  • This paper is concerned with manufacturing technology of thin foil tensile specimen using CIP(Cold Isostatic Press) and measurement of precision mechanical properties using micro tensile testing. We can get a burr free micro metallic thin foil specimen using this technology. For testing mechanical property of this micro thin foil, we use a nano scale material testing machine that was developed by KITECH. In this paper, micro tensile specimens of nickel and copper thin foil are fabricated with CIP and precision mechanical properties of these materials could be measured. We will expect precision mechanical property of micro/nano material and component.

  • Invar is a compound metal of Fe-Ni system and contain 36% Ni. The most distinction characteristic of Invar is the coefficient of thermal expansion is 1.0 10$^{-6}$ /$^{\circ}C$. That is a tenth of general steel material. This low thermal expansion characteristic of Invar is applied to the missile, aircraft, monitor CRT and frontier display's shadow mask such as FED and OLED. The usage of the Invar shadow mask for display is increasing due to the requirement of larger size and flatness monitor. The Invar shadow mask is machined by two ways electro-forming and laser now. However the electro-forming takes a too long time and the laser machining is accompanied with Burr. In this study, PEMM(pulse electrochemical micro machining) is conducted to machine the micro hole to the Invar and 80${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ hole was machined.

  • This This study aims to verify burr formation and to remove the burrs in micro-channel fabrication using micro-machining tools. The machining processes are combined with micro-milling and magnetic abrasive deburring for AISI316 stainless steel. Depending on the micro-milling conditions that are applied, burrs are formed around the side walls. Magnetic abrasive deburring is used to remove these burrs. AISI316 stainless steel is a nonferrous material and its magnetic flux density, which is an important parameter for efficient magnetic abrasive deburring, is low. To enhance this magnetic flux density, we design and build a magnetic array table. The effect of removing burrs is evaluated via SEM and a surface tester.

  • The study on damaged layer is necessary for machinability improvement in micro machining. The damaged layer in metal cutting is derived from plastic deformation and transformation of metal structure. The damaged layer affects micro mold life and micro machine parts. In this study, the damaged layer of micro machined surface of copper is evaluated according to various machining condition. The damaged layer structure and metallurgical characteristics are measured by optical microscope, and evaluated by cutting forces and surface roughness. The scale of this damaged layer depends on cutting process parameters and machining environments. By experimental results, depth of damaged layer was increased with increasing of cutting depth, also the damaged layer is less occurred in down-milling compared to up-milling during micro endmilling operation.

  • Micro patterns are used to maximize the performance and efficiency of the product in many industries such as energy, display, printing, biology, etc. Nowadays, the fabrication technology for micro patterns has been developed in various ways such as photolithography, laser machining, electrical discharge machining and mechanical machining. Recently, mechanical machining the size of smaller than 1 micrometer could be tried, because the technology related to the machining was developed brilliantly. This paper shows the experiments using cutting processes in order to fabricate the micro pattern. Micro patterns of the size of several micrometers were machined by the diamond tools of two different shape, the deformation and generation of burr were investigated.

  • Several types of burrs form on the edges of all machined and stamped parts. These burrs must be removed to prevent interference fits or short circuits, to improve fatigue life or to prevent injury. Despite the full or partial automation of FMC or FMS, deburring operations to obtain workpiece with fine surface quality are difficult to be automated since the occurrence and condition of burr are not constant. This study focused on developing micro-deburring technique for small electro- parts produced by press process. The successful performance was demonstrated by deburring experiment using the powder blasting.

  • Micro prism pattern is applying in order to get increase of luminance, control the light, and so forth especially in optics and display industry. Most patterns are fabricated by lithography, planning, and EDM, but they have limitations on the productivity or the unit cost of produce. However, ultra precision mold is one of the processes able to replace it, and assure high productivity required by industries. In this investigation, micro prismatic end-milling is suggested in order to fabricate the pattern effectively. Micro prism pattern having $100{\mu}m$ of pitch and height was machined on STD-11. After machining, the flank and boundary wear on micro end mill were measured and analyzed, as well as burr formation and dimensional accuracy of fabricated pattern were evaluated. Thus the optimal cutting conditions were derived.

  • The optical film for light luminance improvement of BLU that is used in LCD/LED and retro-reflective film is used as luminous sign consist of square and triangular pyramid structure pattern based on V-shape micro prism pattern. In this study, we analyzed machining characteristics of Cu-plated flat mold by shaping with diamond tool. First, cutting conditions were optimizing as V-groove machining for the experiment of micro prism structure mold machining with prism pattern shape, cutting force and roughness. Second, the micro prism structure such as square and triangular pyramid pattern were machined by cross machining method with optimizing cutting conditions. Burr and chip shape were discussed with material properties and machining method.

  • This paper discusses the feasibility of improving micro-machining accuracy by using two-dimensional(2-D) vibration cutting. Vibration cutting is generated by two piezo actuators arranged orthogonally : one is actuated by a sine curve voltage input, and the other is actuated by a phase-shifted sine curve voltage. A tool attached to the vibrator oscillates in a 2-D elliptical motion, depending on the frequencies, amplitudes, and the phase shifts of two input signals and the workpiece feedrate. Along the elliptical tool locus, cutting is done in the lower part, and non-cutting is done in the upper part. By this way a unique feature of 2-D vibration cutting, that is, air lubrication between a tool and chips, is caused. Another unique feature of 2-D vibration cutting was experimentally verified, that is, some negative thrust force occurs as the direction of chip movement on a tool rake face is reversed. Those features not only help chips flow smoothly and continuously but also reduce cutting force, which results in a higher quality machined surface. Through tool path simulations and experiments under several micro-machining conditions, the 2-D vibration cutting, compared to conventional cutting, was found to result in a great decrease in the cutting force, a much smoother surface, and much less burr.
