  • In various small modular reactor (SMR) designs currently under development, the conventional concrete containment building has been replaced by a metal containment vessel (MCV). In these systems, the gap between the MCV and the reactor pressure vessel is filled with gas or vacuumed weakly, effectively suppressing conduction and convection heat transfer. However, thermal radiation remains the major mode of heat transfer during normal operation. The objective of this study was to investigate the heat-transfer mechanisms in integral pressurized water reactor (IPWR)-type SMRs under various gas-filled conditions using computational fluid dynamics. The use of thermal radiation shielding (TRS) with a much lower emissivity material than the MCV surface was also evaluated. The results showed that thermal radiation was always the dominant contributor to heat loss (48-97%), while the conjugated effects of the gas candidates on natural convection and thermal radiation varied depending on their thermal and radiative properties, including absorption coefficient. The TRS showed an excellent insulation performance, with a reduction in the total heat loss of 56-70% under the relatively low temperatures of the IPWR system, except for carbon dioxide (13%). Consequently, TRS can be utilized to enhance the thermal efficiency of SMR designs by suppressing the heat loss through the MCV.

  • The development of hydrogen vehicles has been actively progressed in the developed countries such as U. S., Japan and Germany. The most important technology of using hydrogen fuel is to develope a compatible storage tank with respect to the fossil fuel tank. Among many storage methods, the liquid hydrogen is the most desirable state because of the lowest volume and weight. The metal hydride tank is too heavy and the compressed hydrogen tank is too bulky. Because of these reasons, it is the principal purpose to analyze the theoretical heat transfer for designing and manufacturing an actual $LH_2$ tank. The insulation methods of the room between inner and outer vessel are non-vacuum, vacuum, vacuum with MLI(Multi-Layer Insulation). According to the results of the numerically calculated heat leak through the walls of the $LH_2$ tank, the vacuum insulated tank has 20 times and the MLI tank has 5616 times less heat leak than the non-vacuum tank.

  • We fabricated a MISFET using Pd/NiCr gate for the detecting of hydrogen gas in the air and investigated its electrical characteristics. To improve stability and high concenntration sensitivity and remove the blister generated by the penetration of hydrogen atoms Pd/NiCr catalyst gate metal are used as dual gate. To reduce the gate drift voltage caused by the inflow of hydrogen, the gate insulators of sensing and reference FFET were constructed with double insulation layers of silicon dioxide and silicon nitride. The hydrogen response of MISFET were amplified with the difference of gate voltages of both MISFET. To minimize the drift and the noise, we used a OP177 operational amplifier. The sensitivity of the Pd/NiCr gate MISFET was lower than that of Pd/Pt gate MISFET, but it showed good stability and ability to detect high concentration hydrogen up to 1000ppm.

  • Conventional direct current (DC) rotating machines are usually used for crane and press machine using high torque in metal and steel industries, because of a constant output power along variable rotating speed. A general DC motor with permanent field magnets could not increase a magnetic flux density at a gap between armature coils and field magnets. However, a superconducting DC motor has field magnets composed with high temperature superconducting (HTS) coils and it could increase the magnetic flux density at the gap to over 10 times than those of a general DC motor by control the excitation current into HTS coils. The superconducting DC motor could be operated with extremely high torque and constant output power at a low rotational speed. In this paper, a 500 W superconducting DC rotating machine was conceptually designed with a LN2 (Liquid Nitrogen) cooling method and the operation characteristics results of HTS field magnets were presented. The two no-insulation HTS magnets for a 500 W superconducting DC rotating machine were fabricated. The excitation current for the HTS magnets could be controlled from 0 to 40 A. This test results will be available to design large-sized HTS magnets for a number of hundred kW class superconducting DC rotating machine under LN2 cooling system.

  • As the demand for electric vehicles increases, the stability of batteries has become one of the most significant issues. The battery housing, which protects the battery from external stimuli such as vibration, shock, and heat, is the crucial element in resolving safety problems. Conventional metal battery housings are being converted into polymer composites due to their lightweight and improved corrosion resistance to moisture. The transition to polymer composites requires high mechanical strength, electrical insulation, and thermal stability. In this paper, we proposes a high-strength nanocomposite made by infiltrating epoxy into a 3D aligned h-BN structure. The developed 3D aligned h-BN/epoxy composite not only exhibits a high compressive strength (108 MPa) but also demonstrates excellent electrical insulation and thermal stability, with a stable electrical resistivity at 200 ℃ and a low thermal expansion coefficient (11.46×ppm/℃), respectively.

