  • Due to the strength and biocompatibility requirement, the stainless steel SUS 316L is widely used for trauma internal fixation device. SUS 316L can be hardened and strengthened only by cold work. In this work, the material compression test is performed both in laboratory and computer simulation by a FEM analysis software DEFORM to correlate the hardness to strain. This data is then used for preform design and predict the hardness of the finish bone plate forging. Finally, we compared the hardness between the actual forging and computer analysis results. Although the predicted hardness from computer simulation. is 55HV higher than the final forging sample, we can get good compatibility on the hardening tendency of cold forging.

  • In today's highly competitive marketplace, it is of great significance for the manufacturing industry to reduce lead-time and costs fur the product development. Since first emerged in 1986, Rapid Prototyping (RP) technology has helped successfully to reduce time and costs. Recently, RP using functional materials such as metal has been researched. However RP using the molten metal has been struggling to resolve several drawbacks, such as dimensional inaccuracy, poor surface finish, post finishing, etc., that originate primarily from the overall deposition of molten metal for each layer. So, the purpose of this study is to develop a new RP technique using sheet metal and projection welding for reducing several drawbacks in occurring RP using molten metal. Also tensile and bending specimens were made by the developed RP process using projection welding and were verified.

  • A new dressing technique with utilizes electrolytic phenomenon for realizing effective mirror surface grindings with metal bonded super-abrasive wheels is called “Electrolytic In-process Dressing Grinding”. This technique enabled metal bonded micro-grain wheels, such as micro-grain cast iron fiber bonded wheels, to be used for mirror surface finish processes effectively. But this technique requires a lot of knowledge and experience to perform. And the condition of dressing is variable according to the time. Therefore adaptation of Monitoring and Control technique is needed.

  • Purpose: When the full veneer crown was treated in the tooth with abfraction lesion due to various causes, the prognosis of it may be compromised according to the location of the finish line, but there is few study about the location of its buccal finish line. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of location of the finish line of the full veneer crown on stress distribution of the tooth with abfraction lesion. Materials and methods: The two dimensional finite element model was developed to express tooth, surrounding tissue and full veneer crown. The stress distribution under eccentric 144 N occlusal load was analyzed using finite element analysis. The location of finish line was set just at the lower border of the lesion (Group 0), 1 mm (Group 1) and 2 mm (Group 2) below the lower border of the lesion. Results: In the Group 0, von Mises stress was concentrated at the finish line and the apex of the lesion. Also, the stress at the bucal finish line propagated to the lingual side. In the Group 1 and Group 2, stress distribution was similar each other. Stress was concentrated at the apex of lesion, but the stress at the buccal finish line did not propagate to the lingual side. That implied decrease of the possibility of horizontal crown fracture. Conclusion: Full veneer crown alleviated the stress concentrated at the apex of the abfraction lesion, when the finish line of full veneer crown was set below the lower border of abfraction lesion.

  • Built-up edge affects the surface integrity of the machined surface and tool wear. Tool geometry and cutting conditions are very important factors to remove BUE. In this paper, we optimized the geometry of the metal slitting saw .1nd cutting conditions to remove BUE by the experiment. In general, the metal slitting saw is plain milling cutter with thickness less of a 3/16 inch. This is used for cutting workpiece where high dimensional accuracy and surface finish are necessary. The experiment was planned with Taguchi method that is based on the orthogonal array of design factors(coating, rake angle, number of tooth, cutting speed, feed rate). Response table was made by the value of the surface roughness, the optimized tool geometry and cutting conditions through response table could be determined. In addition. the relative effect of factors were identified by the variance analysis. filially. coating and cutting speed turned out important factors.

  • It has been used various pad finish materials to enhance the reliability of solder joint and recently Electroless Ni Electroless Pd Immersion Gold (the following : ENEPIG) pad has been used more than others. This study is about reliability according to being used in commercial Electrolytic Ni pad and ENEPIG pad, and was observed behavior of various Cu contents. After reflow, the inter-metallic compound (IMC) between solder and pad is composed of $Cu_6Sn_5$ (Ni substituted) by using EDS, and in case of ENEPIG, between IMC and Ni layer was observed the dark layer ($Ni_3P$ layer). Additional, it could be controlled the thickness of dark layer according to Cu contents. Investigated the different fracture mode between electrolytic Ni and ENEPIG pad after drop shock test, in case of soft Ni, accelerated stress propagated along the interface between $1^{st}$ IMC and $2^{nd}$ IMC, and in case of ENEPIG pad, accelerated stress propagated along the weaken surface such as dark layer. The unstable interface exists through IMC, pad material and solder bulk by the lattice mismatch, so that the thermal and physical stress due to the continuous exterior impact is transferred to the IMC interface. Therefore, it is strongly requested to control solder morphology, IMC shape and thickness to improve the solder reliability.

  • Technological development are now encouraging new concepts in various fields of design, including material applications. Metal can be considered as the major material that represents modern design and technology since the industrial revolution. The objective of this study was to understand characteristics of metal as design material and various application methods in interior design. This study first examined basic qualities of metal and its history used in architectural design. Secondly, based on three qualities of metal such as physical, chemical, and mechanical the authors have analyzed projects built within recent 10 years regarding aspects of metal qualities, treatments. As results projects that uses a combination of two or more qualities and treatment seem to have a more interesting affects in interior space. Moreover, each affects are related to these four design keyword: visual distortion, de-materialization, hi-technology, and time-concept. The framework developed is hopes to be used as a basic design guideline, where metal is considered not just as a mere interior finish material but as a major creative source and inspiration in interior design.

  • SiCp-reinforced metal matrix composites (MMCs) containing 8 wt % and 16 wt % of $SiC_p-reinforced$ with 30 and $45\;{\mu}m$ in sizes were prepared by a melt stirring-squeeze casting technique. Microstructural observation showed that particle distributions were reasonably well. Turning experiments were carried out on the composites using uncoated and triple-layer coated carbide tools at various cutting speeds under a constant feed rate and depth of cut. Coated tools indicated better performance than uncoated tools for all the materials while the poor surface finish was obtained for coated tools.

  • Crevice corrosion of stainless steels in natural seawater was investigated for several post weld treatments; as-annealed, as-welded, pickled, and ground. The results confirmed the effect of the biofilm on the cathodic reaction leading to an ennoblement of the rest potential. The degree of ennoblement of corrosion potential depends on the surface finish. As-annealed and pickled samples show stable corrosion potential approaching to 200 ~ 300 mV (SCE) while as-welded and ground samples show the fluctuating corrosion potential. This points to a situation where there are conflicting effects determining the trend in free corrosion potential. Crevice corrosion initiation will tend to pull the free corrosion potential in the active direction, whereas the presence of biofilm will tend to ennoble corrosion potential. There was no visible attack on UNS S31803, S32550, and 2205W. Therefore, those stainless steel grades appeared to be resistant to crevice corrosion in natural seawater on condition of weld metal.
