In this study, crude extract of the seagrass Zostera japonica, and its solvent-partitioned fractions were evaluated for their antioxidant activity. The crude extract was successively fractionated into n-hexane, 85% aqueous methanol (85% aq.MeOH), n-butanol (n-BuOH), and water fractions by liquid-liquid partition. These include DPPH radical scavenging, hydroxyl radical scavenging in HT-1080 cells, peroxynitrite scavenging, and protective effect on DNA damage caused by hydroxyl radicals generated. In all assays, except for DPPH radical, 85% aq.MeOH and n-BuOH fraction showed the strong antioxidant activity. These results suggest that Z. japonica may be used as a potential source of natural antioxidants for the development of cosmetic product or functional food in the future.
The objective of this study is to evaluate the antioxidant activity of the fruits of Ligustrum japonicum. The crude extract was successively fractionated into n-hexane, 85% aqueous methanol (85% aq.MeOH), n-butanol (n-BuOH), and water fractions by means of solvent polarity. The crude extract and its solvent fractions were evaluated for their antioxidant effect by four different assay systems: scavenging power on peroxynitrite and intralcellular ROS produced in HT-1080 cells; DNA oxidation inhibition; ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). The n-BuOH fraction exhibiting potent antioxidant activity was further purified by C18 silica gel column chromatography and RP-HPLC to give tyrosol (1) and salidroside (2). The structure of isolated compounds was determined by extensive 2 D NMR experiments such as $^1H$ COSY, NOESY, HSQC and HMBC as well as by comparison with the published spectral data.
${\underline{O}},{\underline{O}}-Diethyl-{\underline{S}}-phenyl\;phosphorothiolate-^{18}O$ and other related compounds were prepared and oxidized with m-chloroperbenzoic acid (MCPBA). Each reaction was followed by $^{31}P$ NMR and the products were analyzed by GC-MS. ${\underline{O}},{\underline{O}}-Diethyl-{\underline{S}}-phenyl\;phosphorothiolate-^{18}O$ was converted to diethyl methyl phosphate in methanol by MCPBA and it was confirmed to contain $^{18}O$, which proved that the originally proposed mechanism of Segall and Casida operates in the oxidative reaction.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the physiological functionality of Coriolus versicolor Quel (CV) and Ganoderma IUCIdum (Fr.)Karst (GL) by estimate the proximate composition and content of antioxidant components. 1. In the physicochemical property. the content of proximate composition of GL was higher 08.28% of moisture, 10.3% of crude protein, 78.4% of crude fiber) than that of CV, but the content of crude lipid and ashes of GL was higher than that of CV. 2. CV had relatively higher content of antioxidant components such as total phenol, carotenoids and v itamin C. than GL did. Antioxidant mineral components such as magnesium and zinc also had relatively higher in CV than in GL. 3. TBA value, conjugated diene production, LDL oxidation, DPPH of methanol extracts in CV and GL were as high as a-Tocopherol.

Synthesis gas such as hydrogen and carbon monoxide was produced from $CH_4/oxygen$ mixture using insulated pressurized porous media combustor. Experimentally, two cylindrical SiC foams with the different pore density were piled up in a quartz tube and fully premixed mixture was supplied in the axial direction. After stabilizing fuel-rich flame at the interface of the two foams at several pressure conditions, mole fractions of synthesis gases were measured by gas chromatography. Heat recirculation through the inner foam structure could extend the flow velocity of stable region over the laminar burning velocity. As the pressure increased, the rich flammability limit, $H_2/CO$ ratio, and module M increased.
We investigated the inhibitory effects of solvent extracts from dried yam on $H_2O_2$-induced oxidative stress and growth of cancer cell lines (HT1080 human fibrosarcoma and HT-29 human colon cancer cells). Yam (Dioscoreacea) has been recognized as a healthy food due to its various biological activities, such as anti-obesity, anti-constipation, anti-proliferation, and anti-mutagenic activities, as well as its ability to decrease blood glucose and cholesterol levels. In order to determine the protective effect on $H_2O_2$-induced oxidative stress, DCFH-DA (dichlorodihydrofluorescin diacetate) assay was conducted. Acetone with methylene chloride (A+M) extract of dried yam appeared to reduce the levels of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) with dose responses. Among the fractions, 85% aq. methanol fraction showed the highest protective effect on production of lipid peroxides. Inhibitory effects of A+M and methanol (MeOH) extracts on the growth of HT1080 and HT-29 cancer cells increased in a dose dependent manner. The treatments of n-hexane, 85% aq. methanol and n-butanol fractions (${\geqq}0.5$ mg/ml concentrations) significantly inhibited the growth of both cancer cells (p<0.05). From these results, 85% aq. methanol fraction showed inhibitory effects on cellular oxidation and growth of human cancer cells, suggesting that this fraction may contain active compounds of dried yam.

