  • Twenty esters, 14 alcohols, 5 aldehydes, 5 ketones, 5 lactones, 2 S-containing compounds and 1 hydrocarbon are identified by GC-MS from volatile compounds in a glucose solution containing Yeat-Carbon-Base medium fermented for 64 hrs by Saccharomyces bayanus at pH 3.5, $25^{\circ}C$, 400rpm and 35L/h of aeration for 24hrs. Under the different conditions of conservation(1~4), ethyl 2-hydroxy-4-metjhylpentanoate, ethyl succinate, nonanol and phenylacetaldehyde are produced during conservation of fermented solution. 17 esters increased during conservation at $13^{\circ}C$ for 12 weeks and the increase of ethyl 9-hexadecenoate is important among 13 esters increased during conservation at $35^{\circ}C$ for 24hrs. During conservation, aldehydes increased at $35^{\circ}C$, but decreased at $13^{\circ}C$ and the great increase of isobutanal, benzaldehyde and phenylacetaldehyde is observed at $35^{\circ}C$. Alcoho and lactones increased but ketones decreased during conservation.

  • This work reported concerns the removal of mixtures of methyl ethyl ketone (MEKJ, methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) and BTXs, which find wide application as industrial solvents, using the biofilter by the microbial consortium, The biofilter was constructed from acryl columns and was 400 mm in length and 55 mm in diameter and the height of fibrous packing material which made of PVC was 160 111111, 8 seconds of the retention time, pH 6.5 - 7.5 and the initial inlet concentration of MEK, MIBK and BTXs were 220 ppm. The removal efficiency of the gaseous mixtures was relatively low during the initial 2 days after inoculum of the microbial consortium, after 3 days, however, the efficiency was increased remarkably. In this study, The removal efficiency of the biofilter for the mixtures show the high degree from one day after inoculum of the microbial consortium, having no relation to the fluctuation of the inlet concentration of MEK, MIBK and BTXs.

  • VOC mixture was fed to a trickle bed air biofilter (TBAB) with step-change in influent mixture concentrations from 50 ppmv to 1,000 ppmv, corresponding to loadings of $5.7\;g/m^3/hr$ to $114.1\;g/m^3/hr$. VOC mixture was an equimolar ratio of two aromatic VOCs, i.e., toluene and styrene, and two oxygenated VOCs, i.e., methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) and methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK). The TBAB system employed backwashing as biomass control. The experimental results showed that a critical loading rate for VOC mixture removal was determined to be about $60\;g/m^3/hr$, and critical loading rates for individual VOCs in the mixture were different. Specifically, toluene content in the mixture played a major role in the biofilter overall performance. As VOC mixture was fed beyond the critical loading rate, reacclimation of the biofilter to reach the 99% removal efficiency following backwashing was delayed, which was a critical factor in the biofilter performance. In the mass balance analysis, 63.8% of the carbon equivalent in VOCs removal was used for $CO_2$ production during the experimental runs. The 82.6% nitrogen utilized in the biofilter was contributed to microbial cell synthesis. The obtained results were compared against consistently high efficient performance of TBAB for VOC mixture by employing backwashing as biomass control.

  • The partitioning behavior of the five printing ink solvents in nine lab-made cookies with various sugar and water content at 25${^{\circ}C}$ was studied to find out the presence and effects of interaction between the two ingredients on partitioning behavior in cookies. Solvents were ethyl acetate, hexane, isopropanol, methyl ethyl ketone and hexane. It was observed that the partition coefficient (the solvent concentration in food compared to that in air, Kp) decreased as sugar increased in all case and increased as water content increased for all compounds except toluene. Statistical analysis by the F-test method was used to determine the significance of sugar-water interactions, as well as other single factors on partitioning behavior of each solvent. Sugar content alone had no significant effects, but the crystallinity of sugar, as changed by water content, affected the partitioning behavior of the five solvents significantly. Parameter estimation for each significant factor by SAS program yielded a regression equation, which was used to predict the partitioning behavior in the finished cookie. Kp values from the regression equation could be determined more precisely by applying a correction term for the interaction between sugar and water to the Kp values of each ingredient after baking.

