This study investigates the effects of different kind fuels on the flame structure by using the numerical simulation in triple flame made by a co-flowing fuels-air stream based on the elementary chemical reaction mechanism. Methane and Hydrogen were used as fuel for this study. In order to interpret the result of the study on numerical simulation Skeletal chemistry is employe as the elementary chemical reaction mechanism for methane Gutheil's as an offset ele-mentary chemical reaction mechanism for hydrogen. The result of this study is as follows. In com-parison between the apparent burning velocity change of triple flame and the one-dimensional pre-mixed flame hydrogen fuel flame is higher than methane fuel flame. The flame thrusts out for-ward in the down stream of the boundary between air-fuel mixture and air stream and a part of the flow is bent and forks out in this protruding flame so that a triple flame is originated.
When flammable gases are mixed with air or oxygen in the explosion concentration range and are ignited by sufficiently large electrostatic discharge energy, they may explode causing severe disaster in workplace. The minimum ignition energy(MIE) of single gas-air mixtures has been already investigated by many research, but the MIE of mixtures of more than ternary gas mixture is not examined yet. The purpose of this study is to investigate the MIE of a ternary gas(methane, ethylene, hydrogen, propane) mixtures experimentally. The results of our experiment show that the ignition of a methane-ethylene-air, methane-hydrogen-air, methane-propane-air, ethylene-hydrogen-air, ethylene-propane-air and hydrogen-propane-air mixture due to electrostatic discharge energy primarily depends on that the mixture: the MIE decreases gradually with the increase of having the lower MIE than other mixture ratio in the normal atmospheric pressure.

The present work is a continuation of our previous study to investigate the effects of parameters such as equivalence ratio, hydrogen supplement rate and initial pressure on combustion characteristics in a disk-shaped constant volume combustion chamber. The main results obtained from the study can be summarized as follows. The flames in near stoichiometric mixture of methane-air are propagated with a spherical shape, but in excess rich or lean mixtures are propagated with a elliptical shape. And, they are changed to an unstable elliptical shape flame with very regular cells by increasing the hydrogen supplement rate. Also, flame is sluggishly propagated at increased initial pressure in combustion chamber. Volume fraction of burned gas and flame radius as the combustion characteristics are increased by increasing the hydrogen supplement rate, especially at the combustion middle period, but then are slowly increased by increasing the initial pressure.
The stratification phenomena of still hydrogen (20%) and methane (80%) gas mixture in a vertical urban gas pipe have been investigated by simulating the flows based on a mixture model. The stratification is accompanied with the natural convection by the buoyancy force. The hydrogen volume fraction in the upper sections of the pipe increases with time but the increasing rate gets smaller due to the weaker buoyancy force. The pipe with a smaller diameter exhibits a higher peak of hydrogen concentration. The size of vortices is proportional to the pipe diameter. The slip velocity between hydrogen and methane oscillates with a large amplitude at the earlier stage of stratification and then the amplitude decreases sharply. The slip velocity decreases with the diameter, making the stratification become slower. The length of pipe does not affect the stratification since the pipe is sufficiently long relative to the size of vortices.
Plasma techniques have been proposed to generate a hydrogen enrich gas to investigate a feasibility of plasma techniques on a fuel reforming, we considered a dry reforming and a partial oxidation with methane in the atmospheric pressure. For these experiments, we employed an arc jet plasma reactor. The effects of input power and oxidizer in each process were investigated by product analysis, including carbon monoxide, hydrogen, ethylene, propane, and acetylene as well as methane and carbon dioxide. In both processes, input electrical power activated the reactions significantly. The increased ratio of the carbon dioxide to methane in the dry reforming doesn't affect to a methane conversion, whereas increased ratio of oxidizer to methane in the partial oxidation was very effective for the reaction. Moreover, for a simultaneous treatment of methane and carbon dioxide, a feasibility of a dry reforming combined with partial oxidation also has been investigated.