  • It is common practice to identify the insulation faults of GIS through monitor the contents of SF6 decomposed components. Partial discharges (PD) could lead to the decomposition of SF6 dielectric, so new reactions usually occur in the mixture of the newly decomposed components including traces of H2O and O2. The new reactions also cause the decomposed components to differ due to the different amounts of H2O and O2 even under the same strength of PD. Thus, the accuracy of assessing the insulation faults is definitely influenced when using the concentration and corresponding change of decomposed components. In the present research, a needle-plate electrode was employed to simulate the PD event of a metal protrusion insulation fault for two main characteristic components SO2F2 and SOF2, and to carry out influence analysis of trace H2O and O2 on the characteristic components. The research shows that trace H2O has the capability of catching an F atom, which inhibits low-sulfide SFx from recombining into high-sulfide SF6. Thus, the amount of SOF2 strongly correlates to the amount of trace H2O, whereas the amount of SO2F2 is weakly related to trace H2O. Furthermore, the dilution effect of trace O2 on SOF2 obviously exceeds that of SO2F2.

  • The purpose of this study is to improve the whitening phenomenon around the PET preform gate for blow molding. CAE analysis of plastic injection molding has been applied to design of preform shape and select the injection molding conditions. A ceramic insulation gate with lower thermal conductivity than metal is applied to improve the whitening phenomenon created around the gate in the injection molding process. According to the results of CAE analysis, the warpage deformation at the square corner was estimated to be about 0.34 mm at the bottom. From the results of the temperature history analysis, it was confirmed that the resin near the gate cooled more rapidly than the cavity. Ceramic insulated gates were fabricated to reduce the cooling rate and experiments were conducted to confirm the effectiveness of the whitening phenomenon improvement. As a result of the ceramic insulation gate experiment, it was confirmed that the whitening phenomenon was significantly reduced around the gate.

  • Objectives: This study focused on three aspects: characterizing concentrations of airborne particles by size distributions and asbestos fibers generated by various building materials; analyzing the characteristics of fibers produced by each simulation and asbestos fibers released from ACBMs; and investigating correlations of airborne asbestos fibers and particles generated and association of particle and asbestos concentrations. Methods: We selected three ACBMs including an insulation board, cement asbestos slate and wallboard. We constructed 4 scenarios; a) crushing with a hammer; b) cutting with a industrial knife; c) brushing with a metal brush; and d) tightening & loosening with a hand drill. We implemented one simulation for 30 seconds followed by 30 seconds resting period. We repeated a total of 5 cycles for 5 minutes. Results: The highest concentration of particulate & fibrous matters was from crushing with a hammer in each scenario followed by brushing with a metal brush, cutting with a industrial knife, and tightening & loosening with a hand drill. For ACBMs studied, asbestos concentrations were highest from an insulation board followed by cement asbestos slate, and wallboard. No difference in terms of concentration was found between an insulation board and asbestos slate. Fibers with $5{\sim}20{\mu}m$ in length were included in 76~90% of total fibrous matters. The distribution of the straight form fibers was greater than that of the curl form. About 90% of $PM_{Total}$ released from ACBMs was consisted of $PM_{10}$ while only 10% of $PM_{Total}$ was $PM_{2.5}$. Particulate matters like $PM_{2.5}$ was significantly correlated with fibrous matters($R^2=0.81$). Conclusions: We found ACBMs can significantly release asbestos fibers as well as $PM_{2.5}$. Concentrations of asbestos generated by ACBMs were well correlated with $PM_{2.5}$.

  • The Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) technique has attracted considerable interest in the fabrication of electrical and electronic devices. Maxwell displacement current (MDC) measurement has been employed to study the dielectric property of Langmuir-films. MDC flowing across monolayers is analyzed using a rod-like molecular model. A linear relationship between the monolayer compression speed u and the molecular area Am. Compression speed a was about 30, 40, 50mm/min. Langmuir-Blodgett(LB)layers of Arachidic acid deposited by LB method were deposited onto slide glass as Y-type film. The structure of manufactured device is Au/Arachidic acid/Al, the number of accumulated layers are 9$\sim$21. Also, we then examined of the Metal-Insulator-Metal(MIM) device by means of I-V. The I-V characteristics of the device are measured from -3 to +3[V]. The insulation property of a thin film is better as the distance between electrodes is larger.

  • This paper describes the development of needle type probe that measures temperature and injects medicine for both diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal pain syndrome (MPS). The size of trigger points is from several micrometers to millimeter. Therefore, it is required to develop a medical device that is capable of not only finding the trigger points by temperature measurement, but also injecting medicine at the exact location for treatment. To challenge these difficulties, thermocouple was fabricated on the surface of a needle using metal deposition process. Special type of stainless-constantan thermocouple was achieved from the stainless body of a needle itself and deposited constantan metal film. In particular, parylene coating enables to limit the temperature sensitive area to the end of the needle tip. Fabricated needle type probe produces $3.25mV/^{\circ}C$ of thermoelectric sensitivity and compared its performance with commercial T-type thermocouple in animal muscle sample.
