  • This paper shows the behaviors of macro- and micro-structures and mechanical properties for specimen's welding region welded by FSW. according to welding conditions with 5mm thickness aluminum 5083O alloy plate. It apparently results in defect-free weld zone in case traverse speed was changed to 32 mm/min under conditions of anti-clockwise direction and tool rotation speed such as 800 and 1250 rpm with tool's pin diameter of 5 ${\Phi}mm$ and shoulder diameter of 20 ${\Phi}mm$, pin length of 4.5 mm and tilting angle of $2^{\circ}$. The ultimate stress of ${\sigma}_T=331$ MPa and the yield point of 147 MPa are obtained at the condition of the travel speed of 32 mm/min with the tool rotation speed of 1250 rpm. There is neither voids nor cracks on bended surface of $180^{\circ}$ after bending test. The improvement of toughness after impact test was found. The lower rotating and traverse speed became, the higher were yield point, maximum stress and elongation(%) with the stresses and the elongation(%) versus the traverse speed diagram. Vickers hardness for cross section of welding zone were also presented. The typical macro-structures such as dynamically recrystallized zone, thermo-mechanically affected zone and heat affected zone and the micro-structures of the transverse cross-section were also showed. However, the author found out that the region of 6mm far away from shoulder circumference was affected by friction heat comprehensively, that is, hardness softened and that part of micro-structures were re-solid-solution or recrystallized, the author also knew that there is no mechanically deformation on heat affected zone but there are the flow of plastic deformation of $45^{\circ}$ direction on thermo-mechanically affected zone and the segregation of Al-Mg on nugget. The solid solution wt(%) of parent material as compared against of friction stir welded zone was comprehensively changed.

  • This paper describes an overview of the thixoforming and thixomolding processes. Semi-solid metalworking (SSM), which is called the thixoforming process of aluminium materials, incorporates the elements of both casting and for the manufacture of near net shape parts. The SSM has some advantages such as net shape or near net shape manufacturing, the ability to form thin walls, excellent surface finish, tight tolerance, and excellent dimensional precision. The thixomolding process of Mg alloy (AZ9l) is a combination of two technologies both conventional die casting and plastic injection molding. The feed material used is a machined chip with a geometry of approximately 1 mm square and a length of 2~3 mm. The semi-solid forming (SSF) of high quality aluminium and magnesium parts will be established in the automotive and electronic industry, in the future. The hybrid method of casting/forging has been caused attention. This process uses a preformed material made by casting instead of the wrought material and finishes it by a single forging process. This process is expected to lower costs without sacrificing the mechanical and finishes it by a single forging process. The process is expected to lower costs without sacrificing the mechanical properties. The authors, intending that the casting/forging process contributes to a reduction in production cost of aluminum automotive parts in Korea, describes the feature of the casting/forging process, aluminum alloys suitable for the cast preform, microstructure and mechanical properties of the cast preform, application examples of cast/forging, and further study.

  • Al-2%Si-2%Mg alloy containing SiC particle in 20, $70{\mu}m$ were prepared by mean of squeeze casting with various pressure 50, 100, 150 and 220MPa respectively. The specimens were made by casting into $50{\Phi}{\times}100{\ell}$ mold under various squeeze conditions(pressures, pressurizing temperature, particle sizes). Mechanical properties(hardness, tensile strength, elongation and wear characteristics) were evaluated at room temperature with those various fabrication factors. It became feasible to make favorable Al-SiCp composite free from casting defects by the injection of Ar gas during melting and 100MPa pressure squeeze casting. However, pressure of 50MPa was not sufficient to avoid completely porosity formation as a result of precessing and shrinkage during solidification. As the particle size is smaller and the squeeze pressure is higher, the hardness and tensile strength at room temperature are higher. Cell size became smaller gradually with increase of squeeze pressure. With increase of squeeze pressure(MPa), wear behaviors of those composites were changed from adhesive into abrasive wear, and the tendency of above behavior became outstanding with increasing sliding speed. The chemical reaction(4Al+3SiC${\rightarrow}$$Al_4C_3+3Si$) is more accelerated at interface between SiCp and matrix with increase of squeeze pressure. Therefore $Al_4C_3$ intercompound and Si peak intensity is increased at interface.

