  • In search of new amphiphiles that form coordinatively polymerized bilayer membranes (CPBMs) in water, N-dodecyl-3-[2-hydroxy-3-(4-carboxymethyl-2-thiazolylazo)-5-methylphenyl]propanamide (5) was prepared. The bilayer membranes of 5 prepared in the presence of 2 equivalents of NaOH were further sonicated in the presence of transition metal ions such as Ni(Ⅱ), Cu(Ⅱ), Co(Ⅱ), or Co(Ⅲ) at > 80 ℃ to obtain CPBMs. The CPBMs of 5 were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, gel filtration, resistivity against disruption in aqueous ethanol, visible spectra, and release of entrapped 5(6)-carboxyfluorescein. Remarkable stabilization of the bilayer membranes through coordinative polymerization was evidenced by the resistivity of the Ni(Ⅱ)-CPBM of 5 against disruption in 40%(v/v) ethanol upon incubation for 20 hr.

  • Molecular orbital calculations at the extended Huckel level have been carried out for an electron deficient cluster, $Tl_3(FeL_3)_2{(FeL_4)_3}^{-3}$, where L=CO or $H^-$. The LUMO, $2a_2$", is destabilized by the secondary interaction of the LUMO with $1a_2$" on $(FeL_3)_2$ fragment. This is one of six skeletal bonding orbitals which are associated with $Tl-FeL_3$ bonds. Overlap population analysis has been applied to account for two kinds of Tl-Fe bonds. Replacement of the terminal $C_{3v}$, $FeL_4$, by the $C_{2v}$, $FeL_4$ units in cluster results in slight energy stabilization of the cluster.

  • Nanoparticles have received significant attention because of their unusual characteristics including high surface area to volume ratios. Thiol ligand have been used as stabilizers of metal nanoparticles since Brust et al. They reported the preparation method of ligand capped metal nanoparticles by protecting the nanoparticles with a self-assembled monolayer of dodecanethiolate. In this method, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were used as sovents. This study was carried out to replace these VOCs with room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs). We used two type of ILs to prepare metal nanoparticles. One is a hydrophobic IL, [BMIM][[$PF_6$] (1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate) purchased from IL maker, C-Tri from Korea and the other one is a hydrophilic one, [BMIM][Cl] (1-Buthy-3-methylimdazolium chloride) sinthesized by us. In the case of preparing Ag and Au nanoparticles using [BMIM][Cl], we didn't use phase transition reagents and ethanol because it has hydrophilic property and preparing Au, Ag nanoparticles using [BMIM][[$PF_6$] the method is as same as Brust et al.'s except using [BMIM][[$PF_6$] instead of organic solvent because it has hydrophobic property. FT-IR and UV-vis, TEM, TGA analysis have been used in an attempt to determine the particle size and verify functional groups. The particle size obtained from TEM was very similar to those obtained by Brust et al. This is a clear example of ligand capped metal nanoparticles prepared using ionic liquids. And the experimental result demonstrated ionic liquids can act as a highly effective medium for the preparation and stabilization of gold and silver metal nanoparticles.

  • This study is to compare the differences of bonding strength based on the Degassing temperatures and various opaque materials for Ni-Cr alloy specimen which does not contain beryllium(Be). Numerous comparison tests have been performed to measure the bonding strength by experimenting 3-point flexural rigidity tests in order to find out ways of stabilization and enhancement of bonding strength between metal and porcelain. AVOVA, surface component observation experiment by SAM/EDS, and Tukey's HSAD posteriori tests results are as follows: First, The bonding strength in all groups has exceeded the minimum (25MPa) of ISO9693 bonding strength regulation for dental mental-porcelain specimen. Second, The bonding strength of Group V1 was $32.37{\pm}1.91MPa$, $38.25{\pm}1.38MPa$ in Group V2, $46.43{\pm}2.14MPa$ in Group V3 and $47.21{\pm}1.72MPa$ Group V4. The difference has been statistically meaningful. Tukey's HSAD posteriori tests results have shown that the bonding strength in Group V4 was higher than that of Group V1. Third, the bonding strength between metal and porcelain without degassing process was higher than that of with degassing process, and the bonding strength of powder opaque was higher than that of paste opaque. Fourth, Group V4 has ranked the highest on the comparison table of metal and porcelain bonding strength.

  • To recycle the electric arc furnace (EAF) dust as a ceramic raw materials, the leaching concentrations of heavy metals (Zn, Pb, Cr, Cd) were analysed with various pH and mixing ratios for EAF dust and EAF dust-clay mixtures. The evaporation amounts of the some heavy metals were evaluated by measuring their total concentrations in the sintered bodies of EAF dust-clay mixtures with various mixing ratio and sintering temperature. Toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) test was conducted for evaluating the chemical stabilities of the heavy metal elements. Leaching concentrations of heavy metal ions shows minimum leaching concentration at the pH 10. Evaporation amount of heavy metals in the sintered bodies were evaluated for the mixtures of pH 10 depenidng on mixing ratio and sintering temperature. Evaporation of heavy metal components were increased with increasing the sintering temperature and contents of the EAF dust. The evaporation of the heavy metal components in EAF dust was effectively suppressed by increasing the clay content. The leaching concentrations of heavy metal components were decreased with increasing clay content and temperature.

