Thermally or electrically conductive filler reinforced polymer composites are extensively being developed as the demand for light weight material increases rapidly in industiral applications need good conductivity such as heat sink of the electronics or light. Carbon or ceramic materials like graphite, carbon nanotube or boron nitride are typical conductive fillers with good thermal or electical conductivity. Using these conductive fillers, the polymer composites in the market show wide range of thermal conductivity from approximately 1 W/mK to 20 W/mK, which is quite enhanced considering the thermal conductivity lower than 0.5 W/mK for most polymeric materials. The practical use of these composites, however, is yet limited to specific applications because most composites are still not conductive enough or too difficult to process, too brittle, too expensive for higher conductivity. For practical use of conductive composite, the thermal conductivity required depending on the heat releasing mode are studied first for simplified unit cooling geometry to propose thermal conductivities of the composites for reasonable cooling performance comparing with the metal heat sink as a reference. Also, as a practical design for heat sink based on polymer composite, composite and metal sheet hybrid structures are investigated for LED lamp heat sink and audio amplication module housing to find that this hybrid structure can be a good solution considering all of the cooling performance, manufacturing, mechanical performance, cost and weight.
Hybrid $A1_2O_3-TiC$ ceramic particle reinforced 6061 and 5083 Al composite powders were prepared by the combination of twin rolling and stone mill crushing process, followed by consolidating processes of cold compaction, degassing and hot extrusion. The composite bar consists of lamellar structure of ceramic particle rich area and matrix area, in which the hybrid was decomposed into each TiC of about $3-4\mutextrm{m}$ and $AI_2O_3$ particles of about $1-2\mutextrm{m}$ in diameter. It also found that fine $Mg_2Si$ precipitates of about 30 nm were embedded in the matrix, which have grains of about 3 $\mutextrm{m}$. Higher UTS was measured at the 5083 composite bar compared to the conventionally fabricated composite, due to again refinement effect by the rapid solidification. No particle was shown to form in the interface between the matrix and reinforcement, whereas carbon was diffused into the matrix.
Both an unreinforced $Al_2O_3$/Al matrix and a ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ particulate reinforced composite have been produced by the oxidation of an Al surface doped with NaOH in the absence of any other dopant. Fabrication of the matrix was initiated by the formation of $NaAlO_2$, which provides a favorable surface structure for the matrix formation by breaking the protective $Al_2O_3$ layer on Al. During the matrix growth, the external surface of the growth front was covered with a very thin sodium-rich oxide. A cyclic formation process of the sodium-rich oxide on the growth surface was proposed for the sodium-induced directed metal oxidation process. This process involves dissolution of the sodium-rich oxide, motion of Na to the growth front, and re-formation of the oxide on the surface. Near-net-shape composites were fabricated by infiltrating an $Al_2O_3$/Al matrix into a ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ particulate preform, without growth barrier materials. The infiltration distance increased almost linearly in the NaOH-doped preform.
A metal fiber bed has seldom been applied to the practical filtration process despite its excellent mechanical and chemical stability. The filter-bed used in this work was highly porous with open structure, of which apparent porosity was 80 ∼ 90%. Although pressure loss across the filter-bed was very low, separation efficiency was found to be quite high. This paper focuses on the basic filtration mechanisms of a metal filter-bed and a thin ceramic filter from fly ash for reference. The experimental parameters were face velocity, dust loading and porosity of filter-bed. Pressure drop increased with increasing face velocity and dust feeding load for both filters. It also showed that dust particles deposited in the deep flow path, finally resulting in clogging the pore channels. It thereby indicates that the dominating mechanism of the metal filter-bed would be depth filtration. Meanwhile, the thin fly ash composite filters trapped the aerated dust mainly on the surface of the filter medium, so that the instantaneously formed dust layer might cause a steep increase of pressure drop across the filtration system.
A cheallenge in the aerospace field is to design new composites satisfying specific and sometimes conflicting properties. The key steps are ⅰ)the understanding and the control of the reaction between the reinforcement and the embedding matrix, ⅱ) the achievement of a coherent and robust matrix. The problems encountered to prepare particulate, 1D, 2D and 3D reinforced composites using polymeric are discussed. Emphasis is given to the control of the micro/nanostructure using Raman microspectrometry and depth-sensing microindentation, in order to get information on the micromechanics and fiber structure simultaneously, within ceramic (CMC's) and metal matrix (MMC's) composites.
