainly composed of nanocrystalline $TiB_2$ with hexagonal structure, which resulted from the ion bombardment during the film growth. The hardness of the $TiB_2$ films increases with increasing ion energy, and approaches a maximum value of the $TiB_2$ films increases with increasing ion energy, and approaches a maximum value of 39 Gpa at ion energy of 85 keV. The tribological property of the TiB2 films is also improved by higher energy of 85keV. The tribological property of the $TiB_2$ films is also improved by higher energy ion beam bombardment. There is no major disparity in the mechanical properties of double-layer $TiB_2$/TiN coatings and TiN/$TiB_2$ coatings. Both show an improved wear resistance compared with single-layer $TiB_2$ films. The adhesion of double-layer coatings is also superior to that of single-layer films.
