  • The electronic structures and magnetism of MgCCo$_3$(001) surface terminated by the plane with the MgCo-Term (Mg, Co terminated) and the CCo-Term (C, Co terminated) were investigated using the all-electron full-potential linearized augmented Plane-wave method. For the MgCo-Term, the magnetic moment of Co atom of the surface is strongly enhanced to 1.00$\mu$$_{B}$, while the magnetic moment of Co atom of the subsurface is similar to that of the center layers. For the CCo-Term, the magnetic moments of Co atoms are enhanced to 0.75 and 0.80$\mu$$_{B}$ for the surface and subsurface layers, respectively. The magnetic moments of C and Mg atoms are coupled antiferromagnetically to that of the neighbour Co atoms. From the calculated density of states, we see that the enhancements of magnetic moments of Co atoms are closely related to localization of the Co-3d states.

  • In this study, chemical compositions - holocellulose, lignin and monomeric sugars - were characterized with two poplar wood cell walls, one of which was grown at normal condition (CPW) and the other was genetically modified by antisence suppression of CCoAOMT gene expression (ACPW). Milled wood lignins were isolated from CPW and ACPW and subjected to methoxyl group, DFRC, Py-GC/MS, GPC, $^{13}C$-NMR analysis, respectively. There were few differences in holocellulose contents in both cell walls, which were determined to 81.6% in CPW and to 82.3% in ACPW. However, lignin contents in ACPW was clearly decreased by the suppression of CCoAOMT gene expression. In CPW 21.7% of lignin contents was determined, while lignin contents in ACPW was lowered to 18.3%. The relative poor solubility of ACPW in alkali solution could be attributed to the reduction of lignin content. The glucose contents of CPW and ACPW were measured to 511.0 mg/g and 584.8 mg/g and xylose contents 217.8 mg/g and 187.5 mg/g, respectively, indicating that suppression of CCoAOMT gene expression could be also influenced to the formation of monomeric sugar compositions. In depth investigation for milled wood lignin (MWL) isolated from both samples revealed that the methoxyl contents at ACPW was decreased by 7% in comparison to that of CPW, which were indirectly evidenced by $^{13}C$-NMR spectra and Py-GC/MS. According to the data from Py-GC/MS S/G ratios of lignin in CPW and ACPW were determined to 0.59 and 0.44, respectively. As conclusive remark, the biosynthesis of syringyl unit could be further influenced by antisense suppression of CCoAOMT during phenylpropanoid pathway in the plant cell wall rather than that of guaiacyl unit.

  • In this study, the anti-inflammatory effects of Lespedeza cuneata extract on macrophages and wound-healing in wound-induced animal experiments were investigated. In an anti-inflammatory test, 0.1 mg/mL of Lespedeza cuneata extract did not affect growth of RAW 264.7 cells, and Lespedeza cuneata extract suppressed nitric oxide (NO) generation from inflammation-induced macrophages in a concentration-dependent manner. Wounds on the skin of rats were treated with vehicle containing Lespedeza cuneata extract (SSP), vehicle (SCO), and commercial ointment (CCO). The wound and scar sizes in the SSP group were significantly reduced in comparison to the SCO and CCO groups (P<0.05). The epidermis and dermis of the SSP group also recovered faster than the SCO group based on Masson's trichrome staining. The gene expression levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) decreased and transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-${\beta}1$) increased in wound tissue from the SSP group compared to that from the SCO group. These results show that Lespedeza cuneata extract accelerates wound-healing through anti-inflammatory activity and induction of collagen regeneration as well as reduces the scar area surrounding wounds. Accordingly, Lespedeza cuneata extract could be useful as a cosmeceutical in the cosmetic industry.

The activity of the proteinasc I washigher about two fold than that of proteinase 11. The optimai, reaction pH of proteinaseI and I1 wcre found to be 7-1 1.5 and 7-9. respectively. Proteinase I1 was more stable andactive than proteinase I at pH ranges around 3 to 5. The optimal te~tlperature of proteinaseI and I1 were 502. The temperature stabilitl of proteinase I1 was Inore stable thanproteinase 1 at temperature range around 30-quot;~A. ctivities of proteinase I and I1 graduallydeclined above $30^{\circ}$C and 45C. respectively. Proteinasc 1 was more active than proteinaseI1 at salt concentration range around 25-3500. The K,,, values of casein and soy proteinfor proteinase I were 6.89 mglml and 3.98 mglml. In case of proteinase 11. they were 9.00mgiml anti 11.44 111g/ml. respectively. The activity of the crudc enzyme was increased by1 rnM Pb(CH3COO). but was decreased by 5 n1M and 10 rnM of HgS04 and ZnS04. Thetwo proteinases produced amino acids and peptides from the soybean protein. The peptideswere digested into amino acids. Both protcinases were found to be the main enzymes thatproduced amino acids which make the main taste of traditional Korean soy sauce.al Korean soy sauce.