Annona muricata, generally known as soursop, graviola, or sirsak, is native to the warmest tropical areas of North and South America and is now widely distributed throughout tropical and subtropical parts of the world, including India and Nigeria. This study tested the contents of polyphenolic compounds, flavonoids, and minerals, as well as the antioxidative effects of DPPH radical-scavenging activity, Fe/Cu-reducing power, linoleic-acid peroxidation using thiobarbituric-acid (TBA) methods and peroxidation of rat-hepatocyte microsomes, and ${\beta}$-carotene bleaching assay. These were tested with in-vitro experimental models using water, ethanol, and methanol extracts of the Annona muricata leaf (AMl). Water extracts of AMl showed the highest extraction yield (1.76%). The total polyphenol-compound concentration was the highest in the methanol extract of AMl. However, the flavonoids concentration was the highest in the ethanol extracts of AMl. AMlMl major minerals were Ca, K, and Mg. In DPPH radical-scavenging activity, the contents exhibited a strong scavenging effect on the ethanol and methanol extracts of AMl. Additionally, the Fe/Cu-reducing power was strong in ethanol and methanol extracts of AMl. $Fe^{2+}$/ascorbate-induced linoleic-acid peroxidation using TBA methods and auto-oxidation of rat-hepatic microsomes showed strong antioxidative activities in ethanol extracts of AMl. ${\beta}$-Carotene bleaching was also highest in the ethanol extracts of AMl. These results may provide the basic data to understand the chemical characteristics and antioxidative effects of Annona muricata leaf extract for the development of functional foods.
This study was carried out to determine the inhibitory effects of solvent extracts from Sargassum hemiphyllum on growth of cancer cell lines (AGS human gastric adenocarcinoma and HT-29 human colon cancer cells) and production of lipid peroxides. Inhibitory effects of acetone with methylene chloride extract from S. hemiphyllum on the growth of AGS and HT-29 cancer cells were increased as dose dependent patterns (p<0.05). The methanol extract was more effective on inhibition of growth of AGS. The treatments of hexane, 85% aq. methanol, butanol and water fractions significantly inhibited the growth of cancer cells (p<0.05) and the inhibitory effect was stronger in HT-29. In DCFH-DA (dichlorodihydrofluorescin diacetate) assay, acetone with methylene chloride and methanol extracts showed a stronger inhibitory effect on the production of cellular lipid peroxides (p<0.05) compared with the butanol and hexane fractions. These results indicate that the consumption of S. hemiphyllum may be recommended as a potent functional food for preventing cellular oxidation and cancer.

Dioxygen binding and homogeneous catalytic oxidation of hydrazobenzene were investigated by employing tetradentate Schiff base Cobalt(II) complexes such as Co(II)(SED)$(Py)_2$, Co(II)(SOPD)$(Py)_2$ and Co(II)(SND)$(Py)_2$ in saturated oxygen methanol solvent. The major product of hydrazobenzene ($H_2$AB) oxidation by catalysts of superoxo type [Co(III)(SED)(Py)$O_2$] and [Co(III)(SOPD)(Py)$O_2$] complexes are trans-azobenzene (t-AB) and rate constants k for oxidation reaction was 7.692 ${\times}$$10^{-2}$ M/sec for [Co(III)(SED)(Py)$O_2$] and 5.076 ${\times}$$10^{-2}$ M/sec for [Co(III)(SOPD)(Py)$O_2$]. But cis-azobenzene (c-AB) are obtained as a major product with ${\mu}$-peroxo type [Co(III)(SED)(Py)]$_2O_2$ catalyst, and rate constant k is 1.266 ${\times}$$10^{-2}$ M/sec. The rate constants of oxidation reaction has been studied spectrophotometrically and the rate law established. A mechanism involving a intermediate activated complexes of catalyst, hydrazobenzene and oxygen has been proposed. $H_2$AB + Co(II)(Schiff base)$(Py)_2$ + $O_2$${\rightleftharpoons}_{MeOH}^K$ Co(III)(Schiff base)(Py)$O_2$${\cdot}$$H_2$AB + Py $\longrightarrow^k$ Co(II)(Schiff base)$(Py)_2$ + t-AB + $H_2O_2$(Scchiff base : SED and SOPD). $H_2$AB + 2Co(II)(SND)$(Py)_2$ + $O_2$${\rightleftharpoons}_{MeOH}^K$ [Co(III)(SND)(Py)]$_2O_2$${\cdot}$H_2$AB + 2Py ${\longrightarrow}^k$ (Co(II)(SND)$(Py)_2$ + c-AB + $H_2O_2$.

As the second part of the studies on the utilization of polyunsaturated lipids in sardine oil as nutritional or medical supplement, the conditions of lipid extration and concentration, refining, and storage stability of EPA-condensed sardine oil were investigated. In extraction of lipids, solvent ratios of chloroform-methanol mixture(2:1 v/v) affected the final content of unsaturated lipid in extracted oil and recovery. Stepwise solvent fractionation method at various low temperatures was effective to concentrate polyenoic acids like EPA and DHA when acetone or acetone-methanol mixture, added in the ratio of 1:5 (v/v) was applied step by step to different temperatures at 0 to $-35^{\circ}C$. Addition of 1 to $5\%$ (v/v) of water to acetone was also benefit to raise EPA content but that resulted in reducing the yield of condensed oil from $65\%\;to\;28\%$. Concentration rate of polyenoic acids by solvent fractionation in lipid-actone solution (1:5, v/v) at 0 to $-30^{\circ}C$ seemed limited to $5{\sim}8\%$ in fatty acid composition depending on the initial content of those polyenoic acids in the sardine oil. During the extraction, concentration, and alkaline treatment, oxidation was rapidly induced but oxidation products could be thoroughly removed on the process of deceleration and peroxide elimination. To stabilize the reactive polyenoic acid condensed oil during the storage, stuffing nitrogen gas was essential to expel dissolved oxygen in oil or to seal the oil from open air, and the addition of antioxidative agents as BHA and tocopherols were greatly helpful to extend the storage life.
