  • This paper suggests a method for tuning a numerically simulated wind speed data, provided by NIMR(National Institute of Meteorological Research) and generated from a numerical meteorological model to improve a wind resource map with a $1Km{\times}1Km$ resolution. To this end, "tuning factor method" is developed that consists of two procedures. First, estimate monthly wind fields based on a suitably designed statistical wind field model that covers 345,682 regions obtained by $1Km{\times}1Km$ lattice sites in South Korea. The second procedure computes the tuning factor and then tunes the generated wind speeds of each month as well as each lattice site. The second procedure is based on the wind fields estimated by the first procedure. The performance of the suggested tuning method is demonstrated by using two wind data(both TMY and numerically simulated wind speed data) of 75 weather station areas.

  • In the complex terrain where local wind systems are formed, accurate understanding of regional wind variability is required for wind resource assessment. In this paper, cluster analysis based on the similarity of time-series wind vector was applied to classify wind regions with similar wind characteristics and the meteorological validity of regionalization method was evaluated. Wind regions in Jeju Island and Busan were classified using the wind resource map of Korea created by a mesoscale numerical weather prediction modeling. The evaluation was performed by comparing wind speed, wind direction, and wind variability of each wind region. Wind characteristics, such as mean wind speed and prevailing wind direction, in the same wind region were similar and wind characteristics in different wind regions were meteor-statistically distinct. It was able to identify a singular wind region at the top area of Mt. Halla using the inconsistency of wind direction variability. Furthermore, it was found that the regionalization results correspond with the topographic features of Jeju Island and Busan, showing the validity.

  • To construct the wind map for mainland Korea, the well designed atmospheric numerical modeling system was used. Three nest domains were construced with spatial resolutions between $10{\times}10km$ up to the hightest resolution of $1{\times}1km$. Parameterization schemes like MRF(PBL), RRTM(radiation), Grell(cumulus) were chosen since wind data simulated is in better agreement with the observed wind data. High-resolution atmospheric numerical model was applied to simulate the motion of the atmosphere and to produce the wind map around the South Korea. The results of several simulations were improved compare to the past system, because of using the fine geographical data, such as terrain height and land-use data, and the meteorological data assimilation.

  • Day ahead forecast is necessary for the electricity market to stabilize the electricity penetration. Numerical weather prediction is usually employed to produce the solar irradiance as well as electric power forecast for longer than 12 hours forecast horizon. Korea Meteorological Administration operates the UM-LDAPS model to produce the 36 hours forecast of hourly total irradiance 4 times a day. This study interpolates the hourly total irradiance into 15 minute instantaneous irradiance and then compare them with observed solar irradiance at four ground stations at 1 minute resolution. Numerical weather prediction model employed here was produced at 00 UTC or 18 UTC from January to December, 2018. To compare the statistical model for the forecast horizon less than 3 hours, smart persistent model is used as a reference model. Relative root mean square error of 15 minute instantaneous irradiance are averaged over all ground stations as being 18.4% and 19.6% initialized at 18 and 00 UTC, respectively. Numerical weather prediction is better than smart persistent model at 1 hour after simulation began.

  • In order to understand regional wind characteristics and to estimate offshore wind resources, a wind map of the Korean Peninsula was established using remote-sensing data from the satellite, U.S. NASA Quik SCAT which has been deployed for the Sea Winds Project since 1999. According to the linear regression result between the wind map data and in-situ marine-buoy data, the correlation factor was greatly improved up to 0.87 by blending the remote-sensing data of Quik SCAT with U.S. NCEP/NCAR CDAS reanalysis data to eliminate precipitation interference and to increase temporal resolution. It is found from the established wind map that the wind speed in winter is prominent temporally and the South Sea shows spatially high energy density over the wind class 6. The reason is deduced that the north-west winds through the Yellow Sea and the north-east winds through the East Sea derived by the low pressure developed in Japan are accelerated passing through the Korea Channel and formed high wind energy region in the South Sea; the same trends are confirmed from the statistical analysis of the meteorological observation data of KMA.

  • Because reservoirs that supply irrigation water play an important role in water resource management, it is necessary to evaluate the vulnerability of this particular water supply resource. The purpose of this study is to provide water supply risk maps of agricultural reservoirs in South Korea using irrigation vulnerability model and cluster analysis. To quantify water supply risk, irrigation vulnerability indices are estimated to evaluate the performance of the water supply on the agricultural reservoir system using a probability theory and reliability analysis. First, the irrigation vulnerability probabilities of 1,346 reservoirs managed by Korea Rural Community Corporation (KRC) were analyzed using meteorological data on 54 meteorological stations over the past 30 years (1981-2010). Second, using the K-mean method of non-hierarchical cluster analysis and pre-simulation approach, cluster analysis was applied to classify into three groups for characterizing irrigation vulnerability in reservoirs. The morphology index, watershed area, irrigated area, and ratio between watershed and irrigated area are selected as the clustering analysis parameters. It is suggested that the water supply risk map be utilized as a basis for the establishment of risk management measures, and could provide effective information for a reasonable decision making on drought risk mitigation.

  • Investigations on modeling methods of a CFD wind resource prediction program, WindSim for a ccurate predictions of wind speeds were performed with the field measurements. Meteorological Masts having heights of 40m and 50m were installed at two different sites in complex terrain. The wind speeds and direction were monitored from sensors installed on the masts and recorded for one year. Modeling parameters of WindSim input variables for accurate predictions of wind speeds were investigated by performing cross predictions of wind speeds at the masts using the measured data. Four parameters that most affect the wind speed prediction in WindSim including the size of a topographical map, cell sizes in x and y direction, height distribution factors, and the roughness lengths were studied to find out more suitable input parameters for better wind speed predictions. The parameters were then applied to WindSim to predict the wind speed of another location in complex terrain in Korea for validation. The predicted annual wind speeds were compared with the averaged measured data for one year from meteorological masts installed for this study, and the errors were within 6.9%. The results of the proposed practical study are believed to be very useful to give guidelines to wind engineers for more accurate prediction results and time-saving in predicting wind speed of complex terrain that will be used to predict annual energy production of a virtual wind farm in complex terrain.
