  • In the recent years, environmentally conscious design and manufacturing technologies have attracted considerable attention. The coolants, lubricants, solvents, metallic chips and discarded tools from manufacturing operations will harm our environment and the earth's ecosystem. In the present work, the Tukey method of multiple comparisons is used to select the minimum level of coolant required in a turning process. The amount of coolant is varied in 270 designed experiments and the parameters cutting temperature, surface roughness, and specific cutting energy are carefully evaluated. The effects of coolant mix ratio as well as the amount of coolant on the turning process are studied in the present work. The cutting temperature and surface roughness for different quantity of coolant are investigated by analysis of variance (ANOVA) - test and a multiple comparison method. ANOVA-test results signify that the average tool temperature and surface roughness depend on the amount of coolant. Based on Tukey's Honestly Significant Difference (HSD) method, one of the multiple comparison methods, the minimum level of coolant is 1.0 L/min with 2% mix ratio in the aspect of controlling tool temperature. F-test concludes that the amount of coolant used does not have any significant effect on specific cutting energy. Finally, Tukey method ascertains that 0.5 L/min with 6% mix ratio is the minimum level of coolant required in turning process without any serious degradation of the surface finish. Considering all aspects of cutting, the minimum coolant required is 1.0 L/min with 6% mix ratio. It is merely half the coolant currently used i.e. 2.0 L/min with 10% mix ratio. Minimal use of coolant not only economically desirable for reducing manufacturing cost but also it imparts fewer hazards to human health. Also, sparing use of coolant will eventually transform the turning process into a more environment-conscious manufacturing process.

  • The corrosion of the metallic cell components is blown to be one of the major reason f3r the performance degradation and subsequently the life-time limitation of the MCFC. To elucidate the corrosion phenomena, a corrosion study with the AISI-type 316L stainless steel, the most widely used separator material, in 621Li/38K carbonate eutectic melt was carried out. Corrosion phenomena in an MCFC were observed to differ from one location to another due to different environmental condition. The stability of passive film was found to be responsible fur the variations in corrosion phenomena. According to the potentiodynamic analysis, the passive film formed in anode-gas environment was less stable than in cathode-gas environment. The potentiostatic method combined with XRD analysis in addition to the cyclicvoltammetry was conducted to get an insight on variety corrosion reaction of AISI-type 316L stainless steel in a carbonate melt.

  • Electrostatic precipitators (ESPs) used currently in industries for removing fine particles from semiconductors have to be made of expensive anticorrosive metallic materials in order to maintain their particle-removal performance. To satisfy the economical demands of industries, a novel ESP was developed; in this ESP, the charger is made of carbon fibers and collection plates consist of PET films among which an aluminum sheet is inserted. The ESP was evaluated by changing the voltages applied to the chargers and collection plates, flow rates, and number of charging channels. KCl particles with mean diameters of 100 nm were used, and a scanning mobility particle sizer was used to measure the changes in particle number concentrations upstream and downstream of the ESP. The experimental results showed that more than 90% of the particles were removed by using the ESP containing ionizers with nine channels and 65-mm collection plates at $500\;m^3/hr$ when voltages of 7 kV and 10 kV were applied to the ionizers and collection plates, respectively.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this survey was to assess the concentrations of heavy metals in the atmosphere of Pocheon City by measuring heavy metals in the industrial complex area and at the city air measuring station, and also to assess the degree of impact that the industrial area has on urban air quality. Methods: Sampling was carried out between February 2018 and November 2018 at two sites in the industrial complex and in the city air monitoring stations. Results: At the industrial complex in Pocheon City, air pollutant emitting businesses were emitting concentrations of fine dust (PM10) between 45 and 60 ㎍/㎥ higher than in the city air. The daily maximum concentrations of lead (Pb), manganese (Mn), and cadmium (Cd) in the industrial complex are below the WHO recommendation standard (annual average), and the impact on the urban atmosphere is judged to be insignificant. Three to five percent of fine dust (PM10) consists of metallic materials, and as the fine dust increased, metals were detected proportionally. Although cadmium (Cd) and beryllium (Be) were not detected in the city air in Pocheon and chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), and arsenic (As) were found to be 50 percent or less, it is deemed that copper (Cu) was detected at unusually high levels due to unknown air pollutants, which requires regular heavy metal measurement and cause verification. Conclusions: An analysis of the heavy metals in the industrial zone and the urban atmosphere in Pocheon City in this study showed that the linear relationship of heavy metals in the industrial zone, or the direct impact relationship, on the heavy metals in the urban atmosphere could not be estimated. The sampling device for equivalent assessment of particulate matter installed at air pollution monitoring stations is highly likely to be used for analysis of fine dust and heavy metals.

