This study introduced wastewater treatment method by High Gradient Magnetic Separation (HGMS). HGMS treatment was high efficient method for various industrial wastewaters. The system is currently research state, but we have surveyed commercialize the technology for industry. In rolling plate process, coolant wastewater was recycled by sedimentation and sand filter system. It needs several large reservoirs and long time to remove suspended solid (SS) like metal fines and iron oxide in hot rolling plate making process. If removing rate of suspended solid in rolling coolant wastewater is improved by using HGMS system, the productivity of working process can be increased and the area of reservoir can be reduced. We manufactured high temperature superconducting HGMS system that had a purpose to treatment of coolant wastewater in rolling plate process. We fabricated the prototypes of magnetic matrix filter consisting of stainless steel 430 mesh, which is a core component in the magnetic separation system, In our basic preliminary experiment using HGMS system, it has been clear that the fine paramagnetic particles in the coolant wastewater obtained from rolling plate process of POSCO can be separated with high efficiency.
The fatigue life and tensile strength of JLF-1 steel (Fe-9Cr-2W-V-Ta) and its TIG weldment were investigated at the room temperature and $400^{\circ}C$. Four kinds of test specimens, which associated with the rolling direction and the TIG welding direction were machined. The base metal of JLF-1 steel represented almost anisotropy in the tensile properties for the rolling direction. And the base metal of JLF-1 steel showed lower strength than that of TIG weldment. Also, the strength of all materials entirely decreased in accordance with elevating test temperature. Moreover, the fatigue limit of weld metal was largely increase than that of base metal at both temperatures. The fatigue limit of JLF-1 steel decreased in accordance with elevating test temperature. The fatigue limit of JLF-1 steel decreased in accordance with elevating test temperature. The SEM fractography of tensile test specimen showed conspicuous cleavage fracture of a radial shape. In case of fatigue life test specimen, there were so many striations at crack initiation region, and dimple was observed at final fracture region as a ductile fracture mode.
The effect of rolling on the charge-discharge property was studied for metal hydride negative electrode. $(LM)Ni_{3.6}Al_{0.4}Co_{0.7}Mn_{0.3}$(pleateau pressure : below 1 atm at room temperature, volume expansion : 9%, entalpy : $8.7kcal/molH_2$) alloy was prepared by arc melting, and then it was coated with various copper weight percent. The copper coated alloys were then rolled with the different reduction ratio. From the results, it was found that the maximum discharge capacity increased with increasing reduction ratio, and 15wt% copper coated sample shows the highest discharge capacity, 324mAh/g, after rolling with 30% reduction ratio. In view of cycle life for the negative electrode, the 15wt% copper coated electrode which was rolled with 13% reduction ratio showed the longest cycle life compared with other electrodes.
A large amount of research has been performed on the rolling contact fatigue(RCF) life of bearings, since it directly affects the safety and reliability of mechanical systems. It is well known that rolling contact fatigue life is influenced by several parameters including contact pressure, oil contamination by water or metal particles, and the surface conditions of bearings. However, the detailed damage mechanisms involved in rolling contact fatigue have not been clearly identified yet. In this paper the effects of water contamination of the lubricant and surface roughness of bearing steel on the rolling contact fatigue life were investigated. Two types of specimens with different surface roughness values were prepared through turning and lapping operations. They were tested under two different lubrication conditions, i.e. oil lubricant with 100% of oil and the water contaminated condition with 80% of oil and 20% of water using the rolling contact fatigue testing machine. The surface damage induced by the rolling contact fatigue was observed by using atomic force microscope(AFM). Experimental results show that the rolling contact fatigue life, $L_{10}$ was reduced by 24 to 33% depending on the lubrication condition. The reduction of fatigue life in the range of 53 to 57% was also observed at different surface roughness conditions.
Uniaxial necking is studied for steel sheets with initial anisotropy. The state of anisotropy is continuously altered by subsequent tensile deformation at angles to the rolling direction. The orientations of orthotropy axes are changed before the onset of necking. A simple hardening rule which incorporates the rotations of orthtropy axes is proposed and the necking strains are predicted at angles to the rolling direction. Predicted results show good agreement with the experiments.
