  • Despite the D-optimality criterion becomes very popular in designing an experiment for nonlinear models because of theoretical foundations it provides, it is very critical that the criterion depends on the unknown parameters of the nonlinear model. But some nonlinear models turned out to be partially nonlinear in sense that the optimal design depends on the subset of parameters only. It was a strong belief that the maximin approach to find a robust design to protect against the uncertainty of parameters is not guaranteed to be successful in nonlinear models. But the maximin approach could be a success for the partial nonlinear model, because often the optimal design depends on only one unknown value of parameter, easier to handle than the full parameters. We deal with maximin approach for Michaelis-Menten model with respect to D- and $D_s$-optimality.

  • Henri-Michaelis-Menten model for predicting the behavior of culture of Brevibacterium flavum under carbon limiting condition has been evaluated on a chemostat growing in the presence of the phenol derivatives: guaiacol, o-vanillin and vanillin. It is found that Henri-Michaelis-Menten model could be applicable to the evaluation of the growth rate of cells in the phenol derivatives. The marked enhancing abilities of the cells treated by the phenol derivatives during fermentation were ascribed to the formation of charge-transfer complex between the phenol-derivatives and oxygen which supplies oxygen effectively to the fermentation system.

  • A simplified mathematical model for the production of high-purity fructo-oligosaccharides by the mixed-enzyme system of fructosyl transferees and glucose oxidase was proposed and compared with the experimental results. The kinetic parameters including $K_m,\;V_{max}\;and\;K_{iG}$ were estimated at $40^{\circ}C$, in which $K_m$, values decreased and $K_{iG}$ and $V_{max}$ values increased compared with those of fructosyl transferees alone. The kinetics of the mixed-enzyme system was successfully described in the form of Michaelis-Menten equations. At the reasonable sucrose concentrations tested, the simulated sugar profiles were of good agreement with the experimental ones.

  • As the environmental pollution caused by excessive uses of chemical fertilizers and pesticides is aggravated, organic farming using pasture and livestock manure is gaining an increased necessity. The application rate of the organic farming materials to the field is determined as a function of crops and soil types, weather and cultivation surroundings. When livestock manure is used for organic farming materials, the volatilization of ammonia from field-spread animal manure is a major source of atmospheric pollution and leads to a significant reduction in the fertilizer value of the manure. Therefore, an ammonia emission model should be presented to reduce the ammonia emission and to know appropriate application rate of manure. In this study, the ammonia emission rate from field-applied pig manure is predicted using an artificial neural network (ANN) method, where the Michaelis-Menten equation is employed for the ammonia emission rate model. Two model parameters (total loss of ammonia emission rate and time to reach the half of the total emission rate) of the model are predicted using a feedforward-backpropagation ANN on the basis of the ALFAM (Ammonia Loss from Field-applied Animal Manure) database in Europe. The relative importance among 15 input variables influencing ammonia loss is identified using the weight partitioning method. As a result, the ammonia emission is influenced mush by the weather and the manure state.

  • Among high-tech products, the mobile phone has experienced a rapid rate of innovation and a shortening of its product life cycle. The shortened product life cycle poses major challenges to those involved in the creation of forecasting methods fundamental to strategic management and planning systems. This study examined whether the best model applies to the entire diffusion life span of a mobile phone. Mobile phone sales data from a specific mobile service provider in Korea from March of 2013 to August of 2014 were analyzed to compare the performance of two S-shaped diffusion models and two non-linear regression models, the Gompertz, logistic, Michaelis-Menten, and logarithmic models. The experimental results indicated that the logistic model outperforms the other three models over the fitted region of the diffusion. For forecasting, the logistic model outperformed the Gompertz model for the period prior to diffusion saturation, whereas the Gompertz model was superior after saturation approaches. This analysis may help those estimate the potential mobile phone market size and perform inventory and order management of mobile phones.

  • The recent investigation indicates that the kinetic constants for anionic ions were merely the result of ion exchange between the algae cell wall surface and the anionic ion. In this study, Zygnema sterile and Lepocinclism textra, floating flagellate alga as the dominant algae strains, were cultivated using HRABR(High Rate Algae Biomass Reactor) and the cultivation conditions were 24 hrs. and 12 hrs. irradiation and it was studied how this algal biomass acts on the biosorption mechanism of anionic N and P. Results are as follows : 1. Calculating the specific chl.-a growth rate using Michaelis-Menten model, the one of 24hrs. irradiation was about 55 times higher than the one of 12 hrs. irradiation 2. Calculating the specific chl.-a growth rate using Kuo model, the one of 24 hrs. irradiation was about 2.26 times higher than the one of 12 hrs. irradiation 3. Langmuir model can apply to the biosorption mechanism of anionic N and P in HRABP. 4. Regarding the chlorophyll-a concentration as unit weight of sorbent, the ion selectivity coefficients for N and P are as follows : $(NH_3-N)+(NO_3-N)$ in 24 hrs. irradiation ; 44.984 $PO_4-P$ in 24 hrs. irradiation ; 24.237 $(NH_3-N)+(NO_3-N)$ in 12 hrs. irradiation ; 1432.851 $PO_4-P$ in 12 hrs. irradiation ; 599.076

  • A model was developed to describe the microbial decontamination of diesel contaminated soil in a soil column. The biodegradation rate of diesel in nature depends on temperature and the pH of soil, availability of nutrients, oxygen and water. The soil moisture content is one of the essential factors because it characterizes the availability not only of water to microorganisms but also of oxygen and nutrient dissolved in soil. In this work, the rate of biodegradation was modeled by coupling Michaelis-Menten kinetics for the aqueous-phase solute with adsoption-desoption equation for diesel sorption and desorption from soil.

  • The fiffusion characteristics of substrate of varing biomass concentrations into and from Ca- alginate gel beads in well-stirred solutions were investigated. Ca-alginate gel beads were immobilized by Zymomonas mobilis or free from cells. The values of the diffusion coefficient of substrate were calculated by means of the method of Least squares and Random pore model. Reaction rates are expressed by the Michaelis-Menten type equation, and the results are compared with experimental data. Intraparticle effective diffusivity of substrate resistance on reaction by using immobilized Z.mobilis entrapped by Ca-alginated gel seemed to be restricted by cell density. The experimental data also indicated relationship between the effective diffusivity and the cell concentration used in the gel preparation.

  • The simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) process consists of concurrent enzymatic saccharification and fermentation. In the present cybernetic model, the saccharification process, which is based on the modified Michaelis-Menten kinetics and enzyme inhibition kinetics, was combined with the fermentation process, which is based on the Monod equation. The cybernetic modeling approach postulates that cells adapt to utilize the limited resources available to them in an optimal way. The cybernetic modeling was suitable for describing sequential growth on multiple substrates by Brettanomyces custersii, which is a glucose- and cellobiose-fermenting yeast. The proposed model was able to elucidate the SSF process in a systematic manner, and the performance was verified by previously published data.

  • Cell kinetics and the chemical mass action principle formulate the basis of immune system dynamics which may be synthesized mathematically as cascades of bilinear systems which are connected by nonlinear nondynamical terms. In this manner, a model for cell-mediated immune response (CMI) to tumor antigens and debris is developed. We also consider parametric control variables relevant to the latest experimental data, i.e., sigmoidal dose-response relationship and Michaelis-Menten dynamics. The preliminary results show that the parametric control variable is important in the destruction of tumors. As well as that, the exacerbation theory is a good method for tumor treatment. Finally, tumor control as an application of immunotherapy is analyzed from the basis established above.
