  • Solar reforming of methane with $CO_2$ was successfully tested with a direct irradiated absorber on a parabolic dish capable of $5kW_{th}$ solar power. The new type of catalytically activated metallic foam absorber was prepared, and its activity was tested. Ni was applied as the active metal on the gamma - alumina coated Ni metal foam for the preparation of the catalytically-activated metal foam layer. Compared to conventional direct irradiation of the catalytically-activated ceramic foam absorber, this new metallic foam absorber is found to exhibit a superior reaction performance at the relatively low insolation or at low temperatures. In addition, unlike direct irradiation of the catalytically-activated ceramic foam absorber, metallic foam absorber has better thermal resistance, which prevents the emergence of cracks caused by mechanical or thermal shock. The total solar power absorbed reached up to 2.1kW and the maximum $CH_4$ conversion was almost 40%.

  • Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) was carried out in heat-exchanger typed reactor with cobalt metallic foam catalyst. Considering the heat and mass transfer limitations in the cobalt catalyst, a Co-foam catalyst with an inner metallic foam frame and an outer cobalt catalyst was developed. The Co-foam catalyst was highly selective toward liquid hydrocarbon production and the liquid hydrocarbon productivity at $203^{\circ}C$ reached to $52.5ml/(kg_{cat}{\cdot}h)$, which was higher than that obtained by the Co-pellet. Furthermore, the heat-exchanger typed reactor was developed to efficiently control the highly exothermic reaction heat. The reaction heat generated in the FTS reaction on the cobalt active site was easily transferred to reactor wall by the metallic foam in the catalyst and the transferred reaction heat was directly removed by the hot oil which circulated the wall side of the heat-exchanger typed reactor.

  • In this paper, a modified and representative unit cell model was employed to study the crush behaviour of a closed cell metallic foam. The unit cell which captures the main geometrical features of the metallic foam considered was used to simulate crush behaviour in metallic foams. Both analytical using limit analysis and numerical using the finite element method were used to study the collapse behaviour of the cell. The analytical crushing stress of the foam was compared with FE results and was found to be in good agreement.

  • Since metallic foam will increase the performance of heat exchanger, it have caused many researcher's attention recently. Our research base on the model that metallic foams applied to heat exchanger. In this case, there is three kind of heat transfer mechanisms, heat conduction in fibers, heat transfer by conduction in fluid phase, and internal heat change between solid and fluid phases. In this paper, we first discuss the acceptance of applying thermal equilibrium among the two phases. then to calculate the dimensionless temperature profile along 7 metallic foams. The 7 samples have different characteristics, such as area ratio, effective conductivity, porosity, etc.

  • To enhancement heat transfer performance, the metallic foam as heat exchanger was studied rapidly. This was attributed to its high surface area to volume ratio as well as intensive flow mixing by tortuous flow passages. So the experimental study about the heat transfer characteristic of metallic foam is presented in this paper. The material in this experiment was used as FeCrAl which has density of 10 ppi, 20 ppi and 30 ppi respectively. And the results show the heat transfer is rise with permeability Reynolds number increase and the pressure drop metallic foam was increased with the ppi increase.

  • In this study, steam reforming reaction and surface characteristics of Ni metal foam plate were investigated. Valence state of Ni could be changed by pretreatment, and metallic Ni species exposed on surface as a active site play important role in steam reforming reaction. Porous catalytic membrane also was prepared by mixing of Ni metal foam plate and Ni-YSZ catalyst to control the pore size and assign the catalytic function in Ni metal foam plate. In SEM analysis results, Pore size of Ni metal foam plate could be controlled and Ni-YSZ catalyst well dispersed on surface. Ni based porous catalytic membrane had a similar steam reforming activity regardless of space velocity.

  • The Fe-22wt.%Cr-6wt.%Al foams were fabricated via the powder alloying process in this study. The structural characteristics, microstructure, and mechanical properties of Fe-Cr-Al foams with different average pore sizes were investigated. Result of the structural analysis shows that the average pore sizes were measured as 474 ㎛ (450 foam) and 1220 ㎛ (1200 foam). Regardless of the pore size, Fe-Cr-Al foams had a Weaire-Phelan bubble structure, and α-ferrite was the major constituent phase. Tensile and compressive tests were conducted with an initial strain rate of 10-3/s. Tensile yield strengths were 3.4 MPa (450 foam) and 1.4 MPa (1200 foam). Note that the total elongation of 1200 foam was higher than that of 450 foam. Furthermore, their compressive yield strengths were 2.5 MPa (450 foam) and 1.1 MPa (1200 foam), respectively. Different compressive deformation behaviors according to the pore sizes of the Fe-Cr-Al foams were characterized: strain hardening for the 450 foam and constant flow stress after a slight stress drop for the 1200 foam. The effect of structural characteristics on the mechanical properties was also discussed.

  • The usage of sandwich structure is extensively increasing in lightweight protective structures due to its low density and other useful properties. Sandwich panels made of metal sheets with unfilled cellular cores are found to exhibit lower deflections by comparing to an equivalent monolithic plate of same metal and similar mass per unit density. However, the process of localized impact on solid structures involving plastic deformation, high strain rates, temperature effect, material erosion, etc. does not hold effectively as that of monolithic plate. In present work, the applications of the sandwich plate with corrugated core have been extended to develop optimized lightweight armour using foam as medium of its core by explicit finite element analysis (FEA). The mechanisms of hardened steel projectile penetration of aluminum corrugated sandwich panels filled with foams have been numerically investigated by finite element analysis (FEA). A comparative study is done for the triangular corrugated sandwich plate filled with polymeric foam and metallic foam with different densities in order to achieve the optimum penetration resistance to ballistic impact. Corrugated sandwich plates filled with metallic foams are found to be superior when compared to the polymeric one. The optimized results are then compared with that of equivalent solid and unfilled cores structure to observe the effectiveness of foam-filled corrugated sandwich plate which provides an effective resistance to ballistic response. The novel structure can be the alternative to solid aluminum plate in the applications of light weight protection system.

  • Metallic foams have a combination of attractive properties such as high specific mechanical properties and good energy absorption characteristics. This paper presents the properties of steel foam sandwiches produced using powder metallurgy approach. Metallic powder, solid polymeric binder and a foaming agent are dry-mixed and molded into the desired shape. The molded powder mix is then heat-treated to foam, debind and sinter the material. The resulting material has an open cell structure with high porosity. The structure and properties of sandwiches specimens produced with the process are presented and discussed.