  • To evaluate the effect of manganese on the respiratory system, we investigated the respiratory symptoms of 63 male workers exposed to, fume containing manganese (Mn), iron (Fe) and silica (Si), and compared them with those of 66 male workers not exposed to the fume in a manganese alloy smelting factory. The prevalence ratios of the seven respiratory symptoms were not different between two groups. The presence of any respiratory symptom was not related with the age, duration of employment, smoking status of workers, and exposure to fume. In furnace workers, it was not related with the airborne Mn, Fe, and Si concentration in the total or respirable fume. Airborne Mn concentrations of all 4 furnaces in the respirable fume were below $1mg/m^3$. There were two suspicious cases of pneumoconiosis among furnace workers and one definite case(1/2) among casting workers who were not exposed to fume. The above results suggest that the exposure to the low airborne Mn concentration is not related with respiratory symptoms and pneumoconiosis. However, it is necessary to study the respiratory effects of Mn using the symptom questionnaire with consideration of the severity and persistence, of symptoms and the time interval from exposure.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the Co-60 γ irradiation on the osseointegration. 2.0 mm titanium alloy screw implants(Sankin Industry Co. Ltd., Japan) were placed in the tibial metaphysis of the rabbits, bilaterally. The mean length of the implants was 6.0 mm. The right tibia was irradiated with a single dose of 15Gy from 60Co teletherapic machine at 5th postoperative day. The experimental group was irradiated tibia. The control group was nonirradiated tibia. To observe the phase of bone formation, the bone labeling by intramuscular injection of 20mg/Kg of Tetracycline, Calcein, Alizarin red S, was performed. The rabbits were sacrificed on the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th week and the tibia including implants were taken, and then the specimens were examined by the microradiography, light microscopy, and fluorescent microscopy. The obtained results were as follows: 1. There were connective tissue between bone and titanium at 1st week, in both group. Especially, the many empty lacunae without nucleus and obscure cytoplasm in experimental group, were observed. 2. The osteons were observed at 4th week in control group, and at 6th week in experimental group. The bone formation in experimental group was retarded as compared to the control group. 3. In fluorescent microscopy, bone labelling band was observed as linear, arc or concentric shape. Occasionary interrupted labelling band was observed, which is demonstrated bone remodeling. 4. In microradiographic examination, the radiolucent image was found between bone and implant with widening of bone marrow spaces as compared to the control group.

  • Degradable implants have been in use for bone surgery for decades. However, degradable metal implants are one of the new research areas of biomaterials science. Magnesium has good biocompatibility due to its low toxicity, and it is a corroding, i.e. dissolvable, metal. Furthermore, magnesium is needed in human body, and naturally found in bone tissue. There have been some published reports also asserting the potential bone cell activation or bone healing effect of high magnesium ion concentrations. The classic method for achieving intertransverse process fusion involves autogenous iliac crest bone graft. Several investigations have been performed to enhance this type of autograft fusion. However, there is no research which has been undertaken to investigate the efficiency of pure magnesium particles in posterolateral spinal fusion. In this study, corrosion behavior of magnesium metal at the bone interface, the possibility of new bone cell formation and the degree of effectiveness in producing intertransverse process lumbar fusion in a sheep model have been investigated. Cortical bone screws were machined from magnesium alloy AZ31 extruded rod and implanted to hip-bones of sheep via surgery. Three months after surgery, the bone segments carrying these screws were removed from the sacrificed animals. Samples were sectioned to reveal Mg/bone interfaces and investigated using optical microscope, SEM-EDS and radiography. Optical and SEM images showed that there was a significant amount of corrosion on the magnesium screw. The elemental mapping results indicate, due to the presence of calcium and phosphorus elements, that there exists new bone formation at the interface. Furthermore, sixteen sheep were subjected to intertransverse process spinal fusions with pedicle screw fixation at various locations along their spines. Each animal was treated with 5cc autograft bone at one fusion level and 1cc magnesium+5cc autograft bone at the other. Six months after surgery, bone formation was evaluated by gross inspection and palpation, and radiological, histological, scanning electron microscopic and x-ray diffraction analyses. It may be stated that the potential for using useful corrosion of magnesium alloys in medical applications is expected to be significant.

  • Friction stir welding is a solid-state joining process and is useful for joining dissimilar metal sheets. In this study, the experimental conditions of the friction stir welding were determined by the two-way factorial design to evaluate the characteristics of the dissimilar friction stir welding of AZ31 and AZ61 magnesium alloys. The levels of rotation speed and welding speed, which are welding variables, were 1000, 2000, 3000 rpm and 100, 200, 300 mm/min, respectively. From the results, the greater the rotation speed and the lower the welding speed of the tool were, the greater the tensile strength of the welded part was. The contribution of the welding speed of the tool is larger than that of the rotation speed of the tool. In addition, the optimal conditions for tensile strength in the dissimilar friction stir joint were predicted to be the rotation speed of 3000 rpm and welding speed of 100 mm/min, and the tensile strength under the optimal conditions was estimated to be $214{\pm}6.57Mpa$ with 99% reliability.

  • The mechanical properties and microstructures of Aluminum 6056 alloys were investigated for their use in the fabrication of a piton block. The EN-AW6056 alloys exhibited a tensile strength of 375 MPa for a solution treatment temperature of $550^{\circ}C$ for 2 h followed by an aging treatment at $190^{\circ}C$ for 4 h. The microstructures of the heat treated specimen showed that the $Mg_2Si$ phase with a size of 3~5 um was dispersed throughout the aluminum matrix when the heat treatment was done. Moreover, in order to identify the forgeability of the specimen, upsetting tests were done. For up to 80 % of the upsetting ratio, the specimen maintained its original shape, and at above 80 % of the upsetting ratio, the specimen underwent crack development. The specimen was successfully forged without any defects with the examined material conditions. The material conditions together with the forging conditions are discussed in terms of the microstructures and mechanical properties.