  • In this study, we investigate the effect of an Sb-deficiency on the thermoelectric properties of double-filled n-type skutterudite ($In_{0.05}Yb_{0.15}Co_4Sb_{12-x}$). Samples were prepared by encapsulated induction melting, consecutive long-time annealing, and finally spark plasma sintering processes. The Sb-deficient sample contained a $CoSb_2$ secondary phase. Both the double-filled n-type skutterudite pristine and Sb-deficient samples showed metallic behavior in electrical conductivity with increasing temperature. The carrier concentration of the Sb-deficient sample decreased compared with that of the pristine sample. Due to a decrease in carrier concentration, the Sb deficient sample showed decreased electrical conductivity and an increased Seebeck coefficient compared with the conductivity and coefficient of the pristine sample. Furthermore, the Sb deficient sample showed an increase in the power factor (${\sigma}{\cdot}S^2$); the power factor maximum shifted to athe lower temperature side than ones of the pristine sample. As a result, the Sb-deficient sample represents an improved average figure of merit (ZT) and a $ZT_{max}$ temperature lower than that of the pristine sample. Therefore, we propose that Sb-deficient double-filled n-type skutterudite thermoelectric material ($In_{0.05}Yb_{0.15}Co_4Sb_{12-x}$) be used in the 573~673 K temperature range.

  • The quality of real-time Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) network is affected by network impariments such as delays, jitters, and packet loss. This paper proposes a packet loss concealment algorithm based on voice classification for enhancing VoIP speech quality. In the proposed method, arriving packets are classified by an adaptive thresholding approach based on the analysis of multiple features of short signal segments. The excellent classification results are used in the packet loss concealment. Additionally, linear prediction-based packet loss concealment delivers high voice quality by alleviating the metallic artifacts due to concealing consecutive packet loss or recovering lost packet.

  • Stainless steels and titanium alloys are widely used in the medical industry as replacement materials. These materials may be affected by the conditions and type of environment. In the same manner, soft drinks are widely consumed products. It is of interest for dental industry to know the behavior of medical-grade alloys when these are in contact with soft drinks, since any excessive ion release can suppose a risk for human health. In the present study, the electrochemical behavior of three stainless steel alloys and pure titanium was analyzed using three types of cola soft drinks as electrolyte. The objective of this study was to evaluate the response of these metallic materials in each type of solution (cola standard, light and zero). Different electrochemical techniques were used for the evaluation of the alloys, namely potentiodynamic polarization, linear polarization, and open-circuit potential measurements. The corrosion resistance of the stainless-steel alloys and titanium in the cola soft drinks was provided by the formation of a stable passive film formed by metal oxides. Scanning electron microscopy was used as a complementary technique to reveal corrosion phenomena at the surface of the materials evaluated.

  • Advances in laser technology have yielded a multitude of innovative processes and applications in various industries. Laser peening is a typical example invented in the mid-1990s as a surface technology, which converted residual stress from tension to compression by just irradiating successive laser pulses to metallic materials under aqueous environment without any surface preparation. The effects of laser peening have been experimentally studied on residual stress, stress corrosion cracking(SCC) susceptibility and fatigue properties with water-penetrable frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser. In addition, laser peening has been widely used in aviation and aerospace industries, automobile manufacturing and nuclear plant. One of the most important causes to improve the above-mentioned properties is the deeper compressive residual stress induced by laser peening. Taking advantage of the process without reacting force against laser irradiation, a remote operating system was developed to apply laser peening to nuclear power reactors as a preventive maintenance measure against SCC.

  • Because of the toxicity of hexavelant chromium ion, treatments of metallic surface with chromate compounds to retard corrosion are undesirable for safety control in industrial uses and protection of environment. In this study, we investigated several compounds such as inorganic, organic, and polymer materials in order to substitute the chromate conversion treatment on steel sheet. The corrosion property was investigated in a salt spray tester with 3.5 $wt.{\%}\;NaCI\;at\;35^{\circ}C.$ The results showed that the zirconium/silane/polymer triple coatings on the galvanized steel exhibited a significant retardation of corrosion. Although the multicoating system needs a complexed processing, we can confirm a possibility of development of a chromate-free chemical conversion treatment for galvanized steel sheet.
