  • Modular design is a very important design methodology that allows designers to develop a product family at low product development and production cost. This design methodology is also very powerful for products that require frequent design changes due to customer requirements. Most research on modular design is focused on the modularization based on functional decomposition, physical interface and manufacturing process of parts. In this paper, we propose a modularization method that takes size of human body parts into consideration for products which have physical interactions with the products such as office chairs and sport machines. Evaluation of modular design is based on dependence measurement between every pair of components in the design. In addition we proposed a module sizing method for the maximization of customer satisfaction in MC(Mass Customization) environment.

  • The purpose of this paper was to design evaluation process on technological information analysis done by re-tired scientists and engineers. Existing studies on evaluation system and methodology were analyzed and their implications are as follows. To provide useful feedback to the retired scientists, indicators of evaluation should be simplified and method of evaluation confined to the quantitative one. And the results of evaluation need to be utilized in direction to encourage the old scientists and engineers.

  • This study introduces a deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based methodology for optimizing apartment space arrangements, addressing the limitations of human capability in evaluating all potential spatial configurations. Leveraging computational power, the methodology facilitates the autonomous exploration and evaluation of innovative layout options, considering architectural principles, legal standards, and client re-quirements. Through comprehensive simulation tests across various apartment types, the research demonstrates the DRL approach's effec-tiveness in generating efficient spatial arrangements that align with current design trends and meet predefined performance objectives. The comparative analysis of AI-generated layouts with those designed by professionals validates the methodology's applicability and potential in enhancing architectural design practices by offering novel, optimized spatial configuration solutions.

  • 지구의 지속가능한 개발에 대한 설계 방법은 자연의 과정과 도시환경을 종합적으로 이해하는 통각적(apperceptive), 전체론적(holistic) 관점을 요구하고 있다. 통각적, 전체론적 조경 설계방법은 분석-계획-설계의 개별 과정이 하나의 환경에서 수반되어져야 하며, 각각의 과정별로 공간에 대한 많은 정보를 제공하여야 하고, 디자인의 결과와 영향에 대한 평가와 이해가 수반되어야 한다. 1969년 "Design with Nature"에서 Ian Mcharg가 제시하였던 지구 전체를 하나의 생태계(Superorganism)로 보는 비젼이 Geodesign의 기술 환경으로 현실화 되어가고 있다. 본 논문에서는 기존 GIS의 지속가능한 설계의 지원한계를 극복하고 수행할 수 있는 Geodesign 조경설계 방법에 대해 고찰하고 선행연구의 분석을 진행하였다. 이와 함께 국외의 Geodesign 사례와 적용 이론들에 대한 고찰을 통해 조경설계를 위한 Geodesign 방법론을 제시하였다. 또한 제시된 방법론을 구현하기 위한 Geodesign 기술과 도구들을 살펴보고, 방법론의 적용을 통해 기술적 가능성, 활용 방안 등을 검토하고, 미래의 조경설계에 있어서 본 방법론이 가지는 잠재력과 효율성을 입증하였다.

Seismic evaluation of isolated skewed bridges using fragility function methodology

  • A methodology, based on fragility functions, is proposed to evaluate the seismic performance of seismic isolated $45^{\circ}$ skewed concrete bridge: 1) twelve types of seismic isolation devices are considered based on two different design parameters 2) fragility functions of a three-span bridge with and without seismic isolation devices are analytically evaluated based on 3D nonlinear incremental dynamic analyses which seismic input consists of 20 selected ground motions. The optimum combinations of isolation device design parameters are identified comparing, for different limit states, the performance of 1) the Seismic Isolated Bridges (SIB) and 2) Not Seismic Isolated Bridge (NSIB) designed according to the AASHTO standards.

  • This research is aimed at being a cornerstone to elicit the evaluation methodology of systematic and objective lighting design process on the basis of investigation of documentation and interviews on lighting design of architecture which is drawing more and more attention in an architectural field. In evaluating lighting design in architecture, such factors as appropriate illumination, quality of light, completion degree, reflection of use, visual amenity, understanding, amiability, artistic value, recognition, regional conditions, and extent of glare are to be more considered than anything else. In so far as general sectors of society show ever-increasing interest in lighting design, developments in both its quality and its quantity are also expected; thus, evaluation items shown in this research will be useful in appraisal of interior and exterior lighting of architecture.

  • Most real world design evaluation and risk-based decision support combine quantitative and qualitative (linguistic) variables. Decision making based on conventional mathematics that combines qualitative and quantitative concepts always exhibit difficulty in modelling actual problems. The successful selection process for choosing a design/procurement proposal is based on a high degree of technical integrity, safety levels and low costs in construction, corrective measures, maintenance, operation, inspection and preventive measures. In this paper, a design decision support framework using a composite structure methodology grounded in approximate reasoning approach and evidential reasoning method is suggested for design evaluation of machinery space of a ship engine room at the initial stages. An illustrative example is used to demonstrate the application of the proposed framework.

  • Turbulent mixing of hot and cold coolants is one of the possible causes of high cycle thermal fatigue in piping systems of nuclear power plants. A typical situation for such mixing appears in turbulent flow through a T-junction. Since the high cycle thermal fatigue caused by thermal striping was not considered in the piping fatigue design in several nuclear power plants, it is very important to evaluate the effect of thermal striping on the integrity of mixing tees. In the present work, before conducting detailed evaluation, three thermal striping evaluation methodology suggested by EPRI, JSME and NESC are analyzed. Then, a by-pass pipe connected to the shutdown cooling system heat exchanger is investigated by using these evaluation methodology. Consequently, the resulting thermal stresses and the fatigue life of the mixing tee are reviewed and compared to each other. Futhermore, the limitation of each methodology are also presented in this paper.

  • The aim of this paper is to evaluate the methodological strategies for the architectural design field of study mainly focused on qualitative and quantitative research designs. Firstly, this paper addresses the characteristics of the six approaches including their methodological aspects in general. Each strategy is assessed by the different approaches to give full insights in it. Secondly, it distinguishes the differences among six research approaches especially derived from qualitative and quantitative research designs. The differences are discussed in terms of the strengths and weaknesses of each strategy. Finally, this paper attempts to discuss about possible applications for introducing approaches to the research topic with which the exemplified research topic, a design evaluation system, deals. To investigate the applicability of the design methods employed, the following topic has been stated; how to develop a design evaluation system and what to be considered for unfolding the thrown topic in terms of strategic approaches in the field of architectural design researches reviewed through the study.

Decision-making based on conventional mathematics that combines qualitative and quantitative concepts always exhibit difficulty in modelling actual problems. The successful selection process for choosing a design/procurement proposal is based on a high degree of technical integrity, safety levels and low costs in construction, corrective measures, maintenance, operation, inspection and preventive measures. However, the objectives of maximising the degree of technical performance, maximising the safety levels and minimising the costs incurred are usually in conflict, and the evaluation of the technical performance, safety and costs is always associated with uncertainties, especially for a novel system at the initial concept design stage. In this paper, a design-decision support framework using a composite structure methodology grounded in approximate reasoning approach and evidential reasoning method is suggested for design evaluation of machinery space of a ship engine room at the initial stages. It is a Multiple Attribute Decision-Making (MADM) or Multiple Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) framework, which provides a juxtaposition of cost, safety and technical performance of a system during evaluation to assist decision makers in selecting the winning design/procurement proposal that best satisfies the requirement in hand. An illustrative example is used to demonstrate the application of the proposed framework.
