  • A novel fabrication of the patterned surfaces in the polymer films was demonstrated by using the self-organizing character of the block copolymers of polystyrene-b-oligothiophenes and polystyrene-b-aromatic amide dendron. Hexagonally arranged open pores with a micrometer-size were spontaneously formed by casting the polymer solutions under a moist air flow. The amphiphilic character of the block copolymers played the crucial role as a surfactant to stabilize the inverse emulsion of water in the organic solvent, and subsequently the aggregated structure of the hydrophilic oligothiophene or aromatic amide dendron segments remained on the interiors of the micropores. The chemical composition on the top of the surface of the microporous films was characterized by energy-filtering transmission electron microscopy (EFTEM) or a time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometer (ToF-SIMS). The characterizations clearly indicated that the patterned surfaces in the self-organized block copolymer films with the hexagonally ordered microporous structures were fabricated in a single step.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to histomorphometrically evaluate the osteoconductivity of a new biphasic calcium phosphate ceramics with fully interconnected microporous structure. Material and Methods: Osseous defects created in the rabbit calvaria were filled with four different bone graft substitutes. Experimental sites were filled with a new fully interconnected microporous biphasic calcium phosphate with(BCP-2) or without(BCP-1) internal macropore of $4400\;{\mu}m$ in diameter. MBCP(Biomatlante, France) and Bio-Oss(Geistlich Pharma, Switzerland) were used as controls in this study. Histomorphometric evaluation was performed at 4 and 8 weeks after surgery. Result: In histologic evaluation, new bone formation and direct bony contact with the graft particles were observed in all four groups. At 4 weeks, BCP-1(15.5%) and BCP-2(15.5%) groups showed greater amount of newly formed mineralized bone area(NB%) compared to BO(11.4%) and MBCP(10.3%) groups. The amounts of NB% at 8 weeks were greater than those of 4 weeks in all four groups, but there was no statistically significant differences in NB% between the groups. Conclusion: These results indicate that new bone substitutes, BCP with interconnected microporous structure and with or without internal macroporous structures, have the osteoconductivity comparable to those of commercially available bone substitutes, MBCP and Bio-Oss.

  • A review is presented for various gas transport mechanisms through microporous membranes of both polymeric and inorganic materials. Different transport modes manifest depending on the pore size and the flow regime, which is a function of pressure, temperature, and the interaction between gas molecules and the pore walls. For microporous membranes whose pores are small and the internal surface area huge, the surface diffusion becomes a significant factor. If the pores become even smaller, then the transport mechanism will be more of an activated diffusion type. When conditions are right capillary condensation will take place to create an enormous capillary pressure gradient, which will greatly enhance the permeation flux. At the same time the capillary condensate of the heavier component may block the membrane pores denying the passage of the lighter gas molecules. All of these phenomena will influence the separation of mixtures.

  • Coloured wastewater is released as a direct result of the production of dyes as well as from various other chemical industries. Many dyes and their breakdown products may be toxic for living organisms. Activated carbon is one of the best materials for removal of dyes from aqueous solutions. The present study describes the adsorption behaviour of methylene blue dye on three microporous activated carbons, where two samples (AC-1 and AC-2) were prepared by a polymer blend technique and the other is a microporous activated carbon (ARY-3) sample from viscose rayon yarn prepared by chemical-physical activation. The effects of contact time and activated carbon dosage on decolourisation capacity have been studied. The results show that activated carbon having mixed microporosity and mesoporosity show tremendous decolourisation capacity for methylene blue. In addition, the activated carbon in the powder form prepared by the polymer blend technique shows better decolourisation capacity for methylene blue than the activated rayon yarn sample.

  • A series of microporous PVDF membranes were prepared by isothermal immersionprecipitation of PVDF/TEP casting dopes in both soft and harsh coagulation baths. Morphologies of the membranes' top surfaces were found to depend strongly on the bath strength, which could be controlled by the TEP content in the bath. By changing the bath gradually from pure water to 70% TEP, the top surface evolved from a dense skin-like (asymmetric) to a totally open porous morphology (symmetric). The latter structure could similarly be obtained by precipitation of the same dope in an alcoholic bath, e.g., 1-butanol. Membrane distillation processes to desalt sodium chloride aqueous solutions were conducted using various prepared membranes and two commercial microporous membranes, PTFE (Toyo, Japan, code: J020A330R) and PVDF (GE, USA, code: YMJWSP3001). The permeation fluxes were compared and correlated with the morphologies of the tested membranes.

  • Mesoporous activated carbon fiber (ACF) was prepared from phenolic resin containing a small amount (0.1 wt %) of organic nickel complex through carbonization and steam activation. Microporous ACF as reference sample was also prepared from phenolic resin without agent. In both cases of the mesoporous ACFs and the microporous ACFs, the electric double layer capacitance of the nonaqueous electrolyte (0.5 M $TEABF_4$/PC or 1.0 M $LiClO_4$/PC) was not proportional to the BET specific surface area. This is owing to the low permeability of nonaqueous electrolyte or the low mobility of ion in narrow micropores. However, the mesoporous ACF showed higher double layer capacitance than the microporous (normal) ACF. This result suggests that the presence of many mesopores promotes the formation of effective double layer or the transfer of ion in the micropore.

  • Breathable waterproof PET fabrics were prepared by the UV coating of UV-curable polyurethaneacrylate(PUA) formulation mixed with polyethyleneglycol(PEG) as a water soluble pore former. The dispersed PEG in the UV-cured coating was extracted by warm water, which can generate individual circular pores uniformly distributed all over the coating instead of pore channels. Accordingly the moisture permeability of the microporously coated fabrics increased substantially with increasing PEG addition without significant reduction of hydrostatic pressure. Also the silicone diacrylate addition in the formulation was beneficial in increasing the hydrostatic pressure. The UV-based microporous coating can be an alternative to conventional thermal curing of solventborne polyurethane coating owing to the enhanced environment friendliness and energy saving.
