In this paper, the metal seal for a pressure vessel has been analyzed using the Daguchi method. This method may efficiently optimize the design parameters for a cantilever sealing device of a pressure vessel in terms of dimensions and angles. The computed results indicate that the optimized design parameters can only be drawn by sixteen experimental numbers of iterations when the Daguchi design technique has been employed. This means that the Daguchi design method is very useful for the optimization design of the curved design of the structure. Based on the computed results by the Daguchi design technique, the dimension and angle of the metal seal structure are given as $d_1=50mm,\;d_2=60mm,\;a_1=20^{\circ},\;a_2=8^{\circ},\;a_3=5^{\circ}$.
In this paper, experimental and numerical study on a combined sheet metal forming and plate forging of a seal part of a passenger car's hub bearing is conducted to develop the new process of which target is to remove machining process by plate forging and to achieve near-net shape manufacturing. The previous process of a sheet metal forming inevitably needed a machining process for making stepped sheet after conventional sheet metal forming in a progressive way. The stepped sheet is intended to be formed by plate forging in this study. Through the systematic way of developing the combined forming process using solid elements based-elastoplastic finite element method (FEM), several conceptual designs are made and an optimized process design in terms of geometric dimensioning and tolerance of straightness of the thin part is found, which is exposed to bending in metal forming of axisymmetric part. The predicted straightness measured by the slope angle of the tilted thin region is compared with the experimental straightness, showing that they are in a good agreement with each other. Through this study, a systematic approach to optimal process design, based on elastoplastic FEM with solid elements, is established, which will contribute to innovating the conventional small-scaled sheet metal forming processes which can be dealt with by solid elements.
A face seal comprising a metal ring and acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) was installed in the driving part and suspension unit. The seal serves as a bearing and simultaneously prevents entry of foreign matter from external environment as well as internal oil leakage. Subsequently, the rubber-rod ring generates axial pressure owing to rubber elasticity (hardness), performs static sealing function between housing details and outer diameter of seal, and transmits rotational torque to the rotating support ring. In order to improve the durability of NBR, which performs the above tasks, and to effectively use it in tracked-vehicle applications at extreme temperatures, this study reports a mixing design approach to enhance cold and oil resistances of NBR.
The rubber seal is a part inserted into servo cylinder to keep the air pressure constant. In order for efficient movements of the servo cylinder, the frictional coefficient of the rubber seal needs to be minimized while the sealing is maintained. In this work the friction characteristics of rubber seal specimen are tested on metal plate at various conditions. The experimental conditions include roughness level, applied pressure, lubrication, and rubbing speed. The design of experiment approach is taken to assess the effect of each parameter. The nonlinear frictional response of the rubber is applied to the FEM model simulating the servo cylinder movement. The result demonstrates that precise optimization of the servo cylinder movement must be preceded by preliminary experiments coupled with the theory and FEM model.
We performed thermal and structural analyses to evaluate the structural integrity of a semi-metal gasket for a flange with increases in the internal fluid temperature and pressure using a commercial FEA program. As a thermal analysis result, the temperature distribution of the gasket body increased with an increase in the internal fluid temperature until the maximum fluid temperature of $600^{\circ}C$. In addition, the structural analysis showed that contact pressures of more than 35 MPa occurred uniformly in the graphite seal regions. It was found that no fluid leakage occurred under the load conditions for the structural analysis because the contact pressure in the graphite seal region was greater than the maximum internal fluid pressure of 35 MPa. Therefore, we demonstrated the structural integrity of the semi-metal gasket by performing the thermal and structure analyses under the maximum fluid temperature of $600^{\circ}C$ and the internal fluid pressure of 35 MPa.
In order to thoroughly verify the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, it is urgent to develop technology capabilities to monitor, detect, collect, analyze, interpret, and evaluate nuclear activities using nuclear materials and secure nuclear transparency. The IAEA is actively using seal technology to maximize the efficiency of safety measures, and currently uses metal cap, paper, COBRA, and EOSS as seal devices. Unlike facilities that comply with safety measures requirements, such as domestic nuclear facilities, facilities subject to denuclearization are likely to have various risk environments that make it difficult to apply safety measures, and there is a high possibility that continuity of knowledge (COK) such as damage, malfunction, and power loss will not be maintained. This study aims to develop a real-time active seal device that can be applied in such special situations to enable immediate response in the event of a similar situation. To this end, the main functions of the real-time seal device were derived and applied, and a commercialized seal device and operation software. The real-time seal technology developed through this study can be applied to all nuclear facilities in South Korea, especially used as storage equipment for dry cask storage facilities of heavy water reactor's after fuel, and it is believed that unnecessary radiation exposure by inspectors can be minimized.

