In this study, structural and micowave dielectric properties of the $Mg_{5}B_{4}O_{15}$ (B=Ta, Nb) cation-deficient perovskite ceeramics. The specimens are prepared through the solid-state route. According to the XRD pattern, $Mg_{4}Ta_{2}O_9$ and $MgTa_{2}O_6$ phase exist in calcined and sintered $Mg_{5}Ta_{4}O_{15}$ powder. Also $Mg_{5}Ta_{4}O_{15}$ phase added with increasing sintering temperature. In the case of calcined and sintered $Mg_{5}Nb_{4}O_{15}$ powder, single phase of $Mg_{5}Nb_{4}O_{15}$ were appeared. The bulk density and quality factor of the $Mg_{5}B_{4}O_{15}$ (B=Ta, Nb) ceramics were increased with sinteming temperature in $1400^{\circ}C{\sim}1450^{\circ}C$, but these were decreased in another sintering temperature. Dielectric constant of the $Mg_{5}Ta_{4}O_{15}$ ceramics was increased continuously with increasing of sintering temperature. And the dielectric constant of the $Mg_{5}Nb_{4}O_{15}$ ceramics was increased in $1400^{\circ}C{\sim}1450^{\circ}C$ but decreased in $1475^{\circ}C$. In the case of the $Mg_{5}Ta_{4}O_{15}$ and $Mg_{5}Nb_{4}O_{15}$ ceramics sintered at $1450^{\circ}C$ for 5h, the dielectric constant, quality factor, and temperature coefficient of the resonant frequency (TCRF) were 8.2, 259,473 GHz, -10.91 $ppm/^{\circ}C$ and 14, 37,350 GHz, -52.3 $ppm/^{\circ}C$, respectively.
The preparation of $TiB_2$ by SHS in $B_2O_3-Mg-TiO_2$ system was investigated in this study. In the preparation of $TiB_2$, the effect on reactivity and reaction products of the initial pressure of inert gas in reactor, the content of Mg and $TiO_2$ in mixture was investigated. The minimum initial pressure of inert gas in reactor for SHS reaction in this system was 5atm, and as the pressure increased, the concentration of unreacted Mg decreased and combustion temperature increased. At the initial inert gas pressure in reactor of 50atm, the optimum composition for the preparation of pure $TiB_2$ was $B_2O_3+5Mg+TiO_2$. The $TiB_2$ synthesized in this condition had an irregular shape and the particle size of $1\~3{\mu}m$.
Field and nutrient cultures of American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius L.) were used to establish foliar symptoms related to boron (B) concentration in leaves and soils, and to evaluate radish as a time-saving model system for B nutrition. Application of excess B, 8 kg/ha versus the recommended 1.5 kg/ha, to field plantings of 2-, 3-, and 4-yr-old American ginseng plants just prior to crop emergence caused, within 4 wk after crop emergence, leaf symptoms of chlorosis followed by necrosis starting at the tips and progressing along the margins. The B concentration in leaves of 2-4-yr-old plants receiving 1.5 kg/ha Bwas $30{\mu}g/g$ dry mass compared to $460{\mu}g/g$ dry mass where 8 kg/ha B was applied. Similarly, B concentration in soils receiving the lower B concentration was 1.8 mg/g dry mass and $2.2-2.8{\mu}g/g$ dry mass where the higher B concentration was applied. Application of 8 kg/ha B reduced the dry yield of 3rd-yr roots by 20% from 2745 kg/ha to 2196 kg/ha and 4th-yr roots by 26% from 4130 kg/ha to 3071 kg/ha. Ginseng seedlings and radish were grown under greenhouse conditions in nutrient culture with four B concentrations ranging from 0 mg/L to 10 mg/L. At 5 mg/L and 10 mg/L ginseng and radish developed typical leaf B toxicity symptoms similar to those described above for field-grown plants. Increasing B in the nutrient solution from 0.5 mg/L to 10 mg/L decreased, in a linear fashion, the root and leaf dry mass of ginseng, but not radish. Given the many similarities of ginseng and radish to B utilization, radish might be used as a timesaving model system for the study of B, and other micronutrients, in the slow-growing perennial ginseng.
We have studied the $TiO_2$ doping effects on the flux pinning behavior of an $MgB_2$ superconductor synthesized by the in-situ solid-state reaction. From the field-cooled and zero-field-cooled temperature dependences of magnetization, the reversible-irreversible transition of $TiO_2$-doped $MgB_2$ was determined in the H-T diagram (the temperature dependence of upper critical magnetic field and irreversibility line). For comparison, the similar measurements are also obtained from SiC-doped $MgB_2$. The critical current density was estimated from the width of hysteresis loops in the framework of Bean's model at different temperatures. The obtained results manifest that nano-scale $TiO_2$ inclusions served as effective pinning centers and lead to the enhanced upper critical field and critical current density. It was concluded that the grain boundary pinning mechanism was realized in a $TiO_2$-doped $MgB_2$ superconductor.