  • The partitioning behavior of five printing ink solvents was studied in cookie ingredients and cookies to examine migration behavior, and to determine if one could predict Kp of a cookie from summing the Kp of each ingredient multiplied by its weight factor in the cookie formula. Solvents were ethyl acetate, hexane, isopropanol, methyl ethyl ketone, and toluene. Gas chromatography was used to measure Kp values on each raw and baked ($260^{\circ}C$ for 10 min) cookie ingredients, and lab-made cookies. The baking process-decreases in water content in each sample generally affected Kp of polar solvents, but did not affect that of the non-polar solvents. Structural changes in cookie ingredients during the baking process also caused some change of migration behavior. While the prediction of Kp of lab-made cookies using the Kp of raw ingredients showed significant differences between calculated and experimentally found values, predictions with baked ingredients showed much smaller differences. This suggests that loss of water and changes of crystallinity in cookies and cookie ingredients due to the baking process are important and affect the Kp.

  • A new-type apparatus decomposing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) using a combination system of an electrical exothermic SiC honeycomb and a catalytic filter was developed. This linear combination system is very useful to the catalytic decomposition of VOCs, because the gas involving VOCs is well heated in the SiC honeycomb and then flows into the catalytic filter. In the proposed apparatus, the outlet gas temperatures of SiC honeycomb maintained at ca. $300^{\circ}C$ after 5 min from the starting of applying electric current, and sufficient for the catalytic degradation of VOC components, i.e. toluene, isopropanol, methyl ethyl ketone and ethyl acetate. The average decomposition rate of total VOCs exhausted from a printing factory was 85% using pt catalyst at SV=19,000 in this system.

  • Enzymatic polymerization of cardol derived from cashew nut shell liquid have been examined. t-Butyl alcohol aqueous systems showed high yield of polycardol when SBP was as biocatalyst. Compared other solvents, peroxidase actiyity was maintained stable, which was seemed major cause. Solvent aqueous system and concentration of hydrogen peroxide were found to have an influence on the yield and molecular weight distribution of polycardol under the reaction of enzymatic polymerization using peroxidase. The polymer was subjected to the hardening by methyl ethyl ketone peroxide and cobalt naphthenate catalyst, giving a crosslinked tough film. Polycardol was cured rapidly and the hardness increased with time. Finally, the pencil scratch hardness reached to 7H, which is enough hard for industrial uses.

  • This study was investigated to evaluate worker exposures to organic solvents by type of print industry. Results were as follows; 1. Workers were exposed to mixture of toluene, isopropyl alcohol(IPA), methyl ethyl ketone(MEK), n-hexane, ethylacetate(EA), acetone. The components of high exposure solvents were toluene, IPA and MEK. 2. Considering additive effects of the compounds, exposure indices(Em) were calculated. The Mean of exposure indices were 1.79 for Gravere, 0.41 for Screen and 0.14 for Opset workplace. The workers of Gravere workplace were estimated to overexpose for solvents. 3. The highest overexposed solvent was toluene for a single component. The rate of overexposed level for toluene was 7.41% for some print workplace and for mixed solvent was 1.85%. 4. Local exhaust systems were inappropriate and respiratory protective devices were not supplied to the workers. 5. Sound level was over 90dB(A) in Opset print workplace and some measures should be performed to get down the sound level.

  • Application properties of ultra light weight silica aerogel toward polyurethane membranes were investigated. From the results of pre-milling process of the silica aerogel, the solvent for dispersion of the aerogel was determined for methyl ethyl ketone and its content in the solvent was determined by 30%. Using this aerogel dispersion, the polyurethane membranes were prepared according to the mixing amount of silica aerogel and various properties of the membranes were investigated. As results, the optimum mixing amount of silica aerogel inside polyurethane membranes was decided at 11%, because the improvement of light weight property, air permeability, and moisture vapor permeability were improved upto 11% of silica aerogel content, maintaining the water penetration resistance almost unchanged.

  • Measurement of water is a subject of continued interest. High resolution proton magnetic resonance has not been very effective in the determination of water. Especially spectral overlap with other proton signals from the sample is undesirable result. However, trifluoroacetic anhydride reacts with water and forms trifluoroacetic acid and the proton signal of trifluoroacetic acid did not overlap with that of samples. By use of this fact, water in acetone, ethyl ether, dioxane, dichloroethane and methyl isobutyl ketone is analyzed by high resolution proton magnetic resonance (PMR). This method is capable of detecting as little as 200ppm of $H_{2}O$. And it is very rapid, simple and accurate.
