  • We report on characteristics of specially designed inductively-coupled-plasma chemical vapor deposition (ICP-CVD) system for top-emitting organic light emitting diodes (TOLEDs). Using high-density plasma on the order of $10^{11}$ electrons/$cm^3$ generated by linear-type antennas connected in parallel and specially designed substrate cooling system, a 100 nm-thick transparent $SiN_{x}$ passivation layer was deposited on thin Mg-Ag cathode layer at substrate temperature below $50\;^{\circ}C$ without a noticeable plasma damage. In addition, substrate-mask chucking system equipped with a mechanical mask aligner enabled us to pattern the $SiN_x$ passivation layer without conventional lithography processes. Even at low substrate temperature, a $SiN_x$ passivation layer prepared by ICP-CVD shows a good moisture resistance and transparency of $5{\times}10^{-3}g/m^2/day$ and 92 %, respectively. This indicates that the ICP-CVD system is a promising methode to substitute conventional plasma enhanced CVD (PECVD) in thin film passivation process.

  • A $\beta$-glucosidase from the algal lytic bacterium Sinorhizobium kostiense AFK-13, grown in complex media containing cellobiose, was purified to homogeneity by successive ammonium sulfate precipitation, and anion-exchange and gel-filtration chromatographies. The enzyme was shown to be a monomeric protein with an apparent molecular mass of 52 kDa and isoelectric point of approximately 5.4. It was optimally active at pH 6.0 and $40^{\circ}C$ and possessed a specific activity of 260.4 U/mg of protein against $4-nitrophenyl-\beta-D-glucopyranoside$(pNPG). A temperature-stability analysis demonstrated that the enzyme was unstable at $50^{\circ}C$ and above. The enzyme did not require divalent cations for activity, and its activity was significantly suppressed by $Hg^{+2}\;and\;Ag^+$, whereas sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS) and Triton X-100 moderately inhibited the enzyme to under 70% of its initial activity. In an algal lytic activity analysis, the growth of cyanobacteria, such as Anabaena flos-aquae, A. cylindrica, A. macrospora, Oscillatoria sancta, and Microcystis aeruginosa, was strongly inhibited by a treatment of 20 ppm/disc or 30 ppm/disc concentration of the enzyme.

  • Silica hybrid silver nanoparticles showing the strong antimicrobial activity, in which nano-silver is bound to silica molecules, has been synthesized using ${\gamma}-irradiation$ at room temperature. The present study relates to an antimicrobial composition for coating fiber products comprising silica hybrid silver nanoparticles. In this study, we describe antimicrobial fiber products coated with the silica hybrid silver nanoparticles and a method of antimicrobially treating fiber products by coating the fiber products with the silica hybrid silver nanoparticles. The antimicrobial fiber products exhibited excellent antimicrobial effects. In detailed practice, when the present composition comprising nanosized silica-silver was applied to a cloth (fabric) in a concentration of $6.4mg\;yard^{-1}$, the viable cell number decreased to less than 10 cells before and after laundering, resulting in a reduction of 99.9% or greater in the viable cell number. The present composition displays long-lasting potent disinfecting effects on bacteria. Also, we investigated the toxicity of silica hybrid silver nanoparticles in rats. The skin of rats was treated with a 30 ppm nanoparticles solution ($2ml\;Kg^{-1}$) for 8 days. No toxicity was detected in the treatment. These results suggest that the fiber products coated with the silica hybrid silver nanoparticles can be used to inhibit the growth of various microorganisms.

  • Background: The article presents the results of studies performed in order to develop a new method of airborne potassium bromate(V) determination at workplaces. Methods: The method is based on a collection of the inhalable fraction of potassium bromate(V) using the IOM Sampler, then extraction of bromates with deionized water and chromatographic analysis of the obtained solution. The analysis was performed using ion chromatography with conductometric detection. The tests were performed on a Dionex IonPac®AS22 analytic column (250 × 4 mm, 6 ㎛) with AG22 precolumn (50 × 4 mm 11 ㎛). Results: The method provides for potassium bromate(V) determination within the concentration range of 0.043 ÷ 0.88 mg/m3 for an air sample of 0.72 m3 in volume, i.e., 0.1-2 times the exposure limit value as proposed in Poland. The method was validated in accordance with PN-EN 482. The obtained validation data are as follows: measuring range: 3.1-63.4 ㎍/mL, limit of detection (LOD) = 0.018 ㎍/mL and limit of quantification (LOQ) = 0.053 ㎍/mL. The developed method has been tested in the work environment, on laboratory employees having contact with potassium bromate(V). Conclusion: The analytical method allowed the determination of the inhalable fraction of airborne potassium bromate(V) at workplaces and can be used to assess occupational exposure.

  • Top emission organic light-emitting diode (TEOLED) is commonly used because of high efficiency and good color purity than bottom - emission organic light-emitting device (BEOLED). Unlike BEOLED, TEOLED contain semitransparent metal cathode and capping layer. Because there are many characteristics to consider just simple thickness change, optimizing organic thickness of TEOLED for microcavity is difficult. So, in this study, we optimized Device capping layer at unoptimized micro-cavity structure TEOLED device. And we compare only capping layer with unoptimized microcavity structure can overcome optimized micro-cavity structure device. We used previous our optimized micro-cavity structure to compare each other. As a result, it has been found that the efficiency can be obtained almost the same or higher only capping layer, which is stacked on top of the device and controls only the thickness and refractive index, without complicated structural calculations. This means that higher efficiencies can be obtained more easily in laboratories with limited organic materials or when optimizing new structures etc.

