With the development of micro electronic circuits and optical equipment, the demand for developing smart munitions with the ability to autonomously search for and attack targets has increased. Since the electronic components within smart munitions are affected by high temperatures, pressure, and impulsive forces upon the combustion of gunpowder, stability and reliability need to be secured for them. Securing those stability and reliability requires soft recovery system which can decelerate smart munitions. A theoretical analysis of flow is performed for the secure recovery of bullets on the basis of Euler equation for compressible fluids. The inner pressure on a pressure tube, the speeds of bullets, and the deceleration of munitions are calculated theoretically. Theoretical results are compared with the data from the experiment with soft recovery system set up at the laboratory.

Fire is one of important checkpoints in crewed exploration systems, where men inhabit in space. In space, astronaut can't escape from fire out of a spacecraft and not expect any help of fire fighters, either. Accordingly, the best way to stand against fire is to prevent it. But, when fire occurs in space, flame behaviors are quite different from those observed on earth because of micro- or zero-gravity in space. The present paper introduces major research results on flame behaviors under microgravity and fire prevention, detection, and suppression in crewed exploration spacecrafts and international space station based on NASA's FPDS research program.

Since the electric vehicle uses an electric motor, problems have arisen as the driver hears the inherent noise of the motor or external noise, which was not a problem in the past, due to the overall lower noise environment than when using an internal combustion engine. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to reduce the noise and vibration of electric motors for electric vehicles, and recently, to increase the speed of high-power, high-efficiency electric motors in a small size, and to develop low-noise motors, IPM motors are applied to produce 35KW electric motors for electric vehicles. A motor for low noise was designed and implemented. N-T Curve and efficiency map were confirmed as the final result of developing a 35KW low-noise motor for electric vehicles by applying the IPM motor applied in this paper. Based on 3500 rpm, Max Torque [Nm]: 121.15, Max Power [KW]: 44.04, and Max Efficiency [%]: 97.65, showing high efficiency.

Hybrid rockets have lately attracted attention as a strong candidate of small, low cost, safe and reliable launch vehicles. A significant topic is that the first commercially sponsored space ship, SpaceShipOne vehicle chose a hybrid rocket. The main factors for the choice were safety of operation, system cost, quick turnaround, and thrust termination. In Japan, five universities including Hokkaido University and three private companies organized "Hybrid Rocket Research Group" from 1998 to 2002. Their main purpose was to downsize the cost and scale of rocket experiments. In 2002, UNISEC (University Space Engineering Consortium) and HASTIC (Hokkaido Aerospace Science and Technology Incubation Center) took over the educational and R&D rocket activities respectively and the research group dissolved. In 2008, JAXA/ISAS and eleven universities formed "Hybrid Rocket Research Working Group" as a subcommittee of the Steering Committee for Space Engineering in ISAS. Their goal is to demonstrate technical feasibility of lowcost and high frequency launches of nano/micro satellites into sun-synchronous orbits. Hybrid rockets use a combination of solid and liquid propellants. Usually the fuel is in a solid phase. A serious problem of hybrid rockets is the low regression rate of the solid fuel. In single port hybrids the low regression rate below 1 mm/s causes large L/D exceeding a hundred and small fuel loading ratio falling below 0.3. Multi-port hybrids are a typical solution to solve this problem. However, this solution is not the mainstream in Japan. Another approach is to use high regression rate fuels. For example, a fuel regression rate of 4 mm/s decreases L/D to around 10 and increases the loading ratio to around 0.75. Liquefying fuels such as paraffins are strong candidates for high regression fuels and subject of active research in Japan too. Nakagawa et al. in Tokai University employed EVA (Ethylene Vinyl Acetate) to modify viscosity of paraffin based fuels and investigated the effect of viscosity on regression rates. Wada et al. in Akita University employed LTP (Low melting ThermoPlastic) as another candidate of liquefying fuels and demonstrated high regression rates comparable to paraffin fuels. Hori et al. in JAXA/ISAS employed glycidylazide-poly(ethylene glycol) (GAP-PEG) copolymers as high regression rate fuels and modified the combustion characteristics by changing the PEG mixing ratio. Regression rate improvement by changing internal ballistics is another stream of research. The author proposed a new fuel configuration named "CAMUI" in 1998. CAMUI comes from an abbreviation of "cascaded multistage impinging-jet" meaning the distinctive flow field. A CAMUI type fuel grain consists of several cylindrical fuel blocks with two ports in axial direction. The port alignment shifts 90 degrees with each other to make jets out of ports impinge on the upstream end face of the downstream fuel block, resulting in intense heat transfer to the fuel. Yuasa et al. in Tokyo Metropolitan University employed swirling injection method and improved regression rates more than three times higher. However, regression rate distribution along the axis is not uniform due to the decay of the swirl strength. Aso et al. in Kyushu University employed multi-swirl injection to solve this problem. Combinations of swirling injection and paraffin based fuel have been tried and some results show very high regression rates exceeding ten times of conventional one. High fuel regression rates by new fuel, new internal ballistics, or combination of them require faster fuel-oxidizer mixing to maintain combustion efficiency. Nakagawa et al. succeeded to improve combustion efficiency of a paraffin-based fuel from 77% to 96% by a baffle plate. Another effective approach some researchers are trying is to use an aft-chamber to increase residence time. Better understanding of the new flow fields is necessary to reveal basic mechanisms of regression enhancement. Yuasa et al. visualized the combustion field in a swirling injection type motor. Nakagawa et al. observed boundary layer combustion of wax-based fuels. To understand detailed flow structures in swirling flow type hybrids, Sawada et al. (Tohoku Univ.), Teramoto et al. (Univ. of Tokyo), Shimada et al. (ISAS), and Tsuboi et al. (Kyushu Inst. Tech.) are trying to simulate the flow field numerically. Main challenges are turbulent reaction, stiffness due to low Mach number flow, fuel regression model, and other non-steady phenomena. Oshima et al. in Hokkaido University simulated CAMUI type flow fields and discussed correspondence relation between regression distribution of a burning surface and the vortex structure over the surface.

