To investigate the efficiency of a fibrous collagen membrane(FCM) composed of bovine skin type I atelocollagen as a carrier for BMP, partially purified bovine BMP/FCM($0.3mg/10{\times}5{\times}1mm$) composites were implanted into the dorsal subcutaneous tissue of rats. FCM alone was also implanted as a control. The implants were harvested at 1, 2, 3, and 10 weeks after implantation, then prepared for routine light microscopic observation. The FCM alone did not induce osteogenesis and revealed no specific foreign body reaction nor was there any definite resorptive evidence for 10 weeks after implantation, while the BMP/FCM composites induced favorable bone formation in a process that resembled an endochondral and direct ossification mode. At 10 weeks, the well formed bone confined to embedded collagen fibers revealed hematopoietic marrow between bony trabeculae without evidence of resorptive or degenerative changes . These findings support the suggestion that BMP may induce undifferentiated mesenchymal cells into either chondroblasts or osteoblasts or both independantly according to the chemico- physical characteristics of the carrier, which develops the endochondral and/or direct bone formation process, and suggest that the FCM may be a favorable carrier for BMP.
Phase behavior and spinodal phase separation kinetics in binary blends of a random copolymer of vinylidene fluoride and trifluoroethylene (75/25) [P(VDF/TrFE)] and poly(l,4-butylene adipate) (PBA) have been investigated by means of optical microscopic observation and time-resolved light scattering. The blends exhibited a typical lower critical solution temperature (LCST)∼${34}^{\circ}C$ above the melting temperature of the P(VDF/TrFE) crystals over the entire blend composition range. P(VDF/TrFE) and PBA were totally miscible in the temperature gap between the melting point of P(VDF/TrFE) and the LCST. Temperature jump experiments of the 3/7 P(VDF/TrFE)/PBA blend were carried out on a light-scattering apparatus from a single-phase melt state (${180}^{\circ}C$) to a two-phase region (205∼${215}^{\circ}C$). Since the late stage of spinodal decomposition (SD) is prevalent in the 3/7 blend, SD was analyzed using a power law scheme. Self-similarity was preserved well in the late stage of SD in the 3/7 blend.
Experiment was conducted to study the effect of sources of dietary fiber on the intestinal morphology of geese. Sixty white Roman geese of two-week-old were divided randomly into six groups and were fed with isoenergetic and isonitrogenous diets which contain alfalfa meal, barley hull, rice hull, purified cellulose, lignin, or pectin as the major dietary source of fiber. Different sources of dietary fiber significantly influenced the villi height and the crypt depth in the duodenum, and the villi height and the muscle layer thickness in the ileum (p < 0.05). The duodenal villus in the geese that fed diets with alfalfa meal, rice hull or pectin supplemented were significantly longest ($968.5{\mu}m$), whereas the lignin group was significantly shortest villus and deepest crypt depth (p < 0.05). The thicknesses of the ileal and caecal muscle layer were significantly thicker in the geese fed with cellulose supplemented diets than in those fed with the other treatment diets. The caecum of the barley bran fed geese possessed significantly longest villi and the most thick muscle layers (p < 0.05). From scanning electronic microscopic observation, the leafy and plate-like in the duodenal villi morphology of geese represented a more effective nutrient absorption in the small intestine. The morphology of ileal villi in geese was similar from herbivorous rabbit and from the African Green monkey.

An high frequency induction hardening technology of vehicle body press-formed of thin sheet steel has been developed to increase the strength of vehicle body parts locally by high frequency induction heating, thereby eliminating the need for reinforcements. And this technique for increasing the tensile strength of sheet steel was practically applied to the front floor cross member and center pillar reinforcement of a passenger car. The side impact behavior has been investigated when induction hardening technology is applied to the conventional low-carbon steel and weight reduction of an automotive body is expected. In this paper, basic experiments were performed for the hat-shaped specimen under high frequency induction heating process. Martensitic transformation was found in the heating zone through microscopic observation which showed higher hardness. In addition, the hardness and strength of the center-pillar specimen made of boron steel increased remarkably by high frequency induction heating.
From five years' previous work, the fungal isolates of Scopulariopsis were reported to be important flora at the late stage of meju fermentation. Mainly, the white or pale brown powders of spore mass of these fungi were observed on the surfaces of rectangular mejus, and to be an important sign for well-done Korean traditional home - made mejus. Out of the five isolates previously collected and stored, two kinds of Scopulariopsis isolates were identified as S. brevicauli and S. fusca. The microscopic differences between two were found to be branching patterns of annellophore and ornamentations of spore wall (warty and smooth). However, the intermediate form between two ornamentations of spore wall were also observed in our isolates. This observation was consistent with other result made from the protein electrophoresis. The isolates of Scopulariopsis were considered to be similar or superior to those of Aspergillus species, as compared with production of protease and amylase related enzymes. Thus, these isolates were speculated to be important fungi in Korean traditional home - made meju fermentation and also in production of protease and amylase.