This work was carried out to obtain sound welds and to select a most suitable binary metal joint among three different dissimilar binary metal combinations such as Zr-4/Ta, Mo/Ta and Ti/Ta(seal tube/sensor sheath) joints fur the instrumented nuclear fuel irradiation test. To do this, Taguchi experimental method was employed to optimize the experimental data. In addition, metallography, micro-focus x-ray radiography and hardness test were conducted to examine the welds. From the weld bead appearance, penetration depth and bead width as well as weld defects standpoint, Zr-4/Ta joint is suggested for the circumferential joining between a seal tube and a sensor sheath. The optimized welding parameters based on Zr-4/Ta joint are suggested as well.

The friction coefficients of the rubber for clutch master cylinder were experimentally measured in this study. The cylindrical rubber samples for primary cup-seal and secondary cup-seal were tested against the aluminum or the steel plates of master cylinder housing under the various conditions of brake oil temperatures and normal loads. Dry sliding friction coefficients were also measured under various load conditions. The test revealed following results. First, the friction coefficient under fluid lubrication condition in general decreases, as the oil temperature or normal load increases. Second, the steel plate of low surface roughness yielded comparatively low friction coefficient on the range of 0.30∼0.67. On the other hand, the aluminum plate of high surface roughness yielded high friction coefficient on the range of 0.31∼1.15. Third, the friction coefficient of dry surface contact decreases as the normal load increases. This is contrary to the general principle of friction coefficient between metal plates.
Many research efforts on the effect of nitrogen on the corrosion resistance of stainless steels have been reported, but little research has been conducted on the effect of nitrogen for the weldment of stainless steels by the seal-weld method. Therefore, this work focused on the determining the corrosion resistance of tube/tube sheet mock-up specimen for sea water condensers, and elucidating the effect of shielding nitrogen gas on its resistance. The pitting corrosion of autogenously welded specimen propagated preferentially along the dendritic structure. Regardless of the percent of shielding nitrogen gas, the analyzed nitrogen contents were very much lower than that of the bulk specimen. This can be arisen because the nitrogen in shielding gas may partly dissolve into the weldment, but simultaneously during the welding process, nitrogen in the alloy may escape into the atmosphere. However, the pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN) of the interdendrite area was higher than that of the dendrite arm, regardless of the shielding gas percent; and the PREN of the interdendrite area was higher than that of the base metal; the PREN of the dendrite arm was lower than that of the base metal because of the formation of (Cr, Mo) rich phases by welding.

Pressure resistance welding is usually used to seal the connection between the cladding tube and the end plug made of zirconium alloy. The seal welded joint has a direct effect on the service performance of the fuel rod cladding structure. In this paper, the pressure resistance welded joints of zirconium alloy tube-plug structure were obtained by thermal-mechanical simulation experiments. The microstructure and microhardness of the joints were both analyzed. The effect of processing parameters on the microstructure was studied in detail. The results showed that there was no β-Zr phase observed in the joint, and no obvious element segregation. There were different types of Widmanstätten structure in the thermo-mechanically affected zone (TMAZ) and heat affected zone (HAZ) of the cladding tube and the end plug joint because of the low cooling rate. Some part of the grains in the joint grew up due to overheating. Its size was about 2.8 times that of the base metal grains. Due to the high dislocation density and texture evolution, the microhardnesses of TMAZ and HAZ were both significantly higher than that of the base metal, and the microhardness of the TMAZ was the highest. With the increasing of welding temperature, the proportion of recrystallization in TMAZ decreased, which was caused by the increasing of strain rate and dislocation annihilation.
