  • Metal ions, toxic or potentially toxic to biota and human beings, can be immobilized by sorption onto the mineral surfaces in soils and sediments. This article briefly explains theories regarding the chemical properties of mineral surfaces to sorb metal ions and processes of extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analysis for sorption study, and reviews atomic-scale findings on metal sorption on mineral surfaces. The theoretical understanding on the chemistry of mineral surfaces and metal sorption is fundamental to the proper analysis of the atomic-scale spectroscopy to determine the sorption phases. Atomic-scale findings on metal sorption phases discussed here include co-precipitation, ternary complexation, aging effects, and desorption possibilities, as well as outer-sphere complexation, inner-sphere complexation, and surface precipitation.

  • The recent rapid economic growth of China has an increasing interest to Korea. China is plentiful of the natural mineral resources and has a huge territory with 1.3 billion people, also has a strong foundation in the mining industry as a mineral process and metallurgical technology. Such strong mining industry of China is attractive to Korea which is getting ready the North East Asia epoch. The growth of big mining groups as Gangseo (Jiangxi) Copper Corporation and Honam Juyawhageo (Hunan Zhuye Torch) Metal Co. Ltd. haul up the rapid economic growth in China.

  • With industrial development, the inevitable increase in both organic and inorganic waste necessitates the exploration of waste treatment and utilization methods. This study focuses on co-pyrolyzing lignin and red mud to generate metalbiochar, aiming to demonstrate their potential as effective adsorbents for water pollutant removal. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed mass loss of lignin below 660℃, with additional mass loss occurring (>660℃) due to the phase change of metals (i.e., Fe) in red mud. Characterization of the metal-biochar indicated porous structure embedded with zero-valent iron/magnetite and specific functional groups. The adsorption experiments with 2,4-dichlorophenol and Cd(II) revealed the removal efficiency of the two pollutants reached its maximum at the initial pH of 2.8. These findings suggest that copyrolysis of lignin and red mud can transform waste into valuable materials, serving as effective adsorbents for diverse water pollutants.

  • Aluminum based metal-organic framework using a di-carboxylate linker succinic acid (Al-SA MOF), are synthesized in water with minimal generation of secondary pollutants. The physicochemical properties of Al-SA MOF were examined, followed by its utility for the adsorption of Acid Black 1 (AB1) in aqueous media. Influences of key parameters such as pH, contact time, initial AB1 concentration, temperature, and selectivity on the adsorption process were assessed. A series of adsorption mechanisms are proposed, which involve electrostatic, hydrogen bonding, and hydrophobic interactions. These findings suggest that Al-SA MOF is a potent candidate in removing complex azo dyes molecules from aqueous media.

  • In general, plant roots accumulate more heavy metals than the above ground organs such as leaf, stem, and fruit. This implies that root medicinal plants would be an issue with excessive heavy metal accumulation. Therefore, the current study was carried out to investigate the distribution of heavy metal (focused on Cd and Pb) concentrations in soils and medicinal plant roots grown in different region of Korea. Total 293 samples for each soil and plant were collected along the national wide. Soil pH, total and phytoavailable metal concentrations (1 M $NH_4NO_3$ extracted) in soils were determined and heavy metal concentrations in root of the medicinal plants were analyzed. Heavy metal concentrations of the soil samples studied were not exceeded standard limits legislated in 'Soil Environmental Conservation Act', except 2 samples for Cu. However, substantial amount of Cd was accumulated in medicinal plant roots with 29% samples exceeding the standard limit legislated in 'Pharmaceutical Affairs Act' while all plant samples were lower than the standard limit value for Pb. Also the current study demonstrated that cadmium concentrations in the roots were governed by the phytoavailable Cd in soils, which decreased as soil pH increased. From this result, application of heavy metal immobilization technique using a pH change-induced immobilizing agents can be suggested for safer root medicinal plant production.

  • It is well known that hydroxyapatite [$Ca_{10}(PO_4)_6(OH)_2$] have an exchangeability for various heavy metal ions in aqueous solution. To evalute the feasibility of employing the synthetic hydroxyapatites as an eliminatable exchanger for environmentally noxious caions in waste water, the adsorption properties, the removal capacities and the selectivity of the apatites for various cations were investigated in more detailed. The heavy metal cations have been exchanged in calcium part of hydroxyapatite. The order of the degree of amount exchanged of the investigated cations is $Pb^{2+}>Cd^{2+}>Zn^{2+}>Ba^{2+}$. The molar ratios between released $Cd^{2+}$ ions and remeved divalent metal cations in the reacted solution with hydroxyapatite are roughly close to an integer 1.0, suggesting that an ion-exchange reaction could have played a major role in the removal of heavy metals rather then an adsorption effect. The exchangeability of the hydroxyapatite powder of Ca/P molar ratio 1.67, which have specipic surface area of $104.5m^2g^{-1}$, appeared to be better then $237.6{\mu}g$ per g for $Pb^{2+}$ ions. The removal capacity of the heavy metal ions varies directly as particle size of hydroxyapatites. All evidences obtained indicate that the synthesized hydroxyapatite powders by precipitation reaction method can be employed as an effective cation exchanger for eliminating noxious ions in waste water even in some improvemental.

  • In order to prevent the belt from being damaged by metal pieces, we developed multicoil-type metal detection system. This detects the presence of belt clips and position of metal pieces in ores being transported on conveyor belt. In this research, our coil sensor of multicoil-type metal detection system is divided into two parts, exciting part (transmitter coil) and sensing part composed of two receiver coils. Each receiver coil has several coils in the direction of belt width. Multicoil-type metal detection system is operated by supplying a transmitter coil with electric power resources to generate magnetic field, and then the change of magnetic flux resulted from a metal piece on the conveyor be a is induced into sensing coils. We can prevent detector from failing to catch metal pieces due to high threshold level produced by steel belt clips and male the sensitivity of belt-width direction uniform by using multicoil-type metal detection system. Besides, this developed system can recognize precise position and size of metal piece. The experiments shows that our multicoil-type metal detection system has better performances than the conventional metal piece detector.