We fabricated the polyacrylic acid (PAA)-doped $MgB_2$ bulks and characterized their lattice parameters, actual C substitutions, microstructures, and critical properties. The boron (B) powder was mixed with PAA using N,N-dimethylformamide as solvent and then the solution was dried out at $200^{\circ}C$ and crushed. The C treated B powder and magnesium powder were mixed and compacted by uniaxial pressing at 500 MPa, followed by sintering at $900^{\circ}C$ for 1 h in high purity Ar atmosphere. We observed that the PAA doping increased the MgO amount but decreased the grain size, a-axis lattice constant, and critical temperature ($T_c$), which is indicative of the C substitution for B sites in $MgB_2$. In addition, the critical current density ($J_c$) at high magnetic field was significantly improved with increasing PAA addition: at 5 K and 6.6 T, the $J_c$ of 7 wt% PAA-doped sample was $6.39\;{\times}\;10^3\;A/cm^2$ which was approximately 6-fold higher than that of the pure sample ($1.04\;{\times}\;10^3\;A/cm^2$). This improvement was probably due to the C substitution and the refinement of grain size by PAA doping, suggesting that PAA is an effective dopant in improving $J_c$(B) performance of $MgB_2$.
Carbon coating approach is used to prepare carbon-doped $MgB_2$ bulk samples using low-cost naphthalene ($C_{10}H_8$) as a carbon source. The coating of carbon (C) on boron (B) powders was achieved by direct pyrolysis of naphthalene at $120^{\circ}C$ and then the C-coated B powders were mixed well with appropriate amount of Mg by solid state reaction method. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that there is a noticeable shift in (100) and (110) Bragg reflections towards higher angles, while no shift was observed in (002) reflections for $MgB_2$ doped with carbon. As compared to un-doped $MgB_2$, a systematic enhancement in $J_c(H)$ properties with increasing carbon doping level was observed for naphthalene-derived C-doped $MgB_2$ samples. The substantial enhancement in $J_c$ is most likely due to the incorporation of C into $MgB_2$ lattice and the reduction in crystallite size, as evidenced by the increase in the FWHM values for doped samples.

Liquid metal extraction (LME), a pyrometallurgical recycling method, is popular owing to its negligible environmental impact. LME mainly targets rare-earth permanent magnets having several rare-earth elements. Mg is used as a solvent metal for LME because of its selective and eminent reactivity with rare-earth elements in magnets. Several studies concerning the formation of Dy-Fe intermetallic compounds and their effects on LME using Mg exist. However, methods for reducing these compounds are unavailable. Fe reacts more strongly with B than with Dy; B addition can be a reducing method for Dy-Fe intermetallic compounds owing to the formation of Fe2B, which takes Fe from Dy-Fe intermetallic compounds. The FeB alloy is an adequate additive for the decomposition of Fe2B. To accomplish the former process, Mg must convey B to a permanent magnet during the decomposition of the FeB alloy. Here, the effect of Mg on the transfer of B from FeB to permanent magnet is observed through microstructural and phase analyses. Through microstructural and phase analysis, it is confirmed that FeB is converted to Fe2B upon B transfer, owing to Mg. Finally, the transfer effect of Mg is confirmed, and the possibility of reducing Dy-Fe intermetallic compounds during LME is suggested.

Recent experiments have demonstrated high TMR ratios in MTJs with the MgO barrier [1,2]. The CoFeB/MgO/CoFeB junctions showed better properties than the CoFe/MgO/CoFe junctions because the MgO layer had a good crystalline structure with (001) texture and smooth and sharp interface between CoFeB/MgO [3]. The amorphous CoFeB with 20 at%B starts the crystallization at $340^{\circ}C$ [4] and this crystallization of the CoFeB helps obtaining the high TMR ratio. In this work, the compositional changes in the MgO barrier and at the interface of CoFeB/MgO/CoFeB after the CoFeB crystallization were studied in annealed MTJs. XPS depth profiles were utilized. TEM analyses showed that the MgO barrier had (100) texture on CoFeB in the junctions. B in the bottom CoFeB layer diffused into the MgO barrier and B-oxide was formed at the interface of CoFeB/MgO/CoFeB after the CoFeB crystallization.
The effects of nano $Fe_xC$ addition to superconducting properties of $in$$situ$ processed $MgB_2$ superconductors was examined. 0.1 wt.% and 1 wt.% nano $Fe_xC$ powders were mixed with boron and magnesium powders by ball milling. The powder mixtures were made into pellets by uniaxial pressing. The pellets were heat-treated at $700^{\circ}C-900^{\circ}C$ in argon atmosphere for $MgB_2$ formation. It was found by powder X-ray diffraction that the raw powders were completely converted into $MgB_2$ after the heat treatment. The superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) and critical current density ($J_c$), estimated from susceptibility-temperature and $M-H$ curves, were decreased by nano $Fe_xC$ addition. The $T_c$ and $J_c$ decrease by nano $Fe_xC$ addition are attributed to the incorporation of iron and carbon with $MgB_2$ lattices (Fe substitution for Mg and C substitution for B) due to the high reactivity of the nano $Fe_xC$ powder.
