Effect of Aluminum, Manganese, and Zirconium on the Content of Nickel in Molten Magnesium (마그네슘용탕의 니켈 함량에 미치는 알루미늄, 망간 및 지르코늄의 영향)

  • Variations of nickel contents and microstructures in molten magnesium alloys on the addition of aluminum, zirconium, and manganese have been investigated. Specimens were prepared by melting under $SF_6$ and $CO_2$ atmosphere and casting into a disc of 29 mm diameter with 7~10 mm thickness from the melt acquired at the top of crucible. Before casting, the molten metal was stirred for 3 minutes after each addition of alloying elements and maintained for 30 minutes for settling down. Results showed that zirconium did not significantly affect the content of nickel while aluminum remarkably reduced it by forming $Al_3Ni_2$ phase. When manganese are added to Mg-1wt%Ni alloy along with aluminum, both elements remarkably reduced the content of nickel. The addition of 1.5 wt% manganese to Mg-1wt%Ni alloy containing aluminum further reduced the content of nickel by more than 30%, during which an additional intermetallic phase $Al_{10}Mn_3Ni$ was precipitated in the molten magnesium.

Gas Absorption and Release Properties of Zn(BH4)2 and MgH2-Zn(BH4)2-Ni-Ti-Fe Alloy

  • $Zn(BH_4)_2$ was prepared by milling $ZnCl_2$ and $NaBH_4$ in a planetary ball mill in an Ar atmosphere, and XRD analysis, SEM observation, FT-IR analysis, DTA, and TGA were performed for synthesized $Zn(BH_4)_2$ samples. 90 wt% $MgH_2$+1.67 wt% $Zn(BH_4)_2(+NaCl)$+5 wt% Ni+1.67 wt% Ti+1.67 wt% Fe (named $90MgH_2+1.67Zn(BH_4)_2(+NaCl)$+5Ni+1.67Ti+1.67Fe) samples were also prepared by milling in a planetary ball mill in an $H_2$ atmosphere. The gas absorption and release properties of the $Zn(BH_4)_2(+NaCl)$ and $90MgH_2+1.67Zn(BH_4)_2(+NaCl)_2(+NaCl)$+5Ni+1.67Ti+1.67Fe samples were investigated. An FT-IR analysis showed that $Zn(BH_4)_2$ formed in the $Zn(BH_4)_2(+NaCl)$ samples prepared by milling $ZnCl_2$ and $NaBH_4$. At the first cycle at $320^{\circ}C$, $90MgH_2+1.67Zn(BH_4)_2(+NaCl)$+5Ni+1.67Ti+1.67Fe absorbed 2.95 wt% H for 2.5 min and 4.93 wt% H for 60 min under 12 bar $H_2$, and released 1.46 wt% H for 10 min and 4.57 wt% H for 60 min under 1.0 bar $H_2$.

A Study on the Diffusion Bonding of Mg-Ni under Low Eutectic Temperature (최소 공정온도하에서 Mg-Ni의 열확산 접합에 관한 연구)

  • Diffusion bonding is a technique that has the ability to join materials with minimum change in joint micro-structure and deformation of the component. The quality of the joints produced was examined by metallurgical characterization and the joint micro-structure developed across the diffusion bonding was related to changes in mechanical properties as a function of the bonding time. An increase in bonding time also resulted in an increase in the micro-hardness of the joint interface from 55 VHN to 180 VHN, The increase in hardness was attributed to the formation of intermetallic compounds which increased in concentration as bonding time increased.