An azoinitiator linked to an epoxy oligomer, which could easily diffuse into the organoclay gallery and swell it, was used as an initiator to enhance the delamination of an organoclay, Cloisite 25A, in a matrix of styrenic polymers, poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) and polystyrene, during the preparation of a nanocomposite via an in-situ polymerization method. X-ray diffraction results and transmission electron microscopic observation of the morphology showed that the epoxy segment enhanced not only the delamination but also the extrication of ammonium cations from the organoclay gallery into the polymer matrix. The latter phenomenon induced the structural change of the alkyl group of ammonium cations in the gallery from a bilayer to monolayer structure, and also decreased the glass-rubber transition temperature as measured by a differential scanning calorimeter and dynamic mechanical analyzer.

The effects of pine needle extracts on lipid contents and antioxidative enzyme activities in liver of rat were evaluated. Thirty male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into five groups and fed high fat diets for four weeks. Each group was administered with pine needle extract in the following doses: control, water ; WE-3, hot water extract(3% PN) ; WE-6, hot water extract(6% PN) ; AE-3, acetone extract(3% PN) ; AE-6, acetone extract(6% PN). The results obtained from the experiment were as follows: GOT activities were not significantly different among experimental groups but GPT activities were significantly low in the experimental groups compared to the control group. Liver superoxide dismutase(SOD) activity of pine needle extract administered groups was higher than that of control group. Catalase activities of liver had a similar tendency to SOD activities, but were not significantly different among the groups. Liver TBARS of WE-3 WE and AE-6 groups were slightly lower than those of other groups. Microscopic observation of liver tissue revealed that pine needle extracts increased cellular swelling, which was markedly increased in WE-6 group compared with control group.
Background: Telbivudine is a nucleoside analogue used for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B, but it often develops mitochondrial toxicity leading to symptomatic myopathy. In this study, three patients with telbivudine induced myopathy were enrolled in order to investigate the nature and pathogenesis of mitochondrial toxicity caused by long-term use of telbivudine. Methods: Clinical features, laboratory findings, muscle pathology, and quantitation of mitochondrial DNA were studied in three patients. Results: Patients presented with progressive muscle weakness with high serum creatine kinase levels. Light microscopic findings of muscle pathology showed ragged red fibers that reacted strongly with succinate dehydrogenase stain, but negative for cytochrome c oxidase activities. Electron microscopy revealed abnormal mitochondrial accumulation with rod shaped inclusions. The quantitative peroxidase chain reaction showed a depletion of mitochondrial DNA in skeletal muscle of the patients. Conclusions: Nucleoside analogues including telbivudine are potent inhibitors of viral DNA polymerases. However, they are not specific for viral DNA and can disturb mitochondrial replication at the same time. All nucleotide analogues should be used with close clinical observation in order to avoid development of mitochondrial myopathy.
The biochemical characteristics of Astradix -P, isolated from Astragalus membranaceus Bunge as yeaststatic substance, were reported on a previous paper. And on this report, some relation to the nitrogen metabolism of yeast was studied. Inorganic or organic source of nitrogen easily uptaking yeast did not show any antagonistic action to the inhibitory action of Astradix -P on the yeast growth. Especially an organic nitrogen source, arginine, histidine and lysine, classified to basic amino acid, was reacted as an antagonistic substance to the sample. But, ornithine, a basic amino acid, did not show any antagonistic action to the sample. In the mixed media containing neutral and acidic amino acids as a nitrogen source, yeast growth was inhibited strongly. If the basic amino acid was added to the same mixed media, the yeast growth was not inhibited by Astradix-P therefore, the antagonistic action of basic amino acid to the Astradix-p was readily observed. The yeast static action of Astradix-P was partially related to the isoelectric point of amino acid as a nitrogen source. Yeast cells which propagated under the media containing growth inhibitor, Astradix -p, did not bring any remarkable denaturation of cell structure by electro-microscopic observation.
Electron microscopic studies were carried out to investigate the fine structure of ommatidia of the compound eyes in Meimuna mongolica D. The crystalline cone appears round, and is composed of four double-membraned cone cells and surrounded by pigment cells having many pigment granules. The rhabdom is a closed type, and is composed of four rhabdomeres Its cross section reveals lamellated microvilli which are oriented in four different directions suggesting that these represent four photoreceptive sites. The microvilli, in a cross sectional view, are hexagonal in shape with a central axis inside. There are usually eight retinular cells arranged radially from the rhabdom, but in some retinular layers seven or nine retinular cells could be observed. The cytoplasm of each retinular cell is interconnected with that of microvilli of the rhabdomere, but the appearance of this interconnection varies depending on the number of retinular cells.'The retinlilar cells neighboring the microvilli seem to have well-developed perirhabdomal vacuoles and mitochondria as well as pigment granules surrounding these vacuoles.