The main objective of this study is to investigate the variation in the ignition characteristics of coals as a function of moisture content in a laminar flow reactor (LFR) equipped with a fuel moisture micro-supplier designed by the Pusan Clean Coal Center. The volatile ignition position and time were observed experimentally when a pulverized coal with moisture was fed into the LFR under burning conditions similar to those at the exit of the pulverizer and real boiler. The reaction-zone temperature along the centerline of the reactor was measured with a $70-{\mu}m$, R-type thermocouple. For different moisture contents, the volatile ignition position was determined based on an average of 15 to 20 images captured by a CCD camera using a proprietary image-processing technique. The reaction zone decreased proportionally as a function of the moisture content. As the moisture content increased, the volatile ignition positions were 2.92, 3.36, 3.96, and 4.65 mm corresponding to ignition times of 1.46, 1.68, 2.00, and 2.33 ms, respectively. These results indicate that the ignition position and time increased exponentially. We also calculated the ignition-delay time derived from the adiabatic thermal explosion. It showed a trend that was similar to that of the experimental data.
The composite material has the advantage that the fibers can be arranged in a desired direction and can be manufactured in one piece. However, micro voids can be formed due to micro air, moisture or improper curing temperature or pressure, which may cause the deterioration in mechanical strength. In this paper, the composite panels with different thicknesses were made by varying the curing pressure in an autoclave vacuum bag process and their microporosities were evaluated. Microporosity was measured by image analysis method, acid digestion method, and combustion method and their correlation with ultrasonic attenuation coefficient was analyzed. From the test results, it was found that the acid digestion method had the highest accuracy and the lower the curing pressure, the higher the microporosity and the ultrasonic attenuation coefficient. In addition, the microporosity and the ultrasonic attenuation coefficient were increased as the thickness of the composite panel was increased at the same curing pressure.
An experimental investigation was conducted on the influences of median size, dust concentration, dust condition (cloud and layer) for the fire and explosion hazard assessment of dusts with the same powder property. For this purpose, tests have been performed in accordance with 20 L explosion sphere, thermogravi- metric analyze, combustion rate tester (UN method). We investigated the explosion characteristics and flame propagation velocity (FPV) in dust cloud and the flame spread velocity(FSV) over dust layer on 8 dust samples with different particle sizes of 4 types of dusts (Sugar, Mg, Al, Zr). An explosion hazard increased with decreasing particle size in Mg and Al dust clouds, but sugar did not show the effect of explosion hazard due to particle size change in dust clouds. The flame propagation velocity (FPV) of suspended dusts increased significantly when the particle size decreased from micro to nano than the variation of particle size in micro range. The flame spread velocity (FSV) over dust layer showed a tendency to increase over the inclined dust layers (30° slope) rather than the horizontal dust layers (0° slope). The flame spread rate (FSV) over dust layers increased on the inclined dust layer (30° slope) rather than the horizontal dust layer (0° slope) and was higher upward flame than the downward flame in condition of inclined dust layers(30° slope).

