  • The viscosities of $CaO-SiO_2-Al_2O_3-MgO$ flux were measured under the condition of $CaO/SiO_2=1.0-1.3$ and 5-20 wt%MgO. Submerged arc welding flux with $5wt%Al_2O_3$ content had the lowest critical temperature and widest solid-liquid coexisting region at about 5 wt%MgO. It indicateds that both critical temperature and viscosity depend on the kind of primary phase of molten flux. Viscous behavior of the molten flux at 1773 K was analyzed in the view of silicate structure changed by FT-IR spectroscopy. Based on the critical temperature and the behavior of viscosity at a fixed temperature, it could be proposed that the contents of MgO and $Al_2O_3$ in SAW flux show a pronounced effect on preventing contamination in maintaining the liquid phase flux after welding process.

  • Beta-titanium alloys are used in many industries due to their increased elongation resulting from their BCC structure and low modulus of elasticity. However, there are many limitations to their use due to the high cost of beta-stabilizer elements. In this study, biocompatible Ti-Mo-Fe beta titanium alloys are designed by replacing costly beta-stabilizer elements (e.g., Nb, Zr, or Ta) with inexpensive Mo and Fe elements. Additionally, Ti-Mo-Fe alloys designed with different Fe contents are fabricated using powder metallurgy. Fe is a strong, biocompatible beta-stabilizer element and a low-cost alloying element. The mechanical properties of the Ti-Mo-Fe metastable beta titanium alloys are analyzed in relation to the microstructural changes. When the Fe content increases, the tensile strength and elongation decrease due to brittle fracture despite a decreasing pore fraction. It is confirmed that the hardness and tensile strength of Ti-5Mo-2Fe P/M improve to more than 360 Hv and 900 MPa, respectively.

  • A Fe-Ni Bainitic steel as a weathering steel application was developed by combining its excellent mechanical properties and corrosion resistance in maritime environments. Nickel concentration (0.4-3 wt%) and inverted austempering multi-step (IAM) process were primary determinants of the microstructure of the Fe-Ni Bainitic steel. The initial austempering steel was performed at 300 ℃ for 600 seconds to obtain a partly bainitic transformation. The steel was heated again for 1800 s at 450 ℃. The microstructure was comprised of ferrite, a blocky martensite/austenite island, and a homogeneous lath-shape bainite structure with widths ranging from 4.67 to 6.89 ㎛. The maximum strength, 1480 MPa, was obtained with 3 wt% nickel. In this study, corrosion behavior was investigated utilizing potentiodynamic and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) tests. A higher nickel content in Fe-Ni Bainitic steel refined the grain size, improved the bainite fraction, lowered the corrosion rate to 0.0257 mmpy, and increased the charge transfer of film resistance to 1369 Ω.

  • The microstructure of medium-carbon non-heat treated steels by air-cooling shows ferritepearlite structure. Compared to the conventional Q/T steels, the strength of these steels containing V, Nb and Ti are similar to Q/T steels. However, their toughness are inferior. In this study, the mechanical properties and microstructures of low-carbon Mo bearing steels produced by direct-quenching process were investigated. Especially, the effect of Mo on the direct-quenched steels was examined. The direct-quenched steels containing Mo were found to have higher strength and toughness. Mo seemed to be effective in producing the fine structure and dense precipitates because of decreasing transformation temperature. The best results were 1211 MPa in UTS and 127.5 J in toughness in the oil quenched 0.15C+O.llV+ 0.035Nb+ 1.81Mo steel. Compared to 0.4% C microalloyed steels, this results showed that UTS increased by 45% and toughness by 2 times.

  • In this paper, we reported an outbreak of fire hazard of ballast for fluorescent lamp. The surface structure and composition of ballast coil analyzed by using metallurgical microscope, scanning electron microscope(SEM) and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy(EDX). The surface of molten mark appeared columnar structure and void. EDX analysis indicated that the molten mark spectra were composed not only of the corresponding original spectra but also of several new lines.

