  • In order to obtain a new heat transfer fluid having a high thermal capacity, micro-capsules of a phase-change material can be a successful candidate to be added into water. In this study, 25, 50, 100, and $200\mu$m diameter micro-encapsulated Lauric acids were tested by a differential scanning calorimeter. The Lauric acid itself had a single freezing curve, but the micro-encapsulated Lauric acid had double freezing curves. The second freezing dominated for $25\mu$m diameter Lauric acids. But the first freeing energy became big as the size of the capsule increased.

  • Calorimeter is one of widely used biosensors. Conventional or existing calorimeters are realized directly on a silicon wafer which has very high thermal conductivity. It results in decreasing temperature difference between junctions and it makes a sensitivity of calorimeter to be decreased. In this study, the microcalorimeter was made by using MEMS(Micro Electro Mechanical Systems)-technology and hot junctions of the microcalorimeter are released from a silicon substrate to reduce loss of generated heat by reactions between biomolecules. Sensitivity of the released microcalorimeter was 18 mV/M which is 1.5 times higher than another calorimeters on silicon substrate by reactions between biotin and streptavidin.

  • This study investigates the thermal and mechanical properties of insulation elements through the mixing of epoxy based micro and nano particles. Regarding their thermal properties, differential scanning calorimeter and dynamic mechanical analyser were used to calculate the cross-linking densities for various types of insulation elements. The mechanical properties of the bending strength, the shape and scale parameters, were obtained using the Weibull plot. This study obtained the best results in the scale parameters, at 0.5 phr, for the bending strength of the epoxy nano-and-micro mixture composites.

  • Low temperature micro-calorimeters have been employed in the field of high resolution alpha spectrometers. These alpha detectors typically consist of a superconducting or metal absorber and a temperature sensor. The temperature sensor can be a transition edge sensor (TES), a metallic magnetic calorimeter (MMC) or other low temperature detectors for an accurate measurement of temperature change due to an alpha particle absorption. We report a recent study of the heat flow between a replaceable absorber and a temperature sensor. A piece of gold foil in $2.4{\times}2.7{\times}0.03\;mm^3$ is used as an absorber. A $40\;{\mu}m$ diameter Au:Er paramagnetic sensor is attached to another small piece of gold foil in $400{\times}200{\times}30\;{\mu}m^3$ to serve as the temperature sensor. This sensor assembly, Au:Er and gold foil, is placed on a miniature SQUID susceptometer in a gradiometric configuration. The thermal connection between the absorber and the sensor was made with three gold bonding wires. The measured thermal conductance shows a linear dependence to the temperature. The values are in a good agreement with Wiedemann-Franz type thermal conductance of the gold wires.

  • During natural ageing of HTPB propellant undergoes a series of slow physico-chemical degradation reactions. By using accelerated ageing conditions it is possible to simulate the material behaviour at different time-temperature conditions especially focused on the in-service conditions. Ageing behaviour of HTPB propellant were investigated using HFC(Micro-Heat Flow Calorimeter) is universal technique for measuring the rate of slow chemical and physical processes in long-term storage.

  • For many years, alkali activated blast furnace slag cement containing no ordinary portland cement has received much attention in the view of energy saving and its many excellent properties. We examined the structural change of slag glass which was activated by alkali metal compounds using IR spectroscopy. The properties of hydrated products and unhydrated slag grains was characterized by XRD and micro-conduction calorimeter. Ion concentration change in the liquid during the hydration of blast furnace slag was also studied to investigated the hydration mechanism.

  • To enhance heat transfer characteristics of water, micro-encapsulated octadecane of about $10{\mu}m$ diameter was added to water. Viscosity of the slurry was measured by using a capillary tube viscometer. The measured viscosity decreased as the temperature of the slurry increased, and it increased as the fraction of the capsules in the slurry increased. Thermal characteristics of the octadecane were studied by using a differential scanning calorimeter. The melting temperature and the melting energy of the octadecane were found to be $28.6^{\circ}$ and 34.4kcal/kg, respectively. The convective heat transfer characteristics of the slurry were investigated in a flow loop with a constant heat flux test section. Friction factor of the slurry flow was found to be similar to the expected curve by Petukhov. The Nusselt number of the slurry flow was highest when the octadecane melted. Effective thermal capacity of the 14.2% slurry was found to have 1.67 times of the thermal capacity of water.

  • Effects of hydrogenation on microstructure and mechanical properties of pure Ti and Ti-0.15Pd alloy have been studied by means of optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimeter(DSC), Xray diffraction and micro vicker's hardness test. Grain size of pure Ti and Ti-0.15Pd alloy decresed largely by hydrogenation finer than that of pure Ti and the grain size refinement was evedent in Ti-0.15Pd alloy than that in pure Ti. Ti-.015Pd alloy carried out solution treatment at 950$^{\circ}C$, the transformation of $\alpha$' martensite was occured. The amount of Hydrogen absorption in Ti-.015Pd alloy was higher than that in pure Ti. Decomposition of hydride in pure titanium and Ti-0.15Pd alloy increased largely by hydrogenation, and micro vicker's hardness of Ti-.015Pd alloy was largely than that of pure Ti by 30% after hydrogenation. The micro vicker's hardness of Ti-0.15Pd alloy after solution treatment and dehydrogenation were higher at $\beta$ phase ranger(950$^{\circ}C$) than that phase range(750$^{\circ}C$).

  • The effect of zirconate having - NH functional group on the T-peel and lap shear strength of $CaCO_3$ containing structural epoxy adhesive for car body assembly was investigated. Curing behavior of epoxy adhesive samples were investigated by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) techniques. The addition of zirconate up to 7.5 phr did not affect the curing mechanism of epoxy adhesive. While the small amount of zirconate addition less than 1.1 phr increased the cross-linking density, the excess addition of zirconate resulted in the increase of uncross-linked impurity. From the increase of T-peel and lap shear strength and the change of fracture mode from the adhesive failure to the mixed one, it was considered that the small addition of zirconate was effective in improving the adhesion strength of epoxy adhesive to the adherend and inorganic filler surfaces. The formation of uncross-linked impurity with the excess addition of zirconate was considered to decrease the joint strength by decreasing the cohesive strength of the cured epoxy.

  • In the resent years, as the research and the development of micro and precision machinery become active, the interest of micro actuators using SMA(Shape Memory Alloy) has been increased. But, no detailed researches between the thermo-dynamic property in Nitinol alloy have been done yet. In this study, the thermal property of high temperature Nitinol shape memory alloy were evaluated using differential scanning calorimeter(DSC). The structure property was investigated using X-ray diffraction(XRD). A dynamic mechanical analyzer(DMA) with three point bending mode was used to study storage and loss modulus of shape memory alloy according to the thirteen frequencies in the temperature range between 30 and $200^{\circ}C$. The effects of the temperature heating/cooling rate, the frequency on the damping capacity have been systematically investigated. Such a frequency and temperature changes also influenced significantly to the damping behavior of the shape memory alloy. It was also found that Nitinol exhibited high damping capacity during phase transformation.
