Various functional and useful components in Portulaca oleracea were extracted with ethanol and the optimum solvent conditions were set by monitoring of response surface methodology(RSM). A central composite design for optimization was applied to investigate the effects of the three independent variables of extraction temperature, ethanol concentration, and extraction time, on dependent variables including total phenolics, electron-donating ability, brown clolor and total flavonoids of Portulaca oleracea. The content of total phenol was essentially unaffected by extraction time or extraction temperature, but it was highly influenced by ethanol concentration. The maximum total phenol content was 31.70mg/mL obtained at 45.84% of ethanol concentration, $79.66^{\circ}C$, and after 2.67hr of extraction. Electron-donating ability (EDA) was affected by ethanol concentration and the maximum EDA was 74.67mg/mL at 52.95% ethanol concentration, $52.33^{\circ}C$ and 4.84hr of extration time. The browning color was rarely affected by extraction time but, it was highly influenced by ethanol concentration and extraction temperature. The maximum extent of browning color was obtained at 97.75% of ethanol concentraion, $65.88^{\circ}C$ and 2.93hr of extraction time. The content of total flavonoid was significantly influenced by extraction time, and the maximum total flavonoid level was 58.28mg/mL obtained at 96.62% ethanol concentration, $61.87^{\circ}C$ after 3.70hr of extraction. As a result, The optimal conditions for effective extraction were predicted as follows, 70.3% of ethanol concentration, $62.1^{\circ}C$ of extraction temperature and 3.3hr of extraction time.
In this study, polyphenols were extracted from Angelica, which are known to have a high antioxidant content and the extraction process was optimized using the response surface methodology. The extraction yield and the total polyphenols were set as response values for the methodology. Quantitative factors in the extraction process were the extraction time, volume ratio of alcohol/ultrapure water, and extraction temperature. When considering both the main and interaction effects, the greatest influence factor on the extraction yield and total polyphenols was the extraction time. The optimum extraction time and temperature and alcohol/ultrapure water volume ratio for angelica were 2.8 h, $56.6^{\circ}C$ and 64.0 vol% respectively. The extraction yield and total polyphenols when using the conditions were calculated to be 24.6% and 8.76 mg GAE/g. respectively. Determination coefficients of regression equations for the extraction yield and total polyphenols were 81.4 and 75.4%, respectively. Also the overall satisfaction level was found to be 0.80 and the significance was confirmed within 5%.
Steam explosion was applied to extract phenolic compounds from oak wood (Quercus mongolica). The effects of three independent factors (ethanol concentration, extraction temperature and extraction time) on the total phenolic content, DPPH radical scavenging activity, and antimicrobial activity from the steam exploded oak wood were optimized using response surface methodology (RSM). The independent variables were coded at three levels and their actual values were selected on the basis of preliminary experimental results. The following optimal extraction conditions were selected: ethanol concentration 82.0%, extraction temperature $71.7^{\circ}C$, and extraction time 60.5 min for total phenolic content; ethanol concentration 78.3%, extraction temperature $70.3^{\circ}C$, and extraction time 57.6 min for DPPH radical scavenging activity; ethanol concentration 80.6%, extraction temperature $68.4^{\circ}C$, and extraction time 59.0 min for antimicrobial activity. The experimental values agreed with those were predicted within confidence intervals indicating the suitability of RSM in optimizing the ethanol extraction of phenolic compounds from the steam exploded oak wood. Under the optimized conditions, the experimental value of the total phenolic content was 111.8 mg GAE/g dry steam exploded oak wood, DPPH free radical scavenging activity was 65.7%, and antimicrobial activity was 17.0 mm, and those are reasonably close to the predicted values (109.2 mg GAE/g dry steam exploded oak wood, 62.3% and 15.9 mm, respectively).

In this paper, we present to evaluate physiological activity of Asparagopsis armata extraction. After extraction with Asparagopsis armata using hydrothermal and supercritical carbon dioxide, various physiological activities were examined. The total concentration of polyphenol compounds was determined to be 18.85 mg/g of hydrothermal Asparagopsis armata extraction and 14.74 mg/g of supercritical Asparagopsis armata extraction. In DPPH radical scavenging assay, ascorbic acid was used as positive antioxidant control. In ABTS radical scavenging assay, ascorbic acid was used as positive antioxidant control. The percentage of inhibition and IC50 were measured. The IC50 of Asparagopsis armata extraction is 261.44ppm and the IC50 of supercritical Asparagopsis armata extraction is 153.98 ppm. The elastase inhibitory assay showed concentration dependence and the IC50 of hydrothermal Asparagopsis armata extraction is 3387 ppm and the IC50 of supercritical Asparagopsis armata extraction is higher than 2500 ppm. In mushroom tyrosinase inhibition experiments, tyrosinase inhibition's IC50 of supercritical Asparagopsis armata extraction was 248.06. In the SOD-like experiments, the concentration-dependent results were showed and IC50 of hydrothermal Asparagopsis armata extraction is 845.29 ppm. In the antimicrobial experiments, maximum clear zones of supercritical Asparagopsis armata extraction represented 23.00 mm in Propionibacterium acnes. In the other hand, in experiments with the same conditions, hydrothermal Asparagopsis armata extraction had no effect in all strains.

