Objectives : The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the remineralization and acid resistance in fluoride varnish by Micro-computed tomography (micro CT). Methods : Specimens of bovine teeth enamel were embedded in resin, polished and randomly divided into 3 groups (a control group, a NaF solution group, a fluoride varnish group). Each group has 3 specimens that was standardized according to Vickers hardness number (VHN). Specimens were immersed in demineralization solution for 72 hours. The control group had no treatment, the NaF solution group was treated by a 5% NaF solution for 4 minutes, and the fluoride varnish group was treated by a fluoride varnish for one hour. All specimens were subjected to a chemical pH cycling method for 14 days. After a chemical pH cycling method, the density were measured using micro CT. Then, specimens were immersed in each demineralization solution for 72 hours. After demineralization processed, the density were measured using micro CT. Results : 1. The density was significantly higher in the fluoride varnish and 5% NaF solution group than that of the control group after 14 days cycling (p<0.05). And the density value of the fluoride varnish group was higher than that of the 5% NaF solution, with no significant difference. 2. The differences of density after acid resistance treatment were statistically significant among 3 groups(p<0.05). Conclusions : It is suggested that fluoride varnish showed the remineralizing effect and acid resistance effect on the enamel, and micro CT could be used to evaluate the change of enamel lesion.
There are considerable in vitro and in vivo evidences for remineralization and demineralization occurring simultaneously in incipient enamel caries. In order to "heal" the incipient dental caries, many experiments have been carried out to determine the optimal conditions for remineralization. It was shown that remineralization is affected by different pH, lactic acid concentrations, chemical composition of the enamel, fluoride concentrations, etc. Eighty specimens from sound permanent teeth without demineralization or cracks, 0.15 mm in thickness, were immersed in lactic acid buffered demineralization solutions for 3 days. Dental caries with a surface zone and subsurface lesion were artificially produced. Groups of 10 specimens were immersed for 10 or 12 days in lactic acid buffered remineralization solutions consisting of pH 4.3 or pH 6.0, and 100, 50, 25, or 10 mM lactic acid. After demineralization and remineralization, images were taken by polarizing microscopy (${\times}100$) and micro-computed tomography. The results were obtained by observing images of the specimens and the density of the caries lesions was determined. 1.As the lactic acid concentration of the remineralization solutions with pH 4.3 was higher, the surface zone of the carious enamel increased and an isotropic zone of the subsurface lesion was found. However, the total decalcification depth increased at the same time. 2.In the remineralization solutions with pH 6.0, only the surface zone increased slightly but there was no significant change in the total decalcification depth and subsurface zone. In the lactic acid buffer solutions with the lower pH and higher lactic acid concentration, there were dynamic changes at the deep area of the dental carious lesion.

There is no adverse opinion on the anticariogenic effect of fluoride, so glass ionomer restoration which release the fluoride is recommended fer child patient. To study the anticariogenic effect of initial carious lesion of fluoride released from adjacent glass ionomer restoration, the in situ model was constructed. A microhardness test, polarized scope investigation and electron probe microanalysis was done for analyzing the distribution of fluoride which was precipitated from glass ionomer restoration to the enamel caries lesion. Fuji IX, the conventional glass ionomer, was used for experimental group and Z-100, composite resin that fluoride was not contained, was used for control group. On the microhardness test, the remineralization was accelerated by fluoride. And on the polarized investigation, the size of caries lesion was reduced in the oral cavity and that phenomenon was accelerated by fluoride, too. Electron probe microanalysis shows that the remineralization was accelerated by fluoride and the fluoride concentration on subsurface area was increased. It maybe that the subsurface area was critical to anticariogenic effect. In summary of these result, initial caries lesion can be remineralized in the oral cavity and that phenomenon can be accelerated by fluoride. The subsurface area of caries lesion was a major part of defense to cariogenic invasion and to conserve the subsurface area, the surface of lesion body have to conserved.
The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of excessive occlusal loading on stress distribution on four type of cervical lesion, using a three dimensional finite element analysis (3D FEA). The extracted maxillary second premolar was scanned serially with Micro-CT. The 3D images were processed by 3D-DOCTOR. ANSYS was used to mesh and analyze 3D FE model. Four different lesion configurations representative of the various types observed clinically for teeth were studied. A static point load of 500N was applied to the buccal and lingual cusp (Load A and B). The principal stresses in lesion apex, and vertical sectioned margin of cervical wall were analyzed. The results were as follows 1. The patterns of stress distribution were similar but the magnitude was different in four types of lesion 2. The peak stress was observed at mesial corner and also stresses concentrated at lesion apex. 3. The compressive stress under load A and the tensile stress under load B were dominant stress. 4. Under the load, lesion can be increased and harmful to tooth structure unless restored.
Quantitative analysis was performed to confirm that moire artifact was removed without loss of image when using grid suppression software in the diagnosis of micro lesions. we showed that grid suppression images can be morphologically different from original images as they are significantly lower than those of the optimized grid in the similarity analysis with reference images in mammographic phantom images. We were confirmed that images of microcalcification with smaller signal than noise were lost because the pixel values of all lesions increased significantly after the grid suppression, The change in contrast using the NORMI 13 X-ray test phantom was reduced to 30% of the reference image, This result was significantly lower than the 90% when using the optimized grid. In conclusion, the use of grid suppression software in clinical images should be carefully considered because of the possibility of misdiagnosis due to micro lesion loss and morphological changes.

