  • In this study, an analysis on the reaction characteristics of a catalyst using platinum (Pt) as an active oxidation metal catalyst for controlling SO2 was performed. Pt/TiO2 catalyst was prepared by using Pt as various precursor forms on a titania (TiO2) support, and used for the experiment. There was no difference in performance of SO2 oxidation according to Pt valence states such as Pt2+ or Pt4+ on Pt/TiO2, and Pt chloride species such as PtClx reduces SO2 oxidation performance. In addition, as a result of analyzing the valence state of the catalyst before and after the SO2 oxidation reaction by XPS analysis, a decrease in lattice oxygen and an increase in surface chemisorbed oxygen after the SO2 oxidation reaction were confirmed. Therefore it can be suggested that the oxidation reaction of SO2 when using the Pt/TiO2 catalyst is the major one following the Mar-Van Krevelen mechanism where the reaction of lattice oxygen corresponding to PtOx and the oxidation-reduction reaction by oxygen vacancy occur. Overall, it can be confirmed that the oxygen species of PtOx (Pt2+ or Pt4+) present on the catalyst acts as a major active site.

  • The objective of this study is to convert methane into hydrogen using a nanoporous catalyst in the $CO_2$ containing syngas generated from the gasified waste. For the purpose, $Ni/Al_2O_3$ catalyst was prepared with the one-pot method. According to analyses of the catalyst, three dimensionally linked sponge shaped particles were created and the prepared nanoporous catalysts had larger surface area and smaller particle size and more uniform pores compared to the sphere shaped commercial catalyst. The catalyst for reforming reaction gave the highest $CH_4$ conversion of 91%, and $CO_2$ conversion of 92% when impregnated with 16 wt% of Ni at the reaction temperature of $750^{\circ}C$. At that time, the prepared catalyst remarkably improved the $CH_4$ and $CO_2$ conversion up to 20% compared to the commercial one.

  • The formation of diverse spiral waves was studied in a polyacrylamide gel membrane with ruthenium(4-vinyl-4'-methyl-2,2'-bipyridine)bis(2,2'-bipyridine)bis(hexafluorophosphate) by a gas-free Belousov-Zhabotinisky (BZ) reaction system containing 1,4-cyclohexanedione (1,4-CHD). The gel membrane was found to be receptive for observing propagating waves since a clearer wave-train is obtained during a long reaction time without any disturbance from the immobilized metal catalyst which can be dissolved into the highly acidic solution of the BZ system. The distinctive waves in the system basically depend on both $BrO_3$ and 1,4-CHD in the initial phase, and are influenced by the intensity of illumination of visible light.

  • This paper describes the fabrication and characteristics of NO sensor using ZnO thin film by RF magnetron sputter system. The sensitivity, working temperature, and response time of sputtered pure ZnO thin film and added catalysts such as Pt, Pd, Al, Ti on those films were measured and analyzed. The sensitivity of pure ZnO thin film at working temperature of $300^{\circ}C$ is 0.875 in NO gas concentration of 0.046 ppm. At same volume of the gas in chamber, measuring sensitivity of 1.87 at $250^{\circ}C$ was the case of Pt/ZnO thin film. The ZnO thin films added with catalyst materials were showed higher sensitivity, lower working temperature and faster adsorption characteristics to NO gas than pure ZnO thin film.

  • Transesterification reaction between dimethyl phthalate and ethylene glycol was kinetically investigated in the presense of various metal nitrate catalysts at $170^{\circ}C$. The reaction rates measured by the amount of distilled methanol from the reaction vessel. The transesterification reaction was carried out under the first order conditions respect to the concentration of dimethyl phthalate and catalyst, respectively. The over all order was 2nd. By Arrhenius plot, the activation energy was calculated as 17.4kcal/mole and 17.2kcal/mole on the transesterification reaction with zinc nitrate and lead nitrate, respectively. Apparent rate constant, k' was appeared linear about concentration of catalyst.

  • The study on synthesis of carbon nanomaterials by H2 mixing in counterflow methane diffusion flames has been experimentally conducted. We have also investigated on effect of catalyst and temperature in flame. The counterflow flame was formed by many kind of gas (fuel side using $CH_4-H_2-N_2$ and oxidizer side $N_2-O_2$) and nitrogen shields discharge on each other side to cut off oxidizer of the atmosphere. Ferrocene was used as a metal catalyst for CNTs synthesis. substrate was used to deposit carbon nanomaterials and these were analyzed by FE-SEM. We could find that carbon nanotubes and many kind of carbon nano materials were formed in Cu wire substrate, through this experiment.

  • Aligned carbon nanotubes(CNTs) array were synthesized using direct current plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition. The nickel microgrids catalyzed the growth of carbon nanotubes which take on the area of the nickel microgrids. Selective growth of areas of nanotubes was achieved by patterning the nickel film. CNTs were grown on the pretreated substrates at 30% $C_2H_2:NH_3$ flow ratios for 10min. Carbon nanotubes with diameters about 20 nanometers and lengths approximately 720 nanometers were obtained. Morphologies of carbon nanotubes were observed by FE-SEM and TEM.

  • Quick aging of catalysts has done with IAE(Institute for advanced engineering) AGING MODE suggested by IAE. To estimate the effects of number of aging cycle, temperature and $H_2O$, characteristics of surfaces, mechanical properties and weibull modulus were estimated. Also, the conversion efficiency of aged catalysts was evaluated with model gas bench test. The area of surface and pore volume were decreased according to the number of aging cycle. The precious metal which is well dispersed in fresh state was sintered and agglomerated with aging. The mechanical of deactivation and sintering of catalysts are discussed on the basis of mechanical tests. The conversion efficiency was decreased with the repeats of aging. Especially, the existence of $H_2O$ in supply gas had a main role in catalyst deactivation withy high temperature.

  • Carbon black, activated carbon and carbon nanotube have been used as supporting materials for precious metal catalysts used in fuel cell electrodes. One-step flame synthesis method is used to coat 2-5nm Pt dots on flame-generated carbon particles. By adjusting flame temperature, gas flow rates and resident time of particles in flame, we can obtain Pt/C nano catalyst-support composite particles. Additional injection of hydrogen gas facilitates pyrolysis of Pt precursor in flame. The size of as-incepted Pt dots increases along the flame due to longer resident time and sintering in high temperature flame. Surface coverage and dispersion of the Pt dots is varied at different sampling heights and confirmed by Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Energy-dispersive spectra (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Crystalinity and surface bonding groups of carbon are investigated through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy.

  • Rhodamine B (RhB) and rhodamine 6G (Rh6G) were employed as catalysts for the synthesis of cyclic carbonate from carbon dioxide and epoxide. It turned out that the catalytic activity of Rh6G was nearly 29 times higher than that of RhB at 1 atm pressure, $90^{\circ}C$. Furthermore, the catalytic efficiency of RhB and Rh6G was greatly enhanced with triethylamine as co-catalyst. Under the optimized conditions, the best isolated yield (93%) of cyclic carbonate was achieved without organic solvent and metal component.