  • 1960년 Au-Si계 합금에서 처음으로 비정질상이 급속 응고법에 의해 보고된 이래/sup 1)/ 지난 40년 간 많은 합금계에서 비정질상이 보고되어졌다. 대표적으로 Fe-, Ni-, Co기 합금 등 많은 합금계에서 비정질상이 보고되었으나, 비정질상의 형성을 위해서는 약 105 K/s이상의 높은 냉각속도를 필요로 하였다. 1980년대 수백 K/s의 낮은 냉각속도 하에서도 비정질상이 형성될 수 있는 다원계 합금(multi-component alloy)이 Mg-Ln-(Ni, Cu, Zn), Ln-Al-TM 합금에서 보고되어 졌으나 많은 관심을 받지 못하다가 1993년 Zr-Ti-Ni-Cu-Be 합금에서 수 ㎝ 크기의 비정질합금 제조가 보고되면서 전 세계적으로 많은 관심을 받게 되었다. Zr-Ti-Ni-Cu-Be계 벌크 비정질 합금이 보고된 후 Zr-(Nb,Pd)-Al-TM, Pd-Cu-Ni-P, Fe-Co-Zr-Mo-W-B, Ti-Zr-Ni-Cu-Sn등 여러 합금계에서 벌크 비정질 합금이 보고되었다. (중략)

PbSCC of Ni-base Alloys in PbO-added Pure Water

  • The effect of annealing on the pitting corrosion resistance of anodized Al-Mg alloy (AA5052) processed by equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) was investigated by electrochemical techniques in a solution containing 0.2 mol/L of $AlCl_3$ and also by surface analysis. The Al-Mg alloy was annealed at a fixed temperature between 473 and 573 K for 120 min in air after ECAP. Anodizing was conducted for 40 min at $100-400A/m^2$ at 293 K in a solution containing 1.53 mol/L of $H_2SO_4$ and 0.0185 mol/L of $Al_2(SO_4)_3$. The internal stress generated in anodic oxide films during anodization was measured with a strain gauge to clarify the effect of ECAP on the pitting corrosion resistance of anodized Al-Mg alloy. The time required to initiate the pitting corrosion of anodized Al-Mg alloy was shorter in samples subjected to ECAP, indicating that ECAP decreased the pitting corrosion resistance. However, the pitting corrosion resistance was greatly improved by annealing after ECAP. The time required to initiate pitting corrosion increased with increasing annealing temperature. The strain gauge attached to Al-Mg alloy revealed that the internal stress present in the anodic oxide films was compressive stress, and that the stress was larger with ECAP than without. The compressive internal stress gradually decreased with increasing annealing temperature. Scanning electron microscopy showed that cracks occurred in the anodic oxide film on Al-Mg alloy during initial corrosion and that the cracks were larger with ECAP than without. The ECAP process of severe plastic deformation produces large internal stresses in the Al-Mg alloy; the stresses remain in the anodic oxide films, increasingthe likelihood of cracks. It is assumed that the pitting corrosion is promoted by these cracks as a result of the higher internal stress resulting from ECAP. The improvement in the pitting corrosion resistance of anodized AlMg alloy as a result of annealing appears to be attributable to a decrease in the internal stresses in anodic oxide films

Wear Resistance of Al Alloy Matrix Composites Using Porous Iron Aluminide-$SiC_p$ Preforms (Iron Aluminide-$SiC_p$ 혼합 예비성형체를 사용한 Al합금기 복합재료의 내마모 특성)

  • Porous hybrid preforms were fabricated by reactive sintering using the compacts consisting of SiC particles, Fe and Al powders. Squeeze casting processing was employed to produce the composite in which the matrix phase is Al-Si7Mg. The microstructural change and wear resistance of the composites were investigated in terms of an amount of SiC particles. The wear loss was increased with increasing the contact pressure in the alloy containing SiC particles coated with Cu. The most drastic change was found to the specimen tested at 2.5 MPa of contact pressure. Concerning the alloys containing SiC particles coated with Ni-P, a drastic increase in the wear loss exhibited at 2 MPa of contact pressure in those alloys containing 4 and 8 wt. % of SiC particles coated with Ni-P. In the alloy containing 16 wt. % a proportional increase in wear loss was observed to the change of contact pressure. With respecting to the sliding velocity, the wear loss of the alloy containing SiC particles coated with Cu increased at the initial stage of wear process and then decreased. Similar result was found in the alloys containing SiC particles coated with Ni-P. On the basis of the present results obtained, it was found that wear resistance of the alloys tested was improved to show in the order of the alloy reinforced by coated SiC particles > by uncoated SiC particles > by intermetallic compound without SiC particles.