Methane direct cracking can be utilized to produce $CO_x$ and $NO_x$-free hydrogen for PEM fuel cells, oil refineries, ammonia and methanol production. We present the results of a systematic study of methane direct cracking using a mixed conducting oxide, Y-doped $BaZrO_3$ ($BaZr_{0.85}Y_{0.15}O_3$), membrane. In this paper, dense $BaZr_{0.85}Y_{0.15}O_3$ membrane with disk shape was successfully sintered at $1400^{\circ}C$ with a relative density of more 93% via addition of 1 wt% ZnO. The ($BaZr_{0.85}Y_{0.15}O_3$) membrane is covered with Pd as catalyst for methane decomposition with an DC magnetron sputtering method. Reaction temperature was $800^{\circ}C$ and high purity methane as reactant was employed to membrane side with 1.5 bar pressure. The $H_2$ produced by the reaction was transported through mixed conducting oxide membrane to the outer side. In addition, it was observed that the carbon, by-product, after methane direct cracking was deposited on the Pd/ZnO-$BaZr_{0.85}Y_{0.15}O_3$ membrane. The produced carbon has a shape of sphere and nanosheet, and a particle size of 80 to 100 nm.
In the steam reforming of methane reactions, the effect of adding noble metals Ru and Pd to a Ni-based catalyst as promoters was analyzed in terms of catalytic activity and hydrogen production. The synthesized catalysts were coated on the surface of a honeycomb-structured metal monolith to perform steam methane reforming reactions. The catalysts were characterized by XRD, TPR, and SEM, and after the reforming reaction, the gas composition was analyzed by GC to measure methane conversion, hydrogen yield, and CO selectivity. The addition of 0.5 wt% Ru improved the reduction properties of the Ni catalyst and exhibited enhanced catalytic activity with a methane conversion of 99.91%. In addition, reaction characteristics were analyzed according to various process conditions. Methane conversion of over 90% and hydrogen yield of more than 3.3 were achieved at a reaction temperature of 800 ℃, a gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of less than 10000 h-1, and a ratio of H2O to CH4 (S/C) higher than 3.
Direct decomposition of hydrocarbon (methane, propane) was studied using a thermal plasma to produce high purity hydrogen and carbon black. Thermodynamic equilibrium compositions were calculated based on the minimization of Gibb's free energy, and decomposition experiments were performed on the basis of calculation results. The purity of hydrogen was found to be depended strongly on the flow rate of hydrocarbon. The decomposition conditions for high purity hydrogen were investigated. The purity of hydrogen produced from methane decomposition was higher than that from propane. In the case of propane, it was investigated that by products such as methane, acetylene, and ethane etc., by radical recombination under thermal plasma were produced more than that of methane. Produced carbon blacks were characterized by material analyses, such as XRD, Raman spectroscopy, SEM, and particle size analysis. In both methane and propane decompositions, well-crystallized carbon blacks were produced and showed uniform and sphere-like morphologies. The size of carbon black synthesized from methane was observed to be smaller than that from propane.

This work was focused on the thermal decomposition of methane into hydrogen and carbon black without emitting carbon dioxide. Extensive experimental investigation on the thermal decomposition of methane has been carried out using a continuous flow reaction system with tubular reactor. The experiments were conducted at the atmospheric pressure condition in the wide range of temperature ($950-1150^{\circ}C$) and flow rate (250 - 1500 ml/min) in order to study their dependency on hydrogen yield. During the experiments the carbon black was successfully recovered as an useful product. Undesirable pyrocarbon was also formed as solid film, which was deposited on the inside surface of tubular reactor. The film of pyrocarbon in the reactor wall became thicker and thicker, finally blocking the reactor. The design of an efficient reactor which can effectively suppress the formation of pyrocarbon was thought to be one of the most important subjects in the thermal cracking of methane.
In the present study, the combustion characteristics of methane and hydrogen-supplemented methane as alternative fuels for automotive vehicles were investigated at various hydrogen substitution rate, ignition position and ignition methods in a CVCC. The main results obtained from the study can be summarized as follow. In case of center ignition and neat methane-air mixture, the flame propagation processes are propagated with an elliptical shape, but they are changed an instable elliptical shape flame with very regular cells and higher velocity by increasing the hydrogen supplement rate. In case of side, 0.5R ignition and neat methane-air mixture, the flame propagation processes are propagated with an instable elliptical shape flame, but they are changed from an instable elliptical shape to wedge shape flame with very irregular cells and higher velocity by increasing the hydrogen supplement rate. Although the flame propagation shape with ignition position and ignition devices was not differ, the flame area of MSCDI device was a little larger than it of CDI device at the same time.