  • An attempt was made to utilize the enzyme produced by Asp. oryzae as meat tenderizer. The production, purification, and various properties of proteinase produced by Asp. oryzae were investigated. Results obtained are as follow; 1. A strain which had the highest proteolytic activity was selected among 9 Aspergillus species. 2. Culture medium consisted of wheat bran 10g, 2% glucose, 0.03% urea and 0.1% $MgSO_4$ (pH 6.5). Mold was incubated at $30^{\circ}C$ for 3 days. 3. Enzyme extract from culture medium were fractionated with ammonium sulfate and purified by Sephadex G-75 column chromatography. 4. When pH of reaction mixture was controlled, maximal activity of proteinase by Asp. oryzae was obtained at pH 3, pH 6.6, $8.4{\sim}8.5$ and pH 10.0 to 10.5. Those results were interpreted to show that enzyme consists of acid proteinase, neutral proteinase and alkaline proteinase. Enzyme was stable at pH 6 to 10. 5. Opt. temperature for proteinase activity was $50^{\circ}C$, but enzyme was stable up to $40^{\circ}C$. 6. The proteinase was inhibited by $Ag^+$. It was also inhibited by EDTA. 7. When myofibrillar proteins were treated by proteinase from Asp. oryzae, ATPase activities of myofibrillar proteins changed remarkably. Accordingly, it was concluded that proteinase produced by Asp. oryzae were able to be used as meat tenderizer.

  • This study was conducted to find the factors affecting somatic embryogenesis in suspension culture of Rehmania glutinosa and investigate the possibility of artificial seed production by encapsulation of somatic embryos. Linsmeier-Skoog medium was appeared as proper for somatic embryogenesis. Sucrose with $3{\sim}5%$ as carbon sources was good for somatic embryogenesis, and both ammonium and nitrate nitrogen were necesary for normal somatic embryo production. BA with NAA or kinetin with NAA were better than the use of cytokinin alone for both somatic embryogenesis and numbers of somatic embryos. $AgNO_3$ as protectant for vitrification of seedlings in vitro culture had no harmful effect on somatic embryos. Sphericity of encapsulated seeds was good at 3% gel of sodium alginate but germination was better at 2.5% sodium alginate level. Artificial seeds were germinated and developed normal shoots and roots under in vitro condition.

  • Magnesium oxide has become focus for research activities due to its use in magnetic tunnel junctions and for understanding of do ferromagnetism. Theoretical investigations on such type of system indicate that the presence of defects greater than a threshold value is responsible for the magnetic behaviour. It has also been shown experimentally that by decreasing the film thickness and size of nanoparticles, enhancement/increase in magnetization can be achieved. Apart from the change in dimension, swift heavy ions (SHI) are well known for creating defects and modifying the properties of the materials. In the present work, we have studied the irradiation induced effects in magnesium oxide thin film deposited on quartz substrate via X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). Magnesium oxide thin films of thickness 50nm were deposited on quartz substrate by using e-beam evaporation method. These films were irradiated by 200 MeV Ag15+ ion beam at fluence of $1{\times}10^{11}$, $5{\times}10^{11}$, $1{\times}10^{12}$, $3{\times}10^{12}$ and $5{\times}10^{12}ions/cm^2$ at Nuclear Science Centre, IUAC, New Delhi (India). The grain size was observed (as studied by AFM) to be decreased from 37 nm (pristine film) to 23 nm ($1{\times}10^{12}ions/cm^2$) and thereafter it increases upto a fluence of $5{\times}10^{12}ions/cm^2$. The electronic structure of the system has been investigated by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements performed at the high energy spherical grating monochromator 20A1 XAS (HSGM) beamline in the National Synchrotron Radiation Research Center (NSRRC), Taiwan. Oxides of light elements like MgO/ZnO possess many unique physical properties with potentials for novel application in various fields. These irradiated thin films are also studied with different polarization (left and right circularly polarized) of incident x-ray beam at 05B3 EPU- Soft x-ray scattering beamline of NSRRC. The detailed analysis of observed results in the wake of existing theories is discussed.

  • The effect of several factors on efficiency of anther culture of broccoli was studied. The medium supplemented with 14% sucrose, 125mg/L of silver nitrate and 0.1mg/L of each of NAA and 2,4-D was best in embryogenesis in all varieties tested. The effect of auxin was affected by silver nitrate, that is, it lowered embryogenesis when the concentration of NAA and 2,4-D was low, but it enhanced when their concentrations were high. Benzyl aminopurine increased embryogenesis in some varieties, but decreased in others. Although microspore embryogenesis was observed in anthers of which heigest was 1 to 0.6 - 1.0 of petal heigest in the bud, which corresponds to the early uninucleate to early binucleate stage of the microspores, it was much better when the ratio of heigest was 1 : 0.8. More embryos ware inducted from culture in March than in February in general. Because there was a big yearly variation, it was assumed that microspore embryogenesis was influenced greatly by the culture condition and the physiological condition of donor plants.