  • This study was carried out to understand the properties of the E.A.F. steel-making dusts for stabilization processing. The properties are related to mincral composition, shape, particle size, magnetism, density, porosity and leaching characteristic. the dust particles, the size of which ranges from sub-micron to tens-micron, were mainly spherical like balls that were agglomerated each other: the large particles were generally Fe-rich and the small particles were spherical like balls that were agglomerated each other: the large particles were franklinite (ZnFe$_{2}O_{4}$), magnetite (Fe$_{3}O_{4}$) and zincite (ZnO) by XRD analysis. When the dusts were sieved by a wet process, the particle fraction over 200 mesh had 1.5 wt.% with magnetite and quartz. The particles in the size range of 200-500 mesh consisted of magnetite, franklinite. The 82 wt.% of the steel-making dusts were occupied by the particles finer than 500 mesh and contained franklinite and zincite as main mineralogical compositions. When the dusts of around 78% porosity compressed under the load of approximately 1 KPa, the porosity decreased to 68% and to 535 under around 13 KPa. When the E.A.F. dusts were leached according to the Korea standard leaching procedure on the waster, the heavy metals exceeding the leaching criteria were cadmium, lead and mercury.

  • Lithium-ion batteries have been considered the most important devices to power mobile or small-sized devices due to their high energy density. $LixCoO_2$ has been studied as a cathode material for the Li-ion battery. However, the limitation of its capacity impedes the development of high capacity cathode materials with Ni, Mn, etc. in them. The substitution of Mn and Ni for Co leads to the formation of solid solution phase $LiNi_xMn_yCo_{1-x-y}O_2$ (NMC, both x and y < 1), which shows better battery performance than unsubstituted $LiCoO_2$. However, despite a high discharge capacity in the Ni-rich compound (Ni > 0.8 in the metal site), poor cycle retention capability still remains to be overcome. In this study, aiming to improve the stability of the physical and chemical bonding, we investigate the stabilization effect of Ca in the Ni-rich layered compound $Li(Ni_{0.83}Co_{0.12}Mn_{0.05})O_2$, and then Ca is added to the modified secondary particles to lower the degree of cationic mixing of the final particles. For the optimization of the final grains added with Ca, the Ca content (x = 0, 2.5, 5.0, 10.0 at.%) versus Li is analyzed.

  • This review investigated theoretical principals and practical application examples on recirculation system of soil washing-wastewater treatment-treated water recycling. As for technologies which have attempted to remediating metals-contaminated soil in and around country, there are reactive barriers, encapsulation, solidification/stabilization, soil washing, and phytoremediation. Among those, in particular, this review covers soil washing technology which physicochemically removes contaminants from soils. The major drawbacks of this technology are to generate a large amount of wastewater which contains contaminants complexed with ligands of washing solution and needs additional treatment process. To solve these problems, many chemical treatment methods have been developed as follows: precipitation/coprecipitation, membrane filtration, adsorption treatment, ion exchange, and electrokinetic treatment. In the last part of the review, recent research and field application cases on soil washing wastewater treatment and recycling were introduced. Based on these integrated technologies, it could be achieved to solve the problem of soil washing wastewater and to enhance cost effective process by reducing total water resources use in soil washing process.

  • Slag cement and supersulfated slag cement were fabricated by mixing blast furnace slag and ordinary portland cement and adapted to solidify/stabilize heavy metal contained hazardous waste sludge. In case of slag cement, it showed continuous increase of their compressive strengths, which is attributed to the formation of the C-S-H, ettringite and monosulfate with STS sludge. However, BF and COREX sludge has a different shape and composition. therefore, adequate compressive strength could not be achieved with this slag cement. In case of the mixture of the each sludge like the STS-BF or the STS-COREX, the compressive strength over the standard level for disposing the wastes could be obtained with slag cement. The supersulfated slag cement that contain accelerators was very effective in solidifying the COREX sludge, which was difficult to solidify using different cement and obtained high compressive strength only for 3 days.

  • In order to investigate treatment effects of limestone and steel refining slag for paddy soils contaminated with arsenic and heavy metals, a lab-column test was carried out under reducing environments of flooded paddy soils. In conditions of the flooded paddy soils, at the point of time when iron and manganese were reduced and leached rapidly, heavy metals also leached rapidly, and some leachate samples from an untreated soil exceeded regulatory standards. On the contrary, all samples from soils treated with limestone 5% and steel refining slag 5% respectively were below the regulatory standards, showing much lower heavy metal concentrations than in the untreated soil. Arsenic increased continuously during the observation period according to its typical characteristics, and along with decreasing redox potential, arsenic was expected to leach as $H_3AsO_3$-of form $A^{3+}$ with high mobility and strong toxicity. Limestone and steel refining slag showed high treatment effects against heavy metals present in soil and steel refining slag especially showed the high treatment effects against arsenic.