This paper investigates the stability of the functionally graded cylindrical small-scale tube regarding the dynamic analysis and based on the modified nonclassical high-order nonlocal strain gradient theory. The nonlocal beam is modeled according to the high-order tube theory utilizing the energy method based on the Hamilton principle, then the nonlocal governing equations and also nonlocal boundary conditions equations are obtained. The tube structure is made of the new class of composite material composed of ceramic and metal phases as the functionally graded structures. The functionally graded (FG) tube structures rotate around the central axis, and the stability of this nanodevice is due to the centrifugal force which is used for the application of nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) is studied in detail.
The spaced dentition is a common clinical finding. The careful analysis of clinically spaced dentition is a necessity for effective treatment planning. Spaced dentition often exists in the presence of intact teeth. Therefore, special care should be taken in order to obtain the most successful esthetic effect and to prevent overtreatment as well. The aesthetic restorative dental treatment using the porcelain laminate veneers is getting more popular than the complex orthodontic treatment, and prosthetic solutions that require sacrifice of sound tooth structure. The physical strength of porcelain laminate veneers is not as good as porcelain fused metal crowns, and more researches are needed in the field of bonding between composite cement and porcelain laminate veneer. However, the esthetic results from this unprepared porcelain laminate veneers were satisfactory with Authentic (Ceramay, Germany) pressable ceramic technique and resin cement (Rely X Veneer, 3M). This article deals with 2 cases of unprepared porcelain laminate veneers on anterior teeth.
Titanium carbide(TiC) and titanium nitride(TiN) flims were deposited on $Si_3N_4$-TiC composite cutting tools by chemical vapor deposition(CVD) using $TiCl_4-CH_4-H_2$ and $TiCl_4-H_2-N_2$ gas mixtures, respectively. The nonmetal to metal ratio of deposit increases with increasing $m_{C/Ti}$(mole ratio of CH$_4$ to TiCl$_4$ in the input) for TiC coatings and $m_{N/Ti}$(mole ratio of N$_2$ to TiCl$_4$ in the input) for TiN coatings. The nearly stoiahiometric films could be obtained under the deposition condition of $m_{C/Ti}$ between 1.15 and 1.61 for TiC, and that of $m_{N/Ti}$ between 25 and 28 for TiN. Also maximum microhardness of the coatings can be obtained in these ranges. The interfacial region of TiC coatings on $Si_3N_4$-TiC ceramics is wider than that of TiN coatings according to Auger depth profile analysis, which indicates good interfacial bonding for TiC. Experimental results show that TiC coatings have an randomly equiaxed structure and Columnar structure with(220) preferred orientation can be obtained for TiN coatings. And, multilayer coatings have a dense and equiaxed structure.
In the dust separation by using porous filter media, the structure of dust layer deposited on the filter surface of filter medium directly affects the effective filtration. The present study has investigated the specific resistance (K$_2$') of the dust layer and its porosity ($\varepsilon$$_{c}$) for three different filters; FA composite filter, metal fiber filter and stainless filter. The specific resistance (K$_2$') increased and at the same time the cake porosity ($\varepsilon$$_{c}$) decreased with the increase of filtration velocity, possibly due to the compressible effect of dust layer. However, under the low dust concentration, subsequent dust particles would block the open channels through the layer resulting in high specific resistance of the layer. The FA composite filter among three filters was shown to be the most effective filter for dust cake filtration at low filtration velocities less than 0.1 m/s for an approximate dust concentration of 5 g/㎥.
The present paper investigates the simultaneous resonance behavior of spiral stiffened multilayer functionally graded (SSMFG) cylindrical shells with internal and external functionally graded stiffeners under the two-term large amplitude excitations. The structure is embedded within a generalized nonlinear viscoelastic foundation which is composed of a two-parameter Winkler-Pasternak foundation augmented by a Kelvin-Voigt viscoelastic model with a nonlinear cubic stiffness. The cylindrical shell has three layers consist of ceramic, FGM, and metal. The exterior layer of the cylindrical shell is rich ceramic while the interior layer is rich metal and the functionally graded material layer is located between these layers. With regard to classical shells theory, von-Kármán equation, and Hook law, the relations of stress-strain are derived for shell and stiffeners. The spiral stiffeners of the cylindrical shell are modeled according to the smeared stiffener technique. According to the Galerkin method, the discretized motion equation is obtained. The simultaneous resonance is obtained using the multiple scales method. Finally, the influences of different material and geometrical parameters on the system resonances are investigated comprehensively.