The Performance of NI/$MgAl_2O_4$ Coated Metal Monolith in Natural Gas Steam Reforming for Hydrogen Production (NI/$MgAl_2O_4$코팅된 금속 모노리스 촉매의 수소 생산을 위한 천연가스 수증기 개질 반응특성에 관한 연구)

  • The metal monolith catalyst coated with 15wt% Ni/$MgAl_2O_4$ is applied to the natural gas steam reforming for hydrogen production. To address the improvement of adherence between metal monolith and catalyst coating layer, the pre-calcination temperature as well as the coating conditions of $Al_2O_3$ sol are optimized. When the Fe-Cr alloy monolith is pre-calcined at $900^{\circ}C$ for 6 h, $Al_2O_3$ layer was formed uniformly on the entire surface of the metal substrate. It is seen that the formation of $Al_2O_3$ layer on the monolith surface is essential for the uniform coating of $Al_2O_3$ sol onto the monolith substrate. The monolith catalyst coated with 10wt% $Al_2O_3$ sol shows high $CH_4$ conversion and good thermal stability as compared with the monolith catalyst without $Al_2O_3$ sol coating under severe reaction conditions with high GHSV of 30,000 $h^{-1}$ at $700^{\circ}C$. In addition, the metal monolith catalyst shows higher catalytic activity and better thermal conductivity than 15wt% Ni/$MgAl_2O_4$ pellet catalyst.

  • Mg and Mg-based alloys are promising hydrogen storage alloys for renewable clean energy applications. It is a lightweight and low cost material with high hydrogen storage capacity. However, commercial applications of the Mg hydride are currently hindered by its high absorption/desorption temperature, and very slow reaction kinetics. In this work, we aim to study the absorption properties of the $Mg_2Ni$-5mass% Nb composite prepared by mechanical alloying under hydrogen. The absorption capacity of the sample is found to be about 3.0 wt.% at T=573 K and P=1.0 MPa. The absorption characteristics observed have been compared with those of the prepared $Mg_2Ni$.

  • The following work examines the growth rate and microstructure of the $AI_2O_3$-composite formation by melt oxdation of pentad AI-alloys. The I weight % of each metal elements Cu and Ni were added to AI-IMg-3Si-3Zn and AI-IMg- 3Si-5Zn alloys. The diffenent pentad AI-alloys were oxidized 20 hours long at 1373K and 1473K. The oxidation rates were determined by observing the weight gain. The macro- and microstructure of formed oxide layer were examined by optical microscopy. The AI-IMg-3Si-5Zn-lCu alloy revealed the best oxidation behavior, but formedoxide layer was inhomogeneous.The oxidation rate were accelerated, and the uniform growth of the oxide layer with fine microstructure were obtained by putting a thin layer of $SiO_2$ on the surface of the alloy.

Pulsed laser surface modification for heat treatment and nano-texturing on biometal surface

  • The laser surface modification has been reported for its functional applications for improving tribological performance, wear resistance, hardness, and corrosion property. In most of these applications, continuous wave lasers and pulsed lasers were used for surface melting, cladding, alloying. Since flexibility in processing, refinement of microstructure and controlling the surface properties, technology utilizing lasers has been used in a number of fields. Especially, femtosecond laser has great benefits compared with other lasers because its pulsed width is much shorter than characteristic time of thermal diffusion, which leads to diminish heat affected zone. Moreover, laser surface engineering has been highlighted as an effective tool for micro/nano structuring of materials in the bio application field. In this study, we applied femtosecond and nanosecond pulsed laser to treat biometals, such as Mg, Mg alloy, and NiTi alloy, by heating to improve corrosion properties and functionalize their surface controlling cell response as implantable biomedical devices.
