This paper deals with the behavior of surface crack growth and the characteristics of surface micro-crack distribution under creep and creep-fatigue with 1 min. and 10 min. of load holding times at 593.deg.C, in air. The test specimen is a plate type with a small artificial defect of type 304 the small defect has been carried out by the surface replica method and optical microphotography. The experimental results have been interpreted from the view-point of fracture mechanics. It can be concluded that the longer the hold time the longer the total life time. Most of surface micro-cracks initiate at grain boundaries before the specimen reaches 20% of its total life time, a few of them lead to fracture by coalescence with the main crack.

In this paper, glass cap wafer for MEMS device package is fabricated by using sand blaster dry etcher and Its surface is studied. The surface of dry etched glass is analyzed by using SEM, and many glass particles and micro cracks are observed. If these kind of particles were dropped from glass to the surface of device, It would make critical failure to the operation of device. So, several cleaning and etching methods are induced to remove these kinds of dormant failure mode and optimized condition is found out.
The boiler tubes of thermal power plants are exposed to harsh environment of high temperature and high pressure, and the deterioration state of materials rapidly increases. In particular, parent material and welds of the materials used are subjected to a temperature change and various constraints, resulting in deformation and its growth, resulting in frequent leakage accidents caused by tube failure. The power plant checks the integrity of boiler tubes through non-destructive testing as it may act as huge costs loss and limitation of power supply during power station shutdown period due to boiler tube leakage. However, the current non-destructive testing is extremely limited in the field to detect micro cracks. In this study, the ability of metal magnetic memory technique to detect flaws of size that are difficult to inspect by the visual or general non-destructive methods was verified in the early stage of their occurrence.

Many techniques have been proposed and investigated for microlens array manufacturing in three-dimensional (3D) structures. We present fabricating a microlens array using selective laser etching and a CO2 laser. The femtosecond laser was employed to produce multiple micro-cracks that comprise the predesigned 3D structure. Subsequently, the wet etching process with a KOH solution was used to produce the primary microlens array structures. To polish the nonoptical surface to the optical surface, we performed reflow postprocessing using a CO2 laser. We confirmed that the micro lens array can be manufactured in three primary shapes (cone, pyramid and hemisphere). Compared to our previous study, the processing time required for laser processing was reduced from approximately 1 hour to less than 30 seconds using the proposed processing method. Therefore, micro lens arrays can be manufactured using our processing method and can be applied to mass productionon large surface areas.

In this study mechanical strength of A53B carbon steel was analyzed using several types of test specimens directly machined from oil recycling pipe experienced a failure due to hydrogen attack in chemical plants. High temperature hydrogen attack (HTHA) is the damage process of grain boundary facets due to a chemical reaction of carbides with hydrogen, thus forming cavities with high pressure methane gas. Driven by the methane gas pressure, the cavities grow on grain boundaries forming intergranular micro cracks. Microscopic optical examination, tensile test, Charpy impact test, hardness measurement, and small punch (SP) test were performed. Carbon content of the hydrogen attacked specimens was dramatically reduced compared with that of standard specification of A53B. Traces of decarburization and micro-cracks were observed by optical and scanning electron microscopy. Charpy impact energy in hydrogen attacked part of the pipe exhibited very low values due to the decarburization and micro fissure formation by HTHA, on the other hand, data tested from the sound part of the pipe showed high and scattered impact energy. Maximum reaction forces and ductility in SP test were decreased at hydrogen attacked part of the pipe compared with sound part of the pipe. Finite element analyses for SP test were performed to estimate tensile properties for untested part of the pipe in tensile test. And fracture toughness was calculated using an equivalent strain concept with SP test and finite element analysis results.