Considering the role of viscosity in the hemorheology, the characteristics of non-Newtonian fluid are important in the pulsatile blood flows. Stenosis, with an abnormal narrowing of the vessel, contributes to block blood flows to downstream tissue and lead to plaque rupture. Therefore, systematic analysis of blood flow around stenosed vessels is crucial. In this study, non-Newtonian behaviors of blood analog fluids around the micro-stenosis with 60 % severity in diameter of $500{\mu}m$ was examined by using CFX under the pulsatile flow conditions with the period of 10 s. Viscosity information of two non-Newtonian fluids were obtained by fitting the value of normal blood and highly viscous blood. As the Newtonian fluid, the water at room temperature was used. During the pulsatile phase, wall shear stress (WSS) is highly oscillated. In addition, high viscous solution gives rise to increases the variation in the WSS around the micro-stenosis. Highly oscillating WSS enhance increasing tendency of plaque instability or rupture and damage of the tissue layer. These results, related to the influence on the damage to the endothelium or stenotic lesion, may help clinicians understand relevant mechanisms.
Non-invasive technique CT, called automated computed tomography, is used to detect lesion of a patient when diagnosing human body. Information obtained from CT plays an important role in assembling 3 dimensional images. Recently, new equipment, operated by CT, is required which can be appliable to physical and biological research. In accordance to this quest, micro-CT is invented that produce more detail and concrete information. Images supplied by CT are even more detailed and concrete, so it contributes much to the development of biology and polymer material engineering field. However, there has been little reliable reports regarding measuring information of space dose distribution about exposure dose limit of users operating micro-CT. In addition, little reports regarding space dose distribution of exposure has been known about unwanted diffraction light produced by usage of micro-CT. The exterior of micro-CT is covered by lead, which is for removing exposure of diffraction light. Thus, even if it is good enough to prevent exposure of diffraction light, consistent management of equipment will be required as time goes by and equipment are getting old as well. We measured space dose distribution regarding exposure of diffraction light of users operating micro-CT directly. Therefore, we suggest that proper management should be necessary for users operating micro-CT not to be exposed by unwanted diffraction light.
Purpose: PET has some disadvantage in the imaging of small animal due to poor resolution. With the advent of microPET scanner, it is possible to image small animals. However, the image quality was not good enough as human image. Due to larger brain, cat brain imaging was superior to mouse or rat. In this study, we established the cat brain infarction model and evaluate it and its temporal charge using microPET scanner. Materials and Methods: Two adult male cats were used. Anesthesia was done with xylazine and ketamine HCl. A burr hole was made at 1cm right lateral to the bregma. Collagenase type IV 10 ${\mu}l$ was injected using 30 G needle for 5 minutes to establish the infarction model. $^{18}F$-FDG microPET (Concorde Microsystems Inc., Knoxville, TN) scans were performed 1, 11 and 32 days after the infarction. In addition, $^{18}F$-FDG PET scans were performed using human PET scanner (Gemini, Philips medical systems, CA, USA) 13 and 47 days after the infarction. Results: Two cat brain infarction models were established. The glucose metabolism of an infarction lesion improved with time. An infarction lesion was also distinguishable in the human PET scan. Conclusion: We successfully established the cat brain infarction model and evaluated the infarcted lesion and its temporal change using $^{18}F$-FDG microPET scanner.
Background: A piezoelectric immunosensor for early cervical cancer detection was developed involving short analyis time and less invasive technique for $p16^{INK4a}$, a protein that has been linked to cervical cancer. Materials and Methods: $5{\mu}L$ of 5.0 mg/mL $p16^{INK4a}$ antibody and then supernatant from different clinical samples from West China Second University Hospital (Sichuan, China) were dripped on the center of the AT-cut crystal through a micro-injector. Absorption of the $p16^{INK4a}$ by antibody caused a shift in the resonant frequency of the immunosensor, and the resonant frequency was correlated to the amount of the $p16^{INK4a}$ in the supernatant. Results: The greater severity of lesion grading, the greater the expression level of $p16^{INK4a}$. Conclusion: Degree of cervical cancer lesion development could be determined by detected amount of $p16^{INK4a}$ in different clinical samples.
Purpose: This study was aimed at elucidating the pathogenesis of talar osteochondral lesion by analyzing the histopathological findings. Materials and Methods: Twenty specimens from 20 patients who underwent surgical treatment for talus osteochondral lesions were studied. Preoperative MRI images including T1, T2, and stir images were taken and cases were classified according to modification of the Anderson's classification. There were 5 cases of MRI group 1, 6 cases of group 2, 7 cases of group 3 and 2 cases of group 4. A full thickness osteochondral plug including the osteochondral lesion of the talus was harvested from each patient and reviewed histopathologic changes of osteochondral fragment using H-E staining. Mean diameter of specimens was 8.5 mm and mean depth was 10.3 mm. Pathologic changes of articular cartilage and subchondral bone were observed. Subchondral bone was divided into superficial, middle and deep zones according to depth. Cartilage formation, trabecular thickening and marrow fibrosis were observed in each zone. Results: There were detachment of the joint cartilage at the tidemark in 16 cases of 20 cases and the separated cartilages were almost necrotic on the histopathologic findings. Cartilage formation within subchondral bone was discovered beneath the tidemark in 12 cases. Trabeculae were increased and thickened in 17 cases. These pathologic changes were similar to fracture healing process and these findings were more conspicuous near the tidemark and showed transition to normal bone marrow tissue with depth. No correlation between the pathological progression and MRI stages was found. A large cyst shown on MRI's was microscopically turned out to be multiple micro-cysts accompanied by fibrovascular structure and newly formed cartilage tissue. Conclusion: The histopathologic findings of osteochondral lesions are detachment of overlying cartilage at the tidemark and subsequent changes of subchondral bone. Subchondral bone changes are summarized as cartilage formation, marrow fibrosis and trabecular thickening that mean healing process following repeated micro fractures of trabecular. These osteochondral lesions should have differed from osteochondral fractures.
