  • In this research, we developed a process design hot-forging technology that precisely forms an inner race. The inner race transmits power to a one-way clutch of an automatic transmission and minimizes the CNC machining allowance. For a multi-stage hollow shape (inner race), we proposed several shapes of blocker and finisher for the precision hot-forging process and analyzed the forging process using DEFORM. The hot-forging process was optimized for several parameters, such as metal flow pattern, forging defect, and forming load. Blockers and finisher dies in the hot-forging process were designed to select optimal shapes from finite element analysis, and experiments were conducted to optimize the hot-forging process.

  • Shielding gas has significant effects on arc stability, metal transfer and weld quality in the gas metal arc welding (GMAW) process. The double gas-shielded MAG(DMAG) and auxiliary gas-shielded MAG (AMAG) torches are investigated for their capability to provide argon-rich gas mixture using small amount of argon gas through the inner and auxiliary nozzles, respectively. Argon composition with the DMAG torch is calculated numerically, and compared with the measured data using the gas chromatogrphy. Gas flow pattern of the DMAG torch is calculated to change from the laminar to turbulent flow when total gas flow rate becomes larger than 4.5 liter/min at room temperature. While argon-rich shielding gas was obtained using both the AMAG and DMAG torches, the AMAG torch provides higher argon composition than the DMAG torch, which demonstrates that argon gas can be utilized more efficiently with the AMAG torch.

  • We propose a custom analysis technique for the dark field (DF) image based on transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The custom analysis technique is developed based on the $DigitalMicrograph^{(R)}$ (DM) script language embedded in the Gatan digital microscopy software, which is used as the operational software for most TEM instruments. The developed software automatically scans an electron beam across a TEM sample and records a series of electron diffraction patterns. The recorded electron diffraction patterns provide DF and ADF images based on digital image processing. An experimental electron diffraction pattern is recorded from a IrMn polycrystal consisting of fine nanograins in order to test the proposed software. We demonstrate that the developed image processing technique well resolves nanograins of ~ 5 nm in diameter.

  • A series of metal ion-2, 5-diamine 1, 4-dihydroxybenzene polymers containing copper(II), nickel(II) or cobalt (II) have been prepared. The structure was postulated on the basis of elementary analysis of polymers. It was found that copper polymer is most likely the coordination polymers by X-ray powder pattern studies. The thermal stability of the polymers was also studied by a simple method, utilizing a thermogravimetric balance. The order of thermal stabilities is Cu(II) > Ni(II) > Co(II). The polymers start to decompose at a relatively low temperature.

  • A numerical study was performed on the fluid flow in the melt of the cold model for Czochralski growth system. The fluid flow in the melt of Woods metal with crucible diameter of 20cm was calculated using a three dimensional finite difference method. Since the crucible size is large, fully turbulent model as well as laminar model was used in the calculation. The effects of crucible rotation rate, crystal rotation rate and wall temperature difference on the velocity and temperature distribution were also investigated. For the purpose of verifying the results of calculation, a cold model experiment using Woods metal was also conducted and the velocity distribution in the melt of the model was measured.

  • This research describes a new constructing method of multifunctional biosensor using many kinds of biomaterials. A metal particle and an array was fabricated by photolithographic. Biomaterials were immobilized on the metal particle. The array and the particles were mixed in a buffer solution, and were arranged by magnetic force interaction and self-assembly. A quarter of total Ni dots were covered by the particles. The binding direction of the particles was controllable, and condition of particles was almost with Au surface on top. The particles were successfully arranged on the array. The biomaterial activities were detected by chemiluminescence and electrochemical methods.

  • Sandwich structures, which are composed of a thick core between two thin faces, are commonly used in many engineering applications because they combine high stiffness and strength with low weight. Depending on the application of a particular sandwich structure, various types of cores can be used. The production of sandwich sheets by a rolling process, which is a more efficient and economical approach compared to other types of processes, has become an increasingly important subject of study. In this paper, we have studied the embossing structure of sheet type and developed embossing roll mold with $\Phi3$ pattern and roll forming system.

  • Even though the initial mass function (IMF) of the first generation of stars played important roles in reionization of the universe, subsequent star formation, and chemical enrichment of the universe, it is still very uncertain. In this study, among the several indirect ways of estimating the IMF of the population III (Pop III) stars, we make use of extremely metal-poor (EMP; [Fe/H] < -3.0) stars in the Milky Way, in order to infer the characteristic mass range of Pop III stars. As the progenitors of many of the EMP stars are known to be Pop III stars, we attempt to construct the characteristic mass range of the progenitors (e.g., Pop III stars) of the EMP stares by comparing their observed abundance pattern of various chemical elements with chemical yields from supernova models.

  • This work is concerned with the development of a new plaster die casting process the combines pressurization and vibration for the prototyping of die-castings, and also with a plaster die-casting machine that has a structure quite similar to that of an ordinary die casting machine. The machine utilized an air cylinder for pressurization and a magnetic actuator for vibration. A rapid prototyped pattern is made by the LOM process to prepare a plaster mold. In the process, a plunger int he developed machine simultaneously pressurizes and vibrates the molten metal to fill the plaster mold completely and to facilitate the creation of nuclei in the molten metal, respectively. The developed machine produced a prototype of an end clutch cover with a remarkable improvement in mechanical properties.

  • The design methods using patterns have been used in various design fields. Both utility and results have also developed a lot, so that patterns occupy an essential parts in designs. Patterns are often used in various techniques in designing ornaments. However, both time and excessive effort concentrations restricted ornaments designs due to the nature of the craft production techniques by repeated patterns. Therefore, in this study, the traditional craft methods are combined by using computer programs in the applications, repetitions, arrangements of patterns for the manufacturing of ornaments.
