Surface hardening of AC4C aluminium alloy with TiC powders was obtained by plasma transferred are (PTA) method, Bead appearance, microstrucutre and wear behavior were characterized in relation to the torch current, powder feed rate and wear condition. The width and the depth of bead were mainly increased with increasing torch current. The comparison of wear behavior between AC4C alloy and PTA treated AC4C alloy showed the remarkable enhancement of wear resistance.
In order to estimate the wettability of the borosilicate glasses with different composition on the noble metals of gold and silver, the measurements of the contact angle between the solid and the liquid were made at various temperatures and holding times using the sessil-drop method. The wetting behavior and the adhesion of the phases were strongly influenced by the thermal or the physical characteristics of the materials. The dependence of wetting angle ($\theta$) on the holding time (t) could be represented by the relation of $\theta$=a.tb, whereby the wettability of the systems was quantitatively compared. Also with increasing content of borosilicate glass in the glass-gold matrix composite, the tensile strength was decreased whereas the elastic modulus was increased.

Nanostructured materials exhibit attractive mechanical properties that are often superior to the performance of their coarse-grained counterparts. However, one major drawback is their low ductility, which limits their potential applications. In this paper, different strategies to obtain both high strength and enhanced ductility in nanostructured materials are reported for Ti-base and Zr-base alloys. The first approach consists of designing an in-situ composite microstructure containing ductile bcc or hop dendrites that are homogeneously dispersed in a nanostructured matrix. The second approach is related to refining the eutectic structure of a Ti-Fe-Sn alloy. For all these materials, the microstructure, mechanical properties, deformation and fracture mechanisms will be discussed.
Along with the growth of conventional ferrous powder metallurgy (PM), PM of aluminum alloys has been intensively investigated in Japan. Although rapidly solidified aluminum alloy powder was first used in the USA,/sup 1)/ commercialization for consumer market was first realized in Japan./sup 2)/ In order to achieve the viable cost-performance including Near Net Shape (NNS) formability, we developed three processes, powder extrusion, powder forging and sintering. The new powder extrusion process does not use either capsulation or vacuum degassing. The new powder forging does not need lateral flow. The new sintering process does not use liquid phase. The performance achieved by the processes is outstanding mechanical or physical properties that has potential to substitute cast iron, steel, titanium Metal Matrix Composite (MMC) or Ingot Metallurgy (IM) aluminum alloys. Cooperation with customers, powder suppliers and research associations contributed to the advancement of PM aluminum alloys in Japan.
This study deals with characterizations of microstructure and wear performance of a cladding layer, product on 1.9 mm-thick mild steel plate by the electric resistance welding, of composite metal powder of Coarse WC-6.5%Co and high carbon alloy(SHA). The cladding layer was examined and tested fur microstructural features, chemical composition, hardness, wear performance and wear mechanism. The cladding layer have two different matrix were observed by an optical microscope and EPMA. The one was the coarse WC-6.5Co structure. The other was the melted SHA with surrounding the WC-6.5Co structure. The hardness of WC-6.5Co was 1210HV. The hardness of SHA was 640HV. In comparison by wear rate, the cladding layer showed the remarkable wear performance that was 15 times of SM490 and about 62% of D2.
Hydroxyapatite (HAp)-zirconia bioceramics, which have excellent biocompatibility with tissue of bone and tooth and good mechanical properties, were synthesized, and their properties and biocompatibility were investigated. HAp powders were synthesized with Ca/P=1.67 and pH 11 by precipitation method. A fine spherical monodispersed ZrO2 powders were prepared by metal alkoxide method, and then they were partially stabilized with 10 mol% CaO by solid state reaction at 1300℃. HAp-zirconia composites were prepared by sintering of these HAp mixed with various amount CaO-partially stabillized zirconia (PSZ). When HAp containing 15 wt% PSZ with 10 mol% CaO (PSZ(10C)) were sintered at 1250℃, it was prevented to decompose into TCP and ZrO2 was uniformly dispersed at HAp matrix. Mechanical strength of these sintered bodies were increased by addition of 15 wt% PSZ(10C), the bending strength of compacts fired at 1250℃ was 165 MPa. HAp-PSZ composites chemically bonded each other in Ringer's solution and the component of bonded layer was HAp. These composites did not prevent cell-growing and exhibit any cytotoxic effects.
The objective of this study is to investigate fatigue life and fatigue crack propagation behavior The experiment of fatigue life for MMC have been carried out for the stress ratio R=0.1 at 20Hz. Fatigue lift limit of AC4CH alloy is about 70 ㎫ and Fatigue limit of MMC has been increment to 120 ㎫, therefore, fatigue limits of MMC is about 71 % higher than that of AC4CH alloy Crack propagation tests on half-size CT specimen of thickness 12.5mm were conducted by using sinusoidal waveform. The crack length was monitored by compliance method. Test conditions were at 0.1 and 0.05 of load ratio at 10Hz of loading frequency and test load was 2.3kN. The effects of stress ratio on the fatigue crack propagation behavior for MMC was discussed within the Paris law. As the results of this study, Fatigue crack propagation increased with increasing the load ratio.

Mechanical properties of 7xxx series Al metal matrix composite (MMC) powders containing different amounts of ceramic were investigated. The ceramic contents of the starting powders were 5 wt.% or 10 wt.%. The powders were uniaxially cold compacted using a cylindrical die with a compacting pressure of 250 MPa and were sintered at $620^{\circ}C$ in a dry $N_2$ atmosphere for 60 min. For the heat treatment, sintered parts were solution treated at $475^{\circ}C$ and aged at $175^{\circ}C$. Compression tests were conducted to reveal the effect of $Al_2O_3$ particle content on the mechanical properties of the composites. Fractography was examined using a scanning electron microscope.