The plastic strain ratio is one of the factors that affect the deep drawability of metal sheets. The plastic strain ratio of fully annealed Cu sheet is low because its texture has {001}<100>. In order to improve the deep drawability of Cu sheet, it is necessary to increase the plastic strain ratio of Cu sheet. This study investigate the increase of plastic strain ratio of a Cu sheet after the first asymmetry rolling and annealing, and the second asymmetry rolling and annealing in air and Ar gas conditions. The average plastic strain ratio (Rm) was 0.951 and |ΔR| value was 1.27 in the initial Cu sheet. After the second 30.1% asymmetric rolling and annealing of Cu sheet at 1000℃ in air condition, the average plastic strain ratio (Rm) was 1.03 times higher. However, |ΔR| was 0.12 times lower than that of the initial specimen. After the second 18.8% asymmetric rolling and annealing of Cu sheet at 630℃ in Ar gas condition, the average plastic strain ratio (Rm) was 1.68 times higher and |ΔR| was 0.82 times lower than that of the initial specimen. These results are attributed to the change of the texture of Cu sheet due to the different annealing conditions.
Sticking behavior under the hot rolling conditions for ferritic stainless steels have been studied. Sticking, which is a phenomenon that the naked metal exposed to the surface by scale breakaway during hot rolling sticks to the roll surface, was affected by both high temperature tensile strength and oxidation resistance of the steels. A steel having higher tensile strength and lower oxidation resistance exhibits better resistance to the sticking. It is due to that higher tensile strength increases localized deformation resistance and lower oxidation resistance creates lower friction between steel and roll by forming thicker scale as a lubricant during hot rolling. So, the sticking tends to occur more severely in the order of 430J1L, 436L, 430 and 409L. The most sensitive temperature to the sticking was found to be 90$0^{\circ}C$ for all grade of steels. It was also found that the high speed steel(HSS) roll compared to the Hi-Cr roll was more beneficial to prevent sticking. Because higher surface hardness of HSS roll compared to that of Hi-Cr roll provides less nucleation sites for sticking such as scratch on the roll surface.
Two different modes of rolling were applied to control the texture development in tantalum sheet. In the conventional uni-directional rolling, the typical rolling textures of a body-centered cubic metal which was primarily composed of <110>//(rolling direction) was developed. In a cross rolling where the specimen was rotated by $90^{\circ}$ between each pass, the rotated cube components, i.e. {100}<011> were greatly reinforced. The prediction of lattice rotation by the full-constraint Taylor model showed that the high stability and the symmetry of the rotated cube components caused their strengthening in cross-rolling. The two specimens were heated to $1,100^{\circ}C$ at $9^{\circ}C/min$and held for 1 hour for annealing, then cooled to room temperature in atmosphere. In spite of the significant difference in the deformation textures, the annealing textures were very similar. They developed strong <111>//(plane normal) components with negligible intensity at the rotated cube components, which was attributed to the negligible capability of the latter components to provide effective recrystallized grains.
In the present study, the effect of initial microstructure, cold reduction ratio, and annealing temperature on the spherodization rate of SK85 high carbon steel sheet was investigated. High carbon steel sheet fabricated by POSCO was soaked at $800^{\circ}C$ for 2 hr in a box furnace and then treated at $570^{\circ}C$ for 5 min in a salt bath furnace followed by water quenching to obtain a fine pearlite structure. Cold rolling was conducted on the sheets of fine pearlite by reduction ratios of 20, 30, and 40% and heat treatment for spheroidization was carried out at 600 and $720^{\circ}C$ for the various time intervals from 0.1 to 32 hrs. Area fraction of spheroidized cementite was measured with an image analyzer as a function of cold reduction ratios and duration times.
Controlling the friction between wheel and rail is direct and very effective measures to improve the curving performances of railway trucks, because the curving performances depend much on friction characteristics. Authors have proposed a method, 'friction control', which utilizes friction modifier ($KELTRACK^{TM}$ HPF) with onboard spraying system. With the method, not only friction coefficient, but also friction characteristics can be controlled as expected. In this study, MBD simulation is very valuable tool to foresee the effect of the control in advance of experiment with real car. And the creep characteristics of wheel/rail contact with the friction modifier takes very important role in the simulation. In this paper, authors propose a theoretical model of wheel/rail contact condition considering the creep characteristics of friction modifier, which is derived the application of principle tribological theories.