In an attempt to develop natural seasoning materials by use of shellfishes and crustaceans, contents of taste components such as amino acids, nucleotide and its derivatives, the extractability of oyster (Crassostrea gigas), sea mussel(Mytilus coruscus) and crab(Portanus tribuerculata) were investigated. As a result of chemical analysis and sensory evaluation, the optimum condition of extraction could be concluded as extracting fresh or frozen raw materials for about 40 min. at $95^{\circ}C$ with 1.5 to 2 times of water by volume. The contents of free amino acids in the extractions were much in sequence as crab(1,886 mg%), mussel(765 mg%) and oyster(554 mg%), and the dominant amino acids in each extracts were identified as glutamic acid, alanine, glycine, proline and arginine in oyster, threonine, alanine, arginine, glycine and glutamic acid in mussel, arginine, proline, lysine, alanine and threonine in crab respectively. In addition, the major nucleotides affecting as taste enhancer of each extracts were estimated as inosine in oyster and crab, and inosine monophosphate in mussel respectively.
We investigated the effect of dry grinding of laterite on the extraction of nickel and cobalt. The major chemical compositions of the sample for this work were $SiO_2$, $Fe_2O_3$ and MgO. The sample contained 0.81% Ni and 0.02% Co. The major minerals of the sample were lizardite and quartz with minor amounts of forsterite and enstatite. The mean particle size, specific surface area and density of the ground sample decreased with increasing grinding time, while the amorphization of lizardite increased as identified by XRD analysis. The grinding enabled the extraction ratio of Ni and Co to increase by the breakdown of Mg-OH bonding in the lizardite structure. However, physical properties of quartz were not changed by grinding. The extraction ratio of Ni and Co increased with increasing grinding time. Approximately 80% of Ni and Co were extracted regardless of the kind of acid solutions when the sample was ground for 60 minutes.
The extraction of ginseng saponins with near critical or supercritical ammonia(SCF-NH$_3$) was carried out at 80$^{\circ}C$-160$^{\circ}C$ and ammonia densities of 339.8-525 $mg/cm^3$. In order to evaluate brownish color of white ginseng extracts, a spetrophotometric method was applied in ultraviolet and visible range. The extractibilities of ginseonoside $Rb_1$, -$Rb_2$, -Rc, -Rd, -Re, -Rf, $-Rg_1$, and $-Rg_2$ were determined by high performance liquid choromatography. The best extractability was 7.36% at 133$^{\circ}C$ and 403 $\pm$ 24.605 $mg/cm^3$. In the case of the high extraction temperature, it is thought that extraction times can be reduced and the selectivity of protopanaxatriol can be increased. The brownish color of extracts is affected by temperature and extractability. When extraction temperature is between 132$^{\circ}C$ and 140$^{\circ}C$, it is shown that the range is the retrograde region where extractablility decrease with increasing temperature.
Solvent extraction of alkali metal and alkaline earth metal cations by mono-crown ether(benzo-15-crown-5) and bis-(crown ether)s(ethylenediamine bis(4'-formyl benzo-15-crown-5)) containing benzo-15-crown-5 moieties were investigated with water-chloroform system at $25^{\circ}C$. The order of the extraction equilibrium constants($K_e$) and the complexation constants($K_c$) for the alkali metal and alkaline earth metal cations with mono-crown ether and bis-(crown ether)s were Ca(II)>Na(I)>Sr(II)>K(I)>Mg(II)>Rb(I) and Sr(II)>Ca(II)>K(I)>Rb(I)>Mg(II)>Na(I) respectively. These results were explained in terms of the size effect of metal cation and electron density effect. Also, the bis-(crown ether)s was found to extract metal cations more effectively than the corresponding mono-crown ether.

This study investigated changes in phenolic contents of different parts of Rhus verniciflua Stokes (RV) according to extraction conditions. Bark and xylem parts of RV were extracted at 80, 100, 120, 140, and $160^{\circ}C$ for 1, 3, and 5 h, respectively. Major phenolic compounds (gallic acid, protocatechuic acid, fustin, fisetin, sulfuretin, and butein) of RV were analyzed. The gallic acid, fisetin, sulfuretin, and butein contents significantly increased as extraction temperature increased. Protocatechuic acid and fustin contents increased as increasing extraction temperature to $120^{\circ}C$ and decreased afterward. The gallic acid, protocatechuic acid, and butein contents of bark were higher than those of xylem extracts. The optimal extraction conditions of gallic acid, protocatechuic acid, fustin, fisetin, sulfuretin, and butein were $160^{\circ}C/3h$ (380.22 mg%), $120^{\circ}C/1h$ (9.25 mg%), $100^{\circ}C/3h$ (206.97 mg%), $140^{\circ}C/5h$ (93.84 mg%), $140^{\circ}C/5h$ (16.07 mg%) and $160^{\circ}C/5h$ (1.49 mg%), respectively. These results suggest that the optimum extraction temperature and time considering RV extraction yield and cost are $140^{\circ}C$ and 3 h, respectively.
Antioxidant activity, total phenolic, total flavonoid compounds and cytotoxicity to cancer cell lines of propolis extracts from two extraction methods were investigated in this study. Propolis was collected from Phayao province and extracted with 70% ethanol using maceration and sonication techniques. The antioxidant activity was evaluated by DPPH assay. Total phenolic and flavonoid compounds were also determined. Moreover, the cytotoxicity of propolis was evaluated using MTT assay. The percentage propolis yield after extraction using maceration (18.1%) was higher than using sonication (15.7%). Nevertheless, antioxidant and flavonoid compounds of the sonication propolis extract were significant greater than using maceration. Propolis extract from sonication showed antioxidant activity by $3.30{\pm}0.15$ mg gallic acid equivalents/g extract. Total phenolic compound was $18.3{\pm}3.30$ mg gallic acid equivalents/g extract and flavonoid compound was $20.49{\pm}0.62$ mg quercetin/g extract. Additionally, propolis extracts from two extraction methods demonstrated the inhibitory effect on proliferation of A549 and HeLa cancer cell lines at 24, 48 and 72 hours in a dose-dependent manner. These results are of interest for the selection of the most appropriate method for preparation of propolis extracts as potential antioxidant and anticancer agents.
