Complex Formation of Syndiotactic Poly(methacrylic acid) with Complementary Polymers through Hydrogen Bonding

  • Complex formations between syndiotactic poly(methacrylic acid) (st-PMAA) and poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP), and that between st-PMAA and polyethyleneoxide (PEO) through hydrogen bonding were studied by viscometry and potentiometry. Reduced viscosity (${\eta}_{red}$) was measured at various mole fraction of PVP or PEO with respect to a constant amount of st-PMAA. Observation shows a sharp minimum at the 1:1 mole ratio of st-PMAA:PVP or st-PMAA:PEO, which shows that the complexation becomes optimal and the complex has a compact structure in this ratio. Variation of pH also supports this conclusion. This is the case of the system of st-PMAA and PVP in water as well as in DMF. Also the complexation is much enhanced when the molecular weight of PVP is high. Meanwhile, the system of st-PMAA and PEO shows a little different behavior, i.e., this system does not form the complex in DMF and does only in water. It is because the interaction st-PMAA with PEO is weaker than that with PVP.

Microencapsulation of Nalidixic Acid Using Eudragit RL (Nalidixic Acid의 Eudragit RL Microencapsulation에 관한 연구)

  • Microencapsulation of nalidixic acid using Eudragit RL, a methacrylic acid copolymer was investigated. Microcapsules were prepared by dispersing the drug solution in liquid paraffing using aluminium tristearate as dispersing agent. The preparation of the microcapsules showed high reprodulibility in particle size, shape and the drug content. The dissolution rates of Nalidixic acid from the these microcapsules considerably decreased as compared with that from Nalidixic acid powder and Nalidixic acid-Eudragit RL solid dispersions. The release of Nalidixic acid increased with increasing percentage of aluminium tristearate added to the microcapsules.

Preparation and Characterization of Proton Conducting Crosslinked P(VDF-co-CTFE)-MAA/SEMA membranes (수소이온 전도성 가교된 P(VDF-co-CTFE)-MAA/SEMA 막 제조 및 분석)

  • Poly(vinylidenefluoride-co-chlorotrifluoroethylene) P(VDF-co-CTFE) polymer was attached to methacrylic acid (MAA) in the presence of 1,8-diazabicyclo[5,4,0]undec-7-ene(DBU) catalyst to prepare P(VDF-co-CTFE)-MAA copolymer. The modified P(VDF-co-CTFE)-MAA was polymerized with 2-sulfoethyl methacrylate (SEMA) monomer in the presence of 4',4'-azobis(4-cyanovaleric acid(ACVA) initiator by free radical polymerization to form the proton conducting membrane. The ratio of the SEMA was increased in the membrane to increase the presence of the acidic group. The maximum IEC value that was observed at 50% SEMA was around 0.82 meq/g, which is consistent with the water uptake value. The highest proton conductivity achieved by P(VDF-co-CTFE)-MAA/SEMA membrane with 50% SEMA was approximately 0.041 S/cm. This indicates that the available ionic group for the proton conduction increases with the increase in the SEMA in the membrane.

Change of Ink Absorption Characteristics of Ink-Jet Printing Paper with Polymeric Binder (바인더용 고분자 첨가제에 따른 잉크젯 인화지의 잉크흡수 특성변화)

  • The coating material for the ink-jet printing paper tends to be waterbase as the waterbase ink-jet ink is used more widely. Waterbase coating material consists of alumina sol as a pigment, poly(vinyl alcohol) as a main binder and polymeric additive for improving properties. In this study, polymeric auditive was synthesized by combining one or toto monomers among methacrylic acid, acrylic acid and acrylamide to the basic monomers, styrene and n-butylacrylate. The properties of printability such as ink absorption, ink spreading, and optical density, glossiness and water resistance were investigated by changing the kinds of surfactants, the composition of monomers and the structure of polymer particles. Results showed that materials containing anionic surfactant and/or acrylic acid had problems in com-patibility with alumina sol. Also, coating materials containing acrylamide had good printability and lout glossiness while those containing methacrylic acid did not have good printability and high glossiness.

  • The polycarboxylic (PC) type concrete superplasticizer was synthesized. The effects of ethylene oxide group number and its molecular weight on the properties of the polycarboxylic type concrete superplasticizer and the concrete motar properties were studied. To investigated of the interfacial properties of the premixed-concrete with the superplasticizer, the type and the amount of polyethylene glycol, meta acrylate added, and type of the initialization agent were studied. Also the interfacial properties of the superplasticizer aqueous phase, the wettability on the cement particle, the fluidity of the cement mortar, and the strength properties of the concrete were measured. For a high fluidity of the cement mortar and a high strength of concrete, a low value of the surface tension and contact angle were required for PC. To have a good performance for PC, the reaction condition of 1.3 mol ratio of MA against to MPEG was suitable with KSP initiator.

  • There have been many efforts to use anionic hydrogels as oral protein delivery carriers due to their pH-responsive swelling behavior. The dynamic swelling behavior of poly(methacrylic acid-co-methacryloxyethyl glucoside) [P(MAA-co-MEG)] hydrogels was investigated to determine the mechanism of water transport through these anionic hydrogels. The exponential relation $M_t/M_{\infty}=kt^n$ was used to calculate the exponent, n, describing the Fickian or non-Fickian behavior of swelling polymer networks. The mechanism of water transport through these gels was significantly affected by the pH of the swelling medium. The mechanism of water transport became more relaxation-controlled in the swelling medium of pH 7.0 that was higher than the $pK_a$ of the gels. Experimental results of time-dependent swelling behavior of the gels were analyzed with several mathematical models. Using ATR-FTIR spectroscopy, the effect of ionization of the carboxylic acid groups in the polymer networks on the water transport mechanism was investigated.

Studies on Adhesion Properties of Grafted EPDM Containing Carboxylic Acid Group (카르복시산을 포함하는 Grafted EPDM의 접착특성에 관한 연구)

  • The effect of the grafting ratio on the mechanical property and adhesion property of the grafted EPDM modified with methacrylic acid (MA) was investigated. The storage modulus of MA-grafted EPDM was maintained higher than that of cross-linked EPDM vulcanizate by sulfur, but it was observed that the storage modulus was decreased at elevated temperature because of the weakened secondary bonding. When the functional group for hydrogen bonding was introduced in EPDM, it had excellent mechanical properties by the aggregate between grafted EPDM molecules and crystallinity of MA. The bonding strength between EPDM and other rubbers was very low because EPDM has nonpolar property and low molecular interaction to others. The bonding strength was increased as increasing grafting ratio and it was excellent enough to break the rubber during the peel test when the grafting ratio was more than 10%.

방사능 고정화에 있어서 PVA-PMAA 계의 화학적 특성적 특성

  • Poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA)-poly(methacrylic acid)(PMAA) 계의 방사능 고정화에 대한 일련의 실험을 수행하였다. 전위차 적정 데이터와 FT-IR spectra 를 해석하여 PVA-PMAA 계의 화학적 특성을 설명하였다. 인위적으로 오염시킨 모래에 대한 침출실험 결과, $^{241}$Am, $^{154,155}$ Eu, $^{144}$ Ce의 전이 계수가 $^{l34,137}$ Cs 에 비해 높은 것으로 나타났다. 실험에 사용된 고분자 용액중, PVA-PMAA 계는 전체 방사능의 85% 이상을 차지하는 Cs 의 고정화에 효과적이었다.
