과도한 열손실을 수반하는 초소형 정적연소실 내 화염전파 (Flame Propagation in a Micro Vessel under Excessive Heat Loss)

  • A numerical investigation on the flame propagation and extinction in a micro combustor is described. Previous measurements of $H_2-air$ flame propagation in a submilimeter scale combustor exhibited significance of wall effects on burning velocity and extinction. The heat transfer to wall becomes important not only in the cooling of burnt gases but also during the flame ropagation, which has be by and large ignored in macro scale combustor calculations. In order to take the heat loss into account the combustion calculation, we developed a numerical code with a heat transfer model that was determined empirically from measured data. PISO algorithm was used for differencing of conservation equations. $H_2-air$ reaction was modeled with 10 species - 16 steps. Comparison with measured data showed good agreement in flame propagation speed. Also the pressure decrease after flame extinction was accurately predicted by the model. A further study is desirable for a better quenching model that can predict the quenching location.

  • The relationship between mass transfer and reaction within the washcoat is investigated in a monolith type micro-scale Pt-catalytic combustor. Nondimensionalized balance equation of butane is applied in a simplified washcoat geometry having the shape of slab. Both Thiele modulus and effectiveness factor are considered to compare reaction rate and diffusion rate according to the operation temperature and the diameter of alumina nano-pores. The effect of reaction becomes stronger as the temperature increases, while the effect of diffusion becomes relatively dominant as the diameter of nano-pores increases. From the analysis of butane distribution within the washcoat, design criterion for the thickness of washcoat is discussed.

Point Cloud Measurement Using Improved Variance Focus Measure Operator

  • The dimensional accuracy and consistency of a dual oil circuit centrifugal fuel nozzle are important for fuel distribution and combustion efficiency in an engine combustion chamber. A point cloud measurement method was proposed to solve the geometric accuracy detection problem for the fuel nozzle. An improved variance focus measure operator was used to extract the depth point cloud. Compared with other traditional sharpness evaluation functions, the improved operator can generate the best evaluation curve, and has the least noise and the shortest calculation time. The experimental results of point cloud slicing measurement show that the best window size is 24 × 24 pixels. In the height measurement experiment of the standard sample block, the relative error is 2.32%, and in the fuel nozzle cone angle measurement experiment, the relative error is 2.46%, which can meet the high precision requirements of a dual oil circuit centrifugal fuel nozzle.

  • Spray combustion characteristics of a conducting fuel electrospray have been studied for clean combustion technology. The multiplexing system which can retain the characteristics of the cone-jet mode is inevitable for the electrospray application. Charged micro droplets can be obtained in almost uniform size during operating the electrospray in the cone-jet mode. This experiment device set up the multiplexed grooved nozzle system with the extractor. Using the grooved nozzle, the stable cone-jet mode can be achieved at the each groove in the grooved mode. This electrospray system was applied to the diffusion combustion. It is the first step to discover the diffusion combustion characteristics of the electrospray. In case of the single grooved nozzle electrospray, the diffusion flames are occurred at each jet of grooved mode and they are quite stable. The exhaust gas analysis was indicated that there is the critical point which can make very stable diffusion combustion.

  • Spray combustion characteristics of the conducting fuel electrospray has been studied for clean combustion technology. The electrospraying multiplexed system which can maintain the characteristics of the cone-jet mode is able to obtain charged micro droplets with high flow rate. In addition, they have monodisperse distribution during operating the electrospray in the cone-jet mode. The multiplexed grooved nozzle system with the extractor was applied to this experimental device set up. The stable grooved mode can be generated by the grooved nozzle and this electrospray system was applied to the diffusion combustion.   • Miniaturization of subsystems including propulsion systems is recent trends in spacecraft technology. Small space vehicle propulsion is not only a technological challenge of a scaling system down, but also a combination of fundamental flow/combustion constraints. In this paper, physical constraints of micronozzle for cold gas micro-thruster are reviewed and discussed. Method to measure small thrust are also described.

  • Development projects in KAIST rotted to the micro thermal device is introduced. Multi disciplinary research team is composed by combustion group and semiconductor group in KAIST and catalyst research center in KRICT to develop micro thermal/fluidic device and various items are on development. Among the projects, various kind of componenst that is required by the micro thermal devicesystem is introduced. Technology related to development of micro combustor, Micro igniter, micro fabrication of 3D structure, micro reactor and micro catalyst preparation is introduced.

화염-표면 상호작용에 의한 예혼합 화염의 열소염 및 화학소염에 관한 연구 (A Study of Thermal and Chemical Quenching of Premixed Flame by Flame-Surface Interaction)

  • Incomplete combustion due to quenching in a narrow confinement has been a major problem for realization of a reliable micro combustion device. In most micro combustors, effects of flows are absent in the quenching because the flow is laminar and no severe stretch is present. In such circumstance, quenching is caused either by heat loss or by removal of active radicals to the wall surface of the confinement. An experimental investigation was carried out to investigate the relative significance of these two causes of quenching of a premixed flame. A premixed jet burner with a rectangular cross section at the exit was built. At the burner exit, the flame stands between two walls with adjustable distance. The gap between the two walls at which quenching occurs was measured at different wall surface conditions. The results were analyzed to estimate the relative significance of heat loss to the wall and the removal of radicals at the surface. The measurements indicated that the quenching distance was independent of the wall surface characteristics such as oxygen vacancy, grain boundary, or impurities at low temperature. At high temperature, however, the surface characteristics strongly affect the quenching distance, implying that radical removal at the wall plays a significant role in the quenching process.

  • In this study, opposed flow combustion was re-visited in a narrow channel. Various flame behaviors were observed. Due to the confined structure of the combustor in this study, flame structures at very narrow strain rate could be stabilized and their characteristics were investigated. This study will be helpful to understand overall flame behavior of non-premixed flame in a narrow combustion space, and will also be useful to develop small combustors.

  • 마이크로 고체 추진제 추력기는 현재의 MEMS 기술로 가장 실현 가능성이 높은 마이크로 추력기이다. 마이크로 고체 추진제 추력기의 기본 요소로는 마이크로 노즐, 마이크로 점화기, 연소 챔버 그리고 고체 추진제이다. 마이크로 노즐과 연소 챔버는 감광유리의 이방성 식각을 통해 제작이 되었다. 마이크로 점화기는 마이크로 유리 박막 백금 히터를 사용하였다. 요소들의 제작 공정을 확립 후, 요소들을 통합하여 추력기를 개발하였다. 추력기의 연소 실험을 수행하여 성공적으로 연소가 일어남을 확인하였다.
