  • Radiation characteristics of microstrip patch antennas integrated with mushroom-like EBG structures in length direction, width direction and all directions are analyzed. Patch antennas integrated with EBG structures in length direction shows the best radiation characteristics among the cases integrated in three directions. The case for the feed point of a patch antenna located in the center of both EBG structures integrated with a patch antenna shows better symmetric E-plane radiation pattern, higher forward radiation intensity, and lower backward radiation intensity compared to the case for the center of a patch antenna located in the center of both EBG structures. The variation of the radiation characteristics of patch antennas integrated with EBG structures more than 4 periods versus number of periods of EBG structures integrated is very small.

  • This paper discusses the design and implementation of parabola, lens, and $32{\times}8$ rectangular microstrip patch array antennas at 77GHz for vehicular radar applications. The parabola size was $7{\times}10$ cm and the f/D was 0.263. Open waveguide(WR-12) was utilized as the feed antenna. Two types of lens antennas with f/D=0.5 were investigated ; one was a plano-convex and the other was a double-convex. A patch array antenna was designed using a transmission line model and experimented. Comparing the theoretical values with the measured ones for four antennas, the results were agreed well in 3 dB BW and radiation patterns, while the gain of the patch array antenna was degraded as much as -25 dB due to the feed network and microstrip-to-coax-to-waveguide transition losses.

  • An efficient technique for the analysis of a general class of microstrip structures with a substrate is applied in this paper using newly-derived closed-form spatial domain Green's functions employed in conjunction with the Method of Moments(MoM). The computed current distributions on the microstrip structures are used to determine the scattering parameters of microstrip discontinuties and the input impedances of microstrip patch antennas. It is shown that the use of the closed-form Green's functions in the context of the MoM provides a computational advantage in terms of the CPU time by almost two orders of magnitude over the conventional spectral domain approach employing the transformed version of the Green's functions.

  • In this study, the antenna was proposed for the omni-directional characteristic in horizontal plane. Therefore we proposed $1{\times}4$ microstrip patch array on cylindrical surface for studying microstrip patch antennas. This antenna is designed for 2.45GHz ISM band and applications. This antenna can be applied to the base station of wireless microphone and access point of wireless LAN. The length and width of the patch antenna and the width of the feed line were calculated by using the theory of microstrip patch antenna, by using the both the 2.5D and 3D EM simulators the optimized antenna characteristics are obtained. From result of measured, antenna's impedance of coaxial waveguide port was 51.915-j3.688 ${\Omega}$, the return loss was -31dB and VSWR was 1.081.

  • In this paper, we described the characterization of High-Tc Superconducting(HTS) microstrip antenna using non-radiating edge feeding technique and reported the microwave properties of HTS antennas with temperature. To do this, we prepared the $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ superconducting thin film on MgO substrate using pulse-laser deposition techniques. The HTS microstrip antenna using non-radiating feeding technique was fabricated using chemical wet-etching. Then it was compared with identical antenna patterned with evaporated gold. The diverse measured results have been reported in terms of the input impedance, resonant frequency and return loss. In additional, at around the critical temperature, the effect of kinetic inductance which affect the resonant characteristic of the HTS microstrip antenna was reported.

  • A novel phased array antenna system for space-borne polarimetric SAR is proposed and completed in this paper. The antenna system assures polarimetric and multi-mode capability of SAR. It has broadband, high polarization isolation and high port to port isolation. The antenna system is composed of broadband polarimetric microstrip antenna, T/R modules and multifunction beam controller nit. The polarimetric microstrip antenna has more than 100MHz bandwidth at L-band with -30dB polarization isolation and high port to port isolation. The microstrip element and T/R module's structure and characteristics, the subarray's performances measuring results are presented in detail in this paper. A design scheme on beam controller of the phased array antenna is also proposed and completed, which is based on Digital Signal Processing (DSP) chip -TMS320F206. This beam controller unit has small size and high reliability compared with general beam controller. In addition, the multifunction beam controller unit can acquire and then send the T/R module's working states to detection system in real time.

  • This paper describes beam-tilting characteristics of horizontally polarized EMCD (electromagnetically coupled dipole) array antennas. The result of one element radiator is used for array elements designs and is evaluated its characteristics. Theoretical frequency characteristics and radiation pattern of the horizontally polarized EMCD array antennas analyzed by FDTD method agree well with the measured results of the practically fabricated way antennas. The measured main beam tilt ang1e and 3 dB beam width of the fabricated 20-element array antennas are 47$^{\circ}$and about $\pm$7.5$^{\circ}$, respectively. A good radiation pattern and beam tilting characteristics are observed in experiments.

  • Mutual coupling between antenna elements of a linear microstrip patch antenna array positioned along the H-plane including the effect of edge reflections is investigated. Simple formulas are presented for the estimation of the grounded dielectric substrate size with minimum mutual coupling. The substrate sizes calculated by these formulas are in good agreement with those obtained by the full-wave simulation and experimental measurement. The substrate size with minimum mutual coupling is a function of the effective dielectric constant for surface waves and the distance between the antenna centers. The substrate size with minimum mutual coupling decreases as the effective dielectric constant for surface waves on a finite grounded dielectric substrate increases.

  • A novel planar polarization-agile microstrip subarray is proposed and its performance assessed by a thorough numerical investigation. The subarray consists of five square patches with a central element, directly coupled to a pair of microstrip feed lines by a cross-shaped aperture, which spreads the power outwards to the other patches through a network of suitable connections. By properly exciting the antenna at its input ports, any kind of polarization of the radiated field can be accomplished with fairly low cross-polarization levels. Moreover, since only two feed lines are required to drive the whole subarray, polarization agility is simply and attractively achieved by a single phase-shift circuit. The design concept is described and the results of the analyses and simulations performed by two completely independent full-wave approaches are presented and discussed.

  • A perfect matching is the desire of antenna designers. In this paper, we improve the matching of antenna designing. In general, the efficiency of antennas has many improvements. In this paper, we choose to extend matching by adding the slots in the basic microstrip-fed rectangular slot antenna. We called it as "parasitic slots". The dominant characteristic of this addition is double efficient improvement matching and other characteristics of antenna are similar. It means that the microstrip-fed rectangular slot antenna with parasitic slots has all characteristics as same as the microstrip-fed rectangular slot antenna without parasitic slots. The antenna with parasitic slots has better matching better than the antenna without parasitic slots.