Mankind is enjoying a great convenience of their life by the rapid growth of secondary industry since the Industrial Revolution and it is possible due to the invention of huge power such as engine. The automobile which plays the important role of industrial development and human movement is powered by the Engine Module, and especially Diesel engine is widely used because of mechanical durability and energy efficiency. The main work mechanism of the Diesel engine is composed of inhalation of the organic material (coal, oil, etc.), combustion, explosion and exhaust Cycle process then the carbon compound emissions during the last exhaust process are essential which is known as the major causes of air pollution issues in recent years. In particular, COx, called carbon oxide compound which is composed of a very small size of the particles from several ten to hundred nano meter and they exist as a suspension in the atmosphere. These Diesel particles can be accumulated at the respiratory organs and cause many serious diseases. In order to compensate for the weak point of such a Diesel Engine, the DPF(Diesel Particulate Filter) post-cleaning equipment has been used and it mainly consists of ceramic materials(SiC, Cordierite etc) because of the necessity for the engine system durability on the exposure of high temperature, high pressure and chemical harsh environmental. Ceramic Material filter, but it remains a lot of problems yet, such as limitations of collecting very small particles below micro size, high cost due to difficulties of manufacturing process and low fuel consumption efficiency due to back pressure increase by the small pore structure. This study is to test the possibility of new structure by direct infiltration of SiC Whisker on Carbon felt as the next generation filter and this new filter is expected to improve the above various problems of the Ceramic DPF currently in use and reduction of the cost simultaneously. In this experiment, non-catalytic VS CVD (Vapor-Solid Chemical Vaporized Deposition) system was adopted to keep high mechanical properties of SiC and MTS (Methyl-Trichloro-Silane) gas used as source and H2 gas used as dilute gas. From this, the suitable whisker growth for high performance filter was observed depending on each deposition conditions change (input gas ratio, temperature, mass flow rate etc.).

This paper describes the continuing effort to analysis and design on dynamic and electrical behavior of gamma-type free piston Stirling engine/generator with dual-opposed linear generator for domestic micro-CHP (Combined Heat and Power) system. The double acting Stirling engine/generator has one displacer and two power piston which are supported by flexure springs. Two power pistons oscillate with symmetric sinusoidal displacement and are connected with moving magnet type linear generators for power generation. To operate Stirling engine/generator, combustion heat of natural gas is supplied to hot-end and heat is rejected from cold-end by cooling water. The temperature difference across the displacer induces the oscillating motion, and it can be explained with mass-spring vibration system. The purpose of this paper is to describe the design process of linear generator for the double acting free-piston Stirling engine.
A study was carried out on the level of heavy metals, total coliform and benzo(a)pyrene that may be introduced through by-product fertilizers or air pollution to turfgrass in natural turfgrass playground in elementary schools around the western coast and eastern mountain areas in Jeollabuk-do, Korea. The level of heavy metals found in turfgrass was in the order of Cu > Zn > Pb > Cd. The majority of heavy metals was found in the roots. It is presumed that the absorption of some air pollutants and by-product fertilizers or chemical fertilizers. The level of benzo(a)pyrene showed an average of 0.05ng/g with a range between 0.02 to 0.08ng/g in the leaves. In the meantime, none was detected in the stems, while the average for roots was 0.02ng/g with a range between 0.01 and 0.03ng/g. The level detected is that found background level, however, benzo(a)pyrene can be introduced partly from the unstable combustion of fossil fuel or through vehicle emissions. Total coliform distributed in grass showed an average of 12MPN/100ml with a range between 2 and 36MPN/100ml. The density of total coliform displayed no regional predominance. However, in some urban areas, the density was slightly higher. The feces of pets or by-product fertilizers may have contributed to the input of pathogenic micro-organism. Yet the level was found to be negligible.