  • In PECVD(Plasma-Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition) process, titanium nitride is thin and its adhesion is poor for the protective coatings. Therefore it has been studied that intermediate layer forms between substrate and TiN thin film. Using R.F. plasma nitriding, nitride layer was first formed, then TiN thin film coated by PECVD. The chemical composition of the coatings has been characterized using AES, EDS and their crystallographic structure by means of XRD. Mechanical properties such as microhardness and film adhesion have also been determined by vickers hardness test, scratch test and indentation test. As a result, there was no difference in chemical composition and structure between the TiN deposition only and the composite of TiN deposition on nitrided steel. It was found that nitrided substrate increased the hardness of TiN coatings and was beneficial in preventing the plastic deformation in the substrate. Therefore the effective load bearing capacity of the TiN coatings on nitrided steel was increased and their adhesion was improved as well. According to the results of this study, the processes that lead to the formation of composite layers characterized by good working properties, i.e., high microhardness, adhesion and resistance to deformation.

  • A small amount of misch metal and/or Zr was added as a dopant to 70.5wt----Cu-26wt----Zn-3.5wt----Al shape memory alloy in order to study the effect of grain refinement and heat treatments on the transformation behavior, stabilization of martensite, and shape memory ability. It was found that the addition of misch metal and Zr was very effective for reducing the grain size. The fracture mode has been changed from intergranular brittle fracture to ductile fracture with void formation and coalescence by the addition of misch metal and Zr. Aging of the ${\beta}$-phase decreases the $M_s$ temperature, but that of the martensite phase increases the $A_s$ temperature. The hysteresis of transformation temperature ${\Delta}T(A_s-M_s)$ has an increasing tendancy by grain refinement. The crystal structure of martensite was identified as monoclinic structure. As the grain size decreased, martensite stabilization more easily occured and the shape, memory ability has been reduced by the grain size refined.

  • The tensile properties of high manganese austenitic stainless steel with the two phase structures of deformation-induced martensite and reversed austenite were studied. Reversed austenite with an ultra-fine grain size of less than $0.3{\mu}m$ was obtained by reversion treatment. The two phases structures of deformation-induced martensite and reversed austenite were obtained by an annealing treatment in the range of $500^{\circ}C-700^{\circ}C$ for various times in 70% cold- rolled high-manganese austenitic stainless steel. The volume fraction of the reversed austenite increased rapidly with increases in the annealing temperature and time. In the stainless steel with the two phases of austenite and martensite, the strength decreased rapidly, while the elongation increased slowly and then rapidly increased with an increase in the volume fraction of the reversed austenite. Therefore, the strength and elongation were strongly controlled by the volume fraction of reversed austenite. A good combination of high strength and elongation could be obtained by the mixed structure of reversed austenite and deformation-induced martensite.

  • When the low temperature service steels are used as materials for welded structure, some problems-brittleness and weld cracking, etc.-occur in welded part due to the change of mechanical and metallurgical characteristics resulted from the thermal cycle during the welding procedure. In this study, the experiments were conducted to investigate the change of mechanical and metallurgical characteristics of the welded part for the low temperature and high pressure service steels. Moreover, the Static and Dynamic Implant Test Method was introduced to this study in order to find out the mechnism of weld cracking. In addition, the fracture toughnesses of welded bond were inspected under the various low temperature environments. Main results obtained are as follows; 1) The effect of the hydrogen on the fatigue characteristics of the weld bond can be estimated by the new self-contrived Dynamic Implant Test equipment. 2) The fine micro-structure and low hardness in the heat affected zone can be obtained by the small heat input multi-pass welding. 3) The susceptibility of the delayed cracking is largely affected by the condition of used electrode. 4) The transition temperature of the fracture surface in weld bond appears to be higher 20 .deg. C than that in base metal.
