  • Experimental and numerical studies were carried out in order to investigate the processability and the transcriptability of the injection molding of micro structures. For this purpose, we designed a mold insert having micro rib patterns on a relatively thick base part. Mold insert has a base of 2mm thickness, and has nine micro ribs on that base plate. Width and height of the rib are $300{\mu}m\;and\;1200{\mu}m$, respectively. We found a phenomenon similar to 'race tracking', due to 'hesitation' in the micro ribs. As the melt flows, it starts to cool down and melt front located in the ribs near the gate cannot penetrate further because the flow resistance is large in that almost frozen portion. When the base is totally filled, the melt front away from the gate is not frozen yet. Therefore, it flows back to the gate direction through the ribs. Consequently, transcriptability of the rib far from the gate is better. We also verified this phenomenon via numerical simulation. We further investigated the effects of processing conditions, such as flow rate, packing time, packing pressure, wall temperature and melt temperature, on the transcriptability. The most dominant factor that affects the flow pattern and the transcriptability of the micro rib is flow rate. High flow rate and high melt temperature enhance the transcriptability of micro rib structure. High packing time and high packing pressure result in insignificant dimensional variations of the rib. Numerical simulation also confirms that low flow rate causes a short shot of micro ribs and high wall temperature helps the filling of the micro ribs.

  • Paste micro-injection molding process was applied for fabrication of barrier ribs of PDP in an attempt to reduce processing steps and materials loss during the processing. For the paste, a thermally curable one was used and for the mold, a polymeric soft mold was used. It was demonstrated that the micro-molding process can be used successfully in producing barrier ribs of PDP.

  • Plasma display panel (PDP) is a type of flat panel display utilizing the light emission that is produced by gas discharge. Barrier Ribs of PDP separating each sub-pixel prevents optical and electrical crosstalk from adjacent sub-pixels. Mold for forming barrier ribs has been newly researched to overcome the disadvantages of conventional manufacturing process such as screen printing, sand-blasting and photosensitive glass methods. Mold for PDP barrier ribs have stripes of micro grooves transferring stripes of glass-material wall. In this paper. Stripes of grooves of which width 48 um, depth 124um, pitch 274um was acquired by machining the material of WC with dicing saw blade. Maximum roughness of the bottom and sidewall of the grooves was respectively 120 nm, 287 nm. Maximum tilt angle caused by difference between upper-most width and lower-most width was 2$^{\circ}$. Maximum Radius of curvature of bottom was 7.75 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. This results meets the specification for barrier ribs of 50 inch XGA PDP. Forming the glass paste will be followed by using mold in the near future.

  • In an attempt to reduce processing cost and to improve resolution of PDPs, micro mold transfer processing route for barrier ribs of plasma display panel was developed. In this study, the parameters that may cause defects during the process were identified, which include the shrinkage during UV curing process, stress due to evaporation of organic components, and sintering shrinkage. Considering such parameters, UV curable paste was developed and barrier ribs of PDPs were successfully processed via the process. In addition, the process was successfully applied for the processing of barrier ribs with embedded counter electrodes.

  • In this study, waffle type barrier ribs for counter electrode discharge cells were prepared via micro-molding process. The master mold was prepared by UV lithography and working mold was manufactured by replicating the master mold. The UV paste used in this study consisted of ceramic powders for the barrier ribs, binder, hardener, and dispersant was filled into cavities of a polymeric mold by action of capillary pressure developed between mold and paste. The results demonstrated a possibility of one-step process for the manufacturing of waffle type barrier ribs embedded with sustaining electrodes.

  • Barrier ribs of plasma display panel (PDP) are glass matrix composite reinforced with alumina particles. Mechanical properties of the ribs are very crucial for the improvement in reliability of the panel as the ribs might fracture during transportation and service. In this study, therefore, the effects of filler type and content on the mechanical properties of the ribs were investigated. The fillers used include $Al_2O_3$, $TiO_2$, $ZrO_2$ and fused silica. The content of the filler was changed from 0 to 40 vol.%. The mechanical properties of the ribs measured were hardness, Young's modulus, fracture toughness, and 3-point bending modulus. The fracture toughness evaluated by micro-Vicker's indentation of the composites, in general, was measured to increase with the content of the filler until the sintered density does not decrease significantly. The improvement, however, was dependent on the type of filler employed.

Maximum tilt angle caused by difference between upper-most width and lower-most width was 2$^{\circ}$. Maximum Radius of bottom curvatures was 7.75${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. This results satisfies the specification for barrier ribs of 50 inch XGA PDP if the groove form of mold was fully transferred to the barrier ribs. Barrier ribs were formed with Silicone rubber mold, which is transferred from grooved hard materials. Silicone rubber mold has elasticity accommodating the waveness of lower glass plate of PDP.

  • Study of flow behavior within rod bundles has been an active topic. Surface modification technologies are important parts of the design of the fourth generation reactor, which can increase the strength of the secondary flow within the rod bundle lattices. Quasi-periodic large-scale vortex structure (QLVS) is introduced by arranging micro ribs on the surface of rod bundles, which enhanced the scale of the secondary flow between the rod bundle lattices. Using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and water experiments, the flow field distribution and drag coefficient of the rod-bundle lattices are studied. The secondary flow between the micro-ribbed rod-bundle lattice is significantly enhanced compared to the standard rod-bundle lattice. The numerical simulation results agree well with the experimental results.
