TiCN thin films were deposited on tool steels at $510^{\circ}C$ by PECVD from a $TiCl_4+N_2+CH_4+H_2+Ar$ gaseous mixture. The microstructures and preferred orientation were investigated. The micro-scratch tests were performed using a system equipped with an acoustic emission sensor. Critical loads were determined to evaluate the adhesion of TiCN to substrate. The influences of the microstructures of substrates, double layered coatings, and coatings after nitriding(duplex coating) were investigated. The experimental results showed that the microstructures of substrates and double layered coating did not affect the critical loads considerably. By the duplex coating, critical loads were not always increased. In some cases, duplex coatings decreased critical loads significantly despite of absence of black layer. In this study, we tried to relate the results of scratch test to the residual stress analysis. Nitriding before the coating reduces the tensile residual stress in the film, which gives rise to low critical load in scratch test.
The presence of water inside concrete structures is an essential condition for the deterioration of the structures. The free water in the concrete pores and micro-cracks is the culprit for the durability related problems, such as alkali-aggregate reaction, carbonation, freeze-thaw damage, and corrosion of steel reinforcement. To ensure the integrity and safe operation of the concrete structures, it is very important to monitor water seepage inside the concrete. This paper presents the experimental investigation of water seepage monitoring in a concrete slab using piezoelectric-based smart aggregates. In the experimental setup, an $800mm{\times}800mm{\times}100mm$ concrete slab was fabricated with 15 SAs distributed inside the slab. The water seepage process was monitored through interrogating the SA pairs. In each SA pair, one SA was used as actuator to emit harmonic sine wave, and the other was used as sensor to receive the transmitted stress wave. The amplitudes of the received signals were able to indicate the water seepage process inside the concrete slab.
Si PIN diodes are subject to be damaged from the exposure of fast neutron by displacement of Si lattice structure. The defects are effective recombination centers for carriers which migrate through the base region of the PIN diode when forward voltage is applied. It causes an increase in current and a decrease in resistivity of the diode. This paper presents the development of a neutron sensor based on displacement damage effect. PIN diodes having various structures were made by micro-fabrication process, and neutron beam test was performed to identify neutron damage effect to the diode. From a result of the test, it was shown that the forward voltage drop of the diode, at a constant current, has good linearity for neutron dosage. Also it was found that the newton dosage can be measured by the pin diode neutron dosimeter with constant current power.

ZigBee is the emerging industrial standard for ad hoc networks based on IEEE 802.15.4. It is used for low data rate and low power wireless network applications. Expected applications of ZigBee include wireless sensor networks for remote monitoring, home control, and industrial automation. Since one of the most important design goals of ZigBee is to reduce the installation and running costs, the ZigBee stack is embedded in the cheap and small micro-controller unit. The hierarchical routing algorithm is used for ZigBee end devices which have very limited resources. Using the block addressing scheme, end devices can send data to the destination without a routing table. However, hierarchical routing has the problem that the packets follow the tree hierarchy to the destination even if the destination is located nearby. In this paper, we propose a scheme to improve the hierarchical routing algorithm in ZigBee networks by employing the neighbor table that is originally used together with the routing table. We suggest selecting the neighbor node that has the minimum remaining hops to the destination as the next hop node. Simulation result shows that the proposed scheme saves more than 30% of the hop counts compared with the original hierarchical routing.

OBD-II regulations are already effective in many countries. The California Air Resources Board(CARB) first issued regulations in 1985 for the 1988 model year, known as OBD-I, and required the vehicle's engine management computer to warn the driver by means of a dash-mounted light if a malfunction occurred in either the oxygen sensor, the exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) valve or the evaporative emission system purge solenoid, and to store information on troubles that have no recurrent characteristics. This paper presents two methods of wireless monitoring OBD signal, which is one of the ECU output for self diagnostic measurement. RF module is used to monitor ECU's Self diagnostic signal remotely. Two kinds of measurement systems which are based on micro-controller(80C196KC) for portable detection and PC for sever are considered for receiving the RF signal. Therefore, possibility of real-time monitoring of ECU's self diagnostic signal remotely is verified on this paper.

Global effort has resulted in tremendous progress with energy harvesters that extract mechanical energy from ambient sources, convert it to electrical energy, and use it for systems such as wrist watches, mobile electronic devices, wireless sensor nodes, health monitoring, and biosensors. However, harvesting a single energy source only still pauses a great challenge in driving sustainable and maintenance-free monitoring and sensing devices. Over the last few years, research on high-performance mechanical energy harvesters at the micro and nanoscale has been directed toward the development of hybrid devices that either aim to harvest mechanical energy in addition to other types of energies simultaneously or to exploit multiple mechanisms to more effectively harvest mechanical energy. Herein, we appraise the rational designs for multiple energy harvesting, specifically state-of-the-art hybrid mechanical energy harvesters that employ multiple piezoelectric and triboelectric mechanisms to efficiently harvest mechanical energy. We identify the critical material parameters and device design criteria that lead to high-performance hybrid mechanical energy harvesters. Finally, we address the future perspectives and remaining challenges in the field.

In this work, a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) was demonstrated for 10-GHz band motion detecting sensors. The VCO MMIC was fabricated using a $2-{\mu}m$ InGap/GaAs HBT process, and the tuning of the oscillation frequency is achieved by changing the internal capacitance in the HBT, instead of using extra varactor diodes. The implemented VCO MMIC has a micro size of $500{\mu}m{\times}500{\mu}m$, and demonstrates the value of inserting the VCO into a single chip transceiver. The experimental results showed that the frequency tuning characteristic was above 30 MHz, with the excellent output flatness characteristic of ${\pm}0.2dBm$ over the tuning bandwidth. And, the VCO MMIC exhibited a phase noise characteristic of -92.64 dBc/Hz and -118.28 dBc/Hz at the 100 kHz and 1 MHz offset frequencies from the carrier, respectively. The measured values were consistent with the design values, and exhibited good performance.
In this study, 2 wt% Cr-doped Ni thin films were deposited using DC sputtering on a bare Si substrate using a 4 inch target at room temperature. In order to obtain ultrathin films from Cr-doped Ni thin films with high electrical properties and uniform surface, the micro-structure and electrical properties were investigated as a function of deposition time. For all deposition times, the Cr-doped Ni thin films had low average resistivity and small surface roughness. However, the resistivity of the Cr-doped Ni thin films at various ranges showed large differences for deposition times below 90 s. From the results, 120 s is considered as the appropriate deposition time for Cr-doped Ni thin films to obtain the lowest resistivity, a low surface roughness, and a small difference of resistivity. The Cr-doped Ni thin films are prospective materials for microdevices as ultrathin film electrodes.
High-sensitivity signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) microphones are essentially required for a broad range of automatic speech recognition applications. Piezoelectric microphones have several advantages compared to conventional capacitor microphones including high stiffness and high SNR. In this study, we designed a new piezoelectric membrane structure by using the finite elements method (FEM) and an optimization technique to improve the sensitivity of the transducer, which has a high-quality AlN piezoelectric thin film. The simulation demonstrated that the sensitivity critically depends on the inner radius of the top electrode, the outer radius of the membrane, and the thickness of the piezoelectric film in the microphone. The optimized piezoelectric transducer structure showed a much higher sensitivity than that of the conventional piezoelectric transducer structure. This study provides a visible path to realize micro-scale high-sensitivity piezoelectric microphones that have a simple manufacturing process, wide range of frequency and low DC bias voltage.