This paper presents some experimental results on incubation time for massive hydriding of Zr alloys with oxide thickness. Oxide effects experiments on massive hydriding reaction of commercial Zr alloy claddings and pre-oxidized Zr alloys with hydrogen gas were carried out in the temperature range from 300 to $400^{\circ}C$ with thermo-gravimetric apparatus. Experimental results for oxide effects on massive hydriding kinetics show that incubation time is not proportional to oxide thickness and that the massive hydriding kinetics of pre-filmed Zr alloys follows linear kinetic law and the hydriding rate are similar to that of oxide-free Zr alloys once massive hydriding is initiated. There was a difference in micro-structures between oxide during incubation time and oxide after incubation time. Physical defects such as micro-cracks and pores were observed in only oxide after incubation time. Therefore, the massive hydriding of Zr alloys seems to be ascribed to short circuit path, mechacical or physical defects, such as micro-cracks and pores in the oxide rather than hydrogen diffusion through the oxide resulting from the increase of oxygen vacancies in the hypostoichiometric oxide.
Failure of basic structures material is usually accompanied by expansion of interior cracks due to stress concentration at the cracks tip. This phenomenon shows the importance of examination of the failure behavior of concrete structures. To this end, 4 types of mortar samples with different amounts of nano-silica (0%, 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5%) were made to prepare twelve $50{\times}50{\times}50mm$ cubic samples. The goal of this study was to describe the failure and micro-crack growth behavior of the cement mortars in presence of nano-silica particles and control mortars during different curing days. Failure of mortar samples under compressive strength were sensed with acoustic emission technique (AET) at different curing days. It was concluded that the addition of nano-silica particles could modify failure and micro-crack growth behavior of mortar samples. Also, monitoring of acoustic emission parameters exposed differences in failure behavior due to the addition of the nanoparticles. Mortar samples of nano-silica particles revealed stronger shear mode characteristics than those without nanoparticles, which revealed high acoustic activity due to heterogeneous matrix. It is worth mentioning that the highest compressive strength for 3 and 7 test ages obtained from samples with the addition of 1.5% nano-silica particles. On the other hand maximum compressive strength of 28 curing days obtained from samples with 1% combination of nano-silica particles.

Hybrid SHCC is being researched actively for its excellent performance in controlling macro and micro cracks using macro and micro fibers, respectively. However, a significant autogenous shrinkage of SHCC is expected since it possesses high unit cement volume in its mix proportion, resulting in autogenous shrinkage cracks. Therefore, this study was performed to evaluate mechanical property of shrinkage-reducing type hybrid SHCC mixed together with steel fiber and PE fiber with excellent micro/macro crack controlling performance. In order to evaluate mechanical property of shrinkage-reducing type hybrid SHCC, replacement ratios of 0% and 10% of expansive admixture and water to binder ratios of 0.45, 0.3, and 0.2 were considered as variables. Then, shrinkage, compressive, flexural, and direct tensile tests were performed. The test results showed that mix proportion with W/B 0.3 significantly improved mechanical performance by using 10% replacement of expansive admixture.

Over the past few decades, considerable numbers of studies on the durability of concrete have been carried out extensively. The majority of these researches have been performed on sound uncracked concrete, although most of in-situ concrete structures have more or less micro-cracks. It is only recent approach that the attention has shifted towards the influence of cracks and crack width on the penetration of chloride into concrete. The penetration of chlorides into concrete through the cracks can make a significant harmful effect on reinforcement corrosion. Author of this study examined the effect of cracks on chloride penetration by short tem experiment. However, it is necessary to accomplish the effect by long term experiment to get reliable goal. In this study, the long term experiment was carried out and the experimental result was compared with short term experiment. Crack tends to decrease with elapsed time because of self-healing. Especially this trend was obvious in concrete sample with wide crack with.
Although the self-compacting concrete (SCC) offers several practical and economic benefits and quality improvement in concrete constructions, in comparison with conventionally vibrated concretes confronts with autogenously chemical and drying shrinkage which causes the formation of different cracks and creates different problems in concrete structures. Using different fibers in the mix design and implementation of fibrous concrete, the problem can be solved by connecting cracks and micro cracks together and postponing the propagation of them. In this study an experimental investigation using response surface methodology (RSM) based on full factorial design has been undertaken in order to model and evaluate the polypropylene fiber effect on the fibrous self-compacting concrete and curing time, fiber percentage and fiber amount have been considered as input variables. Compressive strength has been measured and calculated as the output response to achieve a mathematical relationship between input variables. To evaluate the proposed model analysis of variance at a confidence level of 95% has been applied and finally optimum compressive strength predicted. After analyzing the data, it was found that the presented mathematical model is in very good agreement with experimental results. The overall results of the experiments confirm the validity of the proposed model and this model can be used to predict the compressive strength of fibrous self-compacting concrete.
